Daily Scoop: July 23, 2013 – Skylanders on sale

Well, the heatwave finally broke – sort of. Now it’s just a mix of heat and rain, like it was weeks before the heatwave. Last night, there was an awesome thunderstorm, but even that didn’t last long enough to cool things down enough. Is it fall yet? Sheesh!

Amazon is running a batch of Video Game Gold Box deals today and the Deal of the Day is for the Skylanders Giants Starter Kit! They’re selling it for $29, which is a whopping 52% off. That’s a pretty good deal! Many of the other Gold Box bargains are also Skylanders related, but Epic Mickey 2 (9 PM Eastern) and Hitman: Absolution (11 PM Eastern) will also go on sale for a limited time today.

Finally, there are lots of great t-shirts available today! (more…)

New Tomb Raider comic and game sequel confirmed

tombraiderrebootartDark Horse Comics hosted an “Art of Video Games” panel yesterday in which they revealed a brand new Tomb Raider comic for 2014. The first issue is currently scheduled to be released on February 26 and it’ll be written by Gail Simone (who has also recently worked on Wonder Woman and Batgirl). In an interview with Kotaku, Simone revealed that the comic will pick up after the end of this year’s Tomb Raider reboot and lead directly into a game sequel:

Kotaku: When does this series take place with respect to the events of the new game? Will this still be a new Lara who’s just starting out as an adventurer?

Simone: Very much so, we start just a few weeks after the end of the game, and this is all in continuity, it will be Tomb Raider canon, and lead DIRECTLY into the sequel. This is what got me excited; we get to be part of Lara Croft history.

Even though the Tomb Raider reboot sold exceptionally well, there were reports that Square Enix was unhappy with the game’s retail performance. I for one am thrilled they’re moving forward with a sequel.

Daily Scoop: July 19, 2013 – Melting

Just when I didn’t think it could get any hotter, it went and did. Supposedly it’s going to rain this weekend, but I’ll believe it when I see it. All I know is I’m going home tonight, cranking up the air conditioning, and playing video games all night. Well, maybe I’ll do some laundry and other responsible stuff, but I wouldn’t hold your breath, guys.

So there are two amazing things happening today – one is that Monaco is on sale for 50% off on Steam (and they’re matching it on their website!). Also in today’s Steam deals are Skyrim ($35.99), Grid 2 ($29.99), and Metro Last Light ($29.99), among others. Check the sale out!

There’s also a new Humble Weekly Bundle out, and this one is a must-have! It’s the discography of Jim Guthrie, and right now it’s under $5. Go treat yourself! You won’t regret it.

And let’s wrap this up with a few t-shirts: (more…)

Daily Scoop: July 18, 2013 – I hate heat indexes

Yeah, so, it’s a million degrees everywhere, and I am really tired of it. That’s the bad news. The good news it that I went to the dentist this morning and I don’t have any cavities! Huzzah! So, all in all, a pretty great day, in spite of the melting part of it.

Anyway, it’s a new day, which means there are new sales going on over at Steam. What did you spend your money on today? Was it Torchlight 2 for $4.99? Garry’s Mod for $2.49? Or maybe that little game you might have heard of, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, for $19.99? Oh, and you can still get XCOM: Enemy Unknown for $9.99.

As always, I’ve got some shirts for you! (more…)

Daily Scoop: July 16, 2013 – OK, Steam, you got me

Wow is it ever hot outside! And it’s just going to keep getting hotter. Thank goodness we have working air conditioners and a huge backlog of games to play. I kind of love summer for that reason… and don’t worry, everyone, I’m getting plenty of vitamin D. I can tell because it’s those moments that I’m in the sun that I can’t play my 3DS because it’s too bright outside.

As far as deals go, well, Steam finally got to me today. I’ll be buying Alan Wake for $2.99, Mark of the Ninja for $3.74, and System Shock 2 for $2.49. Oh, and you should definitely buy Sleeping Dogs for $6.24. That is an absurd steal.

And now, two awesome t-shirts! (more…)

Daily Scoop: July 15, 2013 – Good deals

It’s another lovely week of the summer, and another lovely weekend of gaming comes to a close! I finally beat The Last of Us last night, around 2:30 AM. The time just seemed to melt away – I swear it was 9PM and then suddenly it was almost 3 and I couldn’t sleep because of the scaries. But it was worth it! I couldn’t stop playing it and finished it in four sittings. The intensity was high, the gameplay was fun, and the feels, man – the feels were off the charts.

Anyway, let’s go from feels to deals! Amazon has some new deals this week, including Dead Island Riptide Special Edition for $29.99, Far Cry 3 for $19.99, and Injustice: Gods Among Us for $39.99. Or, if you want to be seriously hardcore, you can save $20 on the Injustice Collector’s Edition. Good stuff!

There are some good t-shirts up today that you might enjoy! (more…)

“The Legend of Zelda” (sort of) stumps 2 of 3 contestants in Final Jeopardy!

jeopardy-zelda

Alex Trebek has asked many questions inspired by video games over the years on Jeopardy! But yesterday’s episode likely marked the first time that Final Jeopardy! would test a contestant’s knowledge of joysticks, pixels, and 1-Ups.

The category was “Video Game History” and the clue read, “The title princess of this game, which launched a best-selling franchise, was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife.” Have you figured it out? I hope so. The answer is “(What is) The Legend of Zelda.” All three players knew the answer (though Trebek kept asking the three contestants if they knew the name of the franchise), but only one got credit for it.

Champion Mark Japinga was able to come up with the game’s full title, but challengers Ken Dasher and Toby Crew both answered “Zelda.” If this were the Jeopardy! or Double Jeopardy! round, the host likely would have asked them for clarification, but because it was Final Jeopardy!, the wrath of Trebek was delivered (“Gotta pay attention,” he told both losing contestants).

I think we all know how Sean Connery would have responded to that.
