Nintendo Download: Mega Man Battle Network, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, more

After busting up the 3DS eShop during “Mega May,” Capcom’s longtime mascot will take a swipe at the Wii U in August. Every week, a classic Mega Man game will be added to the Wii U eShop. Best of all, they’re kicking things off today, on what is technically the last day of July, with Mega Man Battle Network. Battle Network Mega Man’s first foray into RPGs and it launched an entire series of games as well as multiple spinoffs. Perhaps we’ll see some of them again over the next few weeks.
A different kind of robot warrior stars in this week’s major 3DS release, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids. The latest Lego game from WB Games and TT Games, it’s based on the television show of the same name and transports the Lego Ninjago ninjas into a sci-fi setting.
Other games added to the eShop today include….
- XType Plus (Wii U), a vertically-scrolling shooter.
- Frederic: Resurrection of Music (Wii U), a piano-playing game of “musical duels.”
- IQ Test (Wii U), a puzzling game to challenge your intellect.
- Tangram Attack (Wii U), a Tangram-type puzzler.
- Steel Empire (3DS), a portable remake of the Genesis/GBA shooter.
More information on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

Shovel Knight Review: An Ace (of Spades) Retro-Styled Platformer

Even though we’re in the middle of a second golden age of side-scrolling platformers, very few of them attempt to recreate what was so great about the graphical look of games in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Most of them (Mega Man 9 and 10, Contra ReBirth, Gradius ReBirth) just serve as distant sequels to some NES favorites. So it’s amazing that something like Shovel Knight, a wholly original game from Yacht Club Games, was able to perfectly capture the mood of late 80s game design. It feels more like a lost cartridge rediscovered in the modern day as opposed to a modern game created with modern gamers in mind. Yacht Club’s Sean Velasco told us last year that the company’s goal is to create “really awesome retro/modern fusion games.” I’m glad they got the chance and I’m not sure I’d want it any other way. New Releases: Last of Us Remastered, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, Sacred 3 PC

Take heed fellow video game fans, the month of July is almost over! It’s been a rough few weeks for the retail release report, but 2014’s seventh month looks to go out with a bit of a bang. That’s because Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Remastered, a PS4 re-release of the 2013 blockbuster, will be available in stores this week. If you haven’t experienced the story of Joel, Ellie, and their fight to survive a post-apocalyptic America yet, now’s the time.
Also available this is the PC version of Sacred 3, the latest entry in the action RPG series that began in 2008. Sacred 3 will also be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in early August.
Finally this week, WB Games and TT Games will bring Lego Ninjago: Nindroids to the 3DS and Vita. The game sequel, which is based on the animated series Lego Ninja Rebooted, will add a sci-fi twist to the popular Lego line.
August will be better, I promise.

Sonic Boom Release Dates: 3DS on November 11, Wii U on November 18
Are you ready to lace up Sonic the Hedgehog’s red sneakers one more time?

It’ll be followed a week later by the release of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for the Wii U on November 18. Both games will be a riff on the same plot (an ancient monster named Lyric kidnaps Amy) and will serve as a prequel story to the upcoming Sonic Boom television series on Cartoon Network.
In addition to the release dates, you can head over to the Sega Blog to see the final box shots from both games.

June 2014 NPD: Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 are the top-selling titles once again

Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 once again reign supreme over the monthly sales chart as The NPD Group has confirmed the two titles were #1 and #2, respectively, in their June 2014 top-selling games report. The two games were part of a trend that included other May releases such as Minecraft (#3) and Wolfenstein: The New Order (#7).
The only June releases to crack the top ten were EA Sports UFC (#4) and Tomodachi Life (#9),
With Microsoft’s Kinect-less Xbox One hit store shelves in June, so the battle between the next-generation heated up just as the thermometer did. According to Joystiq, the PS4 once again topped the Xbox One, though all console sales more than doubled (a 106% increase, to be exact) the month of May. Ultimate, the entire industry saw a 24% increase in sales over the last month… and that includes a big jump in Wii U hardware sales too.
You can view the complete top ten chart for the month of June after the break. (more…)
