Shadow of the Colossus film gets Chronicle director

In April 2009 it was announced that Sony Pictures and Sony Computer Entertainment would be collaborating to make a movie adaptation of Team Ico’s classic game, Shadow of the Colossus. As expected, the news was met with a muted, lukewarm response from fans, disappointed with a plethora of past video game film failures. It was not helped by the fact that the “talent” included writer Justin Marks, who penned the misunderstood study of femininity that was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Now this week, three years later, news broke that Josh Trank, director of the found-footage superhero flick Chronicle had been tasked with directing the film. He was not just handed the job, but actively fought for the role, citing his love of the game.

This motivation seems ill-placed though, as anyone who has ever played the game will know that it offers few characters and little to no dialogue, yet remains an amazing game through its highly original and stylised world, as well as an emotional investment in both Wander and his loyal horse Agro as they journey on their quest to slay sixteen colossi.

The only good news is that Trank’s involvement is a good sign, and seems to indicate that any script written by Marks will now be binned with Trank and a new writer starting from scratch. From a screenwriting prospective the game offers little dramatic structure that could be transferred to a film, compared to a game like Uncharted for example, which offers a very cinematic narrative within the actual game. How the as yet unannounced writer will tackle these issues remains to be seen.

While general opinion around the Internet regarding the new announcement has been as lukewarm as that made three years ago, some, including myself, remain optimistic that Sony will give Trank some creative freedom needed to translate the magic of the game to the cinema screen and craft an emotional journey to match that of the game.

Daily Scoop: May 17, 2012 – Too much gaming

It’s finally happened: my wrist is shot. It’s probably mostly because I smashed it against the sharp corner of my drawer the other day, but I’m sure all the writing and gaming I’ve been doing doesn’t really help my case much. Looks like I need to ice it and take it easy for a while. Luckily it’s not my mouse hand, and I can probably figure out a way to hit the number buttons and Q with my nose, so I’ll be playing Diablo III later. Take that, wrist!

Amazon’s having a deal on Serious Sam games right now. You can get individual titles or four-packs, all of which are very cheap at 75% off. Fans of the series should hop on this before the 19th!

Awesome video game mashup shirt available today: (more…)

Daily Scoop: May 16, 2012 – In the wake of Battle.net outages

Many people have been complaining about glitches, bugs, and maintenance on the Battle.net server. Blizzard is probably – maybe? – regretting the concept of forcing even single-player gameplay to be online. We’re crashing everything! I got in a few hours of play last night, so I’m selfishly happy. How about you?

Gamefly is having a big under $15 sale on some of their used games! Get Rage, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, or Homefront for just $9.99, or F.3.A.R. or Brink for $12.99. Not sure how Brink is more expensive than Deus Ex… There’s not much else up, other than Amazon’s buy Sorcery, get a PlayStation Move Navigation Controller for $14.99. This is a pretty good deal if you need a nav and want Sorcery!

Just one shirt today, but it’s a cute one! (more…)

Community channels Mario, Earthbound for third season finale

Community is a show I don’t watch regularly, but I really should… especially after seeing the two awesome images above!

Those are screenshots from a video game the Greendale College study group will be zapped into for the first part of the third season finale, “Digital Estate Planning.” Pierce (Chevy Chase) may lose his inheritance unless he does battle with his father’s former assistant (Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito). But the battlefield turns out to be a 16-bit video game. Kinda sounds a bit like Ready Player One doesn’t it?

The screenshot on the left is clearly an homage to the Super Mario Bros. franchise. That waterfall (and the jumping fish above it) are ripped right out of Super Mario Bros. 2 and the hilly platforms are very Mario-esque.

And the image on the right looks exactly like a screenshot from Earthbound. All of the Community characters even bear more than a passing resemblance to Ness and company.

Head on over to The AV Club to get a full-sized look at the images.
