Daily Scoop: August 28, 2012 – Gold Box Event!

Whoops! I’m a little late to the Gold Box party happening over at Amazon. The Deal of the Day is Grand Theft Auto IV and Max Payne 3 in a PC download bundle for $24.99. If only I had a better computer, I’d buy that in a heartbeat!

The rest of the Gold Box deals to come are:

  • Right now: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Pro Gamepad Controller for $19.99
  • 12 PM PST/3 PM EST: The ultimate Dark Knight experience! – I’m guessing Batman: Arkham City
  • 2 PM PST/5 PM EST: Get your PS3 moving with this deal! – Something with the PlayStation Move controller
  • 4PM PST/7PM EST: Become a part of the Game of Thrones saga! – Could it be Game of Thrones
  • 6PM PST/9PM EST: Business is war. – I’m going to guess Spec Ops: The Line
  • 8 PM PST/11PM EST: Get back on the court as some of the greatest NBA players of all time! – NBA 2K12

Whew! That’s a lot of excitement.

Sadly, no t-shirts today. I guess you’ll just have to spend money tomorrow!

Nintendo Power Memories

Last week we heard some disheartening news: Nintendo Power will close its doors after a whopping twenty-five years on newsstands. Many gamers grew up reading the monthly publication, and have fond memories of the days they would open up their mailbox and find the latest issue of Nintendo Power just waiting to be read. As a child of the 80s, I am among those who were fortunate enough to be part of this era, and, like many of you, am saddened to hear that it is coming to an end. So, as a tribute – or eulogy of sorts – to Nintendo’s long-running publication, I would like to share some memories of my life as a Nintendo Power reader. (more…)

It’s going to be one of those vacations, I can tell already…

Let’s see, deals! Well, there’s a huge range of games in the Toys R Us clearance, everything from Skyward Sword with music CD to… well… a whole bunch of random stuff. Go check it out!

Uncharted movie director out, National Treasure writers in

Sony Pictures has made two announcements regarding their long-gestating adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, both of which seem to indicate it will be in development for a bit longer.

The first is that Neil Burger, who had replaced David O’Russell as the film’s director last summer, has now exited the project. No explanation was given for this, but seeing that two new writers have been brought in, one imagines that those involved were not happy with the current direction.

Those two new writers are the husband and wife duo Cormac and Marianne Wibberly, best known for penning the Nicolas Cage-led National Treasure franchise. Given the similar subject matter, one can almost see the complex inner workings of the producer’s thought processes.

Losing Burger is unfortunate, as his most recent film, Limitless, showed a creative visual flair that has been developing during his career. Sony Pictures, along with Atlas Entertainment and Arad Productions, are now going to wait to until the Wibberlys deliver a new draft before shopping it around to potential new directors.

Sony Pictures registers 14 domains relating to a “Console War Movie”

How exactly do you make a movie out of the console war? I have no idea, but Sony Pictures Entertainment is going to try.

The film giant (which shouldn’t be confused with Sony’s video game arm, Sony Computer Entertainment) has registered 14 domain names to promote a “Console War” movie. The domains include:

  • console-war.net
  • console-warmovie.com
  • console-wars.net
  • console-warsmovie.com
  • consolewar-movie.com
  • consolewar-movie.net
  • consolewar.net
  • consolewarmovie.com
  • consolewars-movie.com
  • consolewars-movie.net
  • consolewarsmovie.com
  • theconsolewar-movie.com
  • theconsolewar-movie.net
  • theconsolewar.net
  • theconsolewarmovie.com
  • theconsolewars-movie.com
  • theconsolewars-movie.net
  • theconsolewarsmovie.com

Currently, none of the domains resolve to a workable website and, presumably, any personnel decisions relating to the film have yet to be made. But as outlandish as this sounds, there could be a good film here. The Social Network, which was long thought of as “that Facebook movie,” was nominated for multiple Oscars and telemovie Pirates of Silicon Valley nicely chronicled the rivalry between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as it stood back in 1999.

Daily Scoop: August 23, 2012 – A lovely day for gaming

It’s a gorgeous day today, and would be spent perfectly indoors playing video games with the windows open, perhaps with a frosty beverage at hand and a fuzzy, sleepy kitty on your lap. Alas, it is also a Thursday, which means work is where most of us are. Sigh…

Not much in the way of deals today, other than video game stuff for under $10 at Amazon. Check that list out! It goes on for pages and pages!

One totally awesome shirt up today… (more…)

Nintendo Power will shut down this December

Living in an age of instantaneous and free information has brought with it an unparalleled level of enlightenment across the globe, but it does have a downside… and its victims… namely, the hard copy press. Yesterday, Nintendo announced that their long-running official magazine, Nintendo Power, would be hanging up its joypad with its December 2012 issue.

The house of Mario released the following statement concerning the magazine, which was originally published in-house by Nintendo before they gave the rights to Future Publishing’s US arm in 2007:

Nintendo can confirm that Future US will end the production of Nintendo Power magazine with the last issue slated for December 2012. For Nintendo Power subscription inquiries, please visit nintendopower.com/customerservice.

The demise of Nintendo Power comes only after a year after another high profile gaming magazine, GamePro, was forced to close after its new quarterly format was poorly received. And as we languish in our nostalgia of excitedly reading gaming magazines and adorning our walls with their posters, we wish the employees of Nintendo Power the best with whatever the future holds for them.

Daily Scoop: August 22, 2012 – Encounters!

A new Dungeons and Dragons Encounter season begins tonight! We go deep into the Underdark to Menzoberranzan, where drow wait with their mystery and intrigue. Intrigue us, foul creatures! We demand it. I’ll be one of the Dungeon Masters this season, which is exciting and terrifying at the same time. The last time I tried to DM was when I was a teenager playing second edition. I didn’t want to have to do the math for the weight of carrying rations, so I made the priest in the group pray for a Sizzler to appear whenever they got hungry.

True story.

Anyway, nothing really in the way of deals today. I mean, you can troll Amazon for bonus offers and discounts and stuff like I do every day, or you can spend your life donating to awesome Kickstarters instead. You have the power.

Just one little t-shirt for you today, folks! (more…)
