The Geek Genius Behind Ready Player One: An Interview With Ernest Cline

Here at Warp Zoned, we’re suckers for video game books. But there’s nothing quite like Ernie Cline’s Ready Player One, which I recently reviewed and completely adored. I had a chance to catch up with Cline, whose impressive knowledge of popular culture is astounding. Read on to find out what influenced him, how much research he did for the book (spoiler: a surprisingly small amount), and just how many video games he’s played. (more…)

Today’s Deal of the Day at Amazon in video games is Disney’s Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales for just $13.99 for the Wii. I’m pretty sure this was JUST a deal not too long ago. Nothing exciting, I’m afraid!
Today’s Tee Fury isn’t related to gaming, but it is utterly hilarious: (more…)

Anyway, today’s Deal of the Day at Amazon in video games is, once again, a promotional credit deal with the Xbox 360. It’s for the 4 GB model with the Kinect, and the promotional credit is $50. Not too shabby!
Today’s Tee Fury is absolutely squee-worthy. It’s called “Miyamoto’s Angels,” and I’m sure it’s already sold a boatload: (more…)

Neal Stephenson tackles an MMO “cyber war” in Reamde
Neal Stephenson has become a hero in geek circles for his examinations of cryptography, philosophy, cyberpunk and science fiction in novels such as Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle. Today, Stephenson turns his pen to the world of MMOs with the release of Reamde.
Described by publisher Harper Collins as the tale of an “online war,” Reamde wades into such varied topics as “the global war on terror to social media, computer hackers to mobsters, entrepreneurs to religious fundamentalists.”
Harper Collins has more information at their official website, including a more in-depth look at the novel’s plot:
In 1972, Richard Forthrast, the black sheep of an Iowa farming clan, fled to the mountains of British Columbia to avoid the draft. A skilled hunting guide, he eventually amassed a fortune by smuggling marijuana across the border between Canada and Idaho. As the years passed, Richard went straight and returned to the States after the U.S. government granted amnesty to draft dodgers. He parlayed his wealth into an empire and developed a remote resort in which he lives. He also created T’Rain, a multibillion-dollar, massively multiplayer online role-playing game with millions of fans around the world.
But T’Rain’s success has also made it a target. Hackers have struck gold by unleashing REAMDE, a virus that encrypts all of a player’s electronic files and holds them for ransom. They have also unwittingly triggered a deadly war beyond the boundaries of the game’s virtual universe—and Richard is at ground zero.

It’s a weird and rainy Thursday here in Philadelphia, and I’ve got Lady Gaga in my head. It’s so close to the weekend I can practically taste it!
Anyway, Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games today is Nintendo’s Samurai Warriors 3 for the Wii. It’s marked down to $16.99 from $49.99! That’s a lot of dollar signs. They’ve also got a Gold Box deal coming up: “Engaged in tension-filled battles against a new, ferocious enemy in the most dangerous and suspenseful action ever.” Wow! That couldn’t be more vague.
TeeFury‘s shirt today is based on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, and a portion of today’s sales even go to a charity to fight against lupus: (more…)
