The Art of Video Games: From Pac-Man To Mass Effect Review: Is There Art In Video Games?

The Art of Video Games: From Pac-Man To Mass Effect is the literature companion piece to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s 2012 exhibition, which attempts to illustrate the evolution of video games, and by design, the art within. The book dazzles us with screenshots from forty years of gaming history, at one point placing Mass Effect 2 inside a blocky alien shape from Space Invaders, perhaps to suggest how far we have come. Yet I found I could not provide a genuine review without asking the question – are video games art? (more…)

David Kushner has already hit it out of the park once when it comes to a video game history lesson with Masters of Doom, his portrait of the early days of id Software. His latest book, Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto, is another behind-the-scenes look at the genesis of a controversial franchise and the people behind it: Rockstar Games and its founders, Sam and Dan Houser. Daily Scoop: April 24, 2012 – Back to work!

Well, I’ve been off for four straight days, and it’s been glorious. But today, I head back to work. Sad faces! I spent the weekend playing a lot of Dungeons and Dragons (my first ever Battle Interactive!), watching loads of “True Blood” (this show is darn good), reading some more Dresden Files (I’m on book seven), and lots and lots and lots of writing. Whew! Busy-ness.

Let’s see, what’s up for today? Amazon’s having a Gold Box dedicated to video games! The big deal is Mass Effect 3, which is just $29.99 today on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

The rest of the Gold Box deals are:

  • 6:00 AM PST/9:00 AM EST: “This wireless gaming headset is powered by state-of-the-art 2.4/5Ghz Dual Band WiFi radio technology that virtually eliminates wireless interference” – this is Turtle Beach Ear Force X32 Digital Headset for $64.99!
  • 8:00 AM PST/11:00 AM EST: “PlayStation Eye” – Um, I guess this is the PlayStation Eye? :P – Yep! $20 today!
  • 9:00 AM PST/12:00 PM EST: “Get your PlayStation 3 system moving!”
  • 10:00 AM PST/1:00 PM EST: “PlayStation Move Navigation Controller” – OK, they’re not even trying now…
  • 11:00 AM PST/2:00 PM EST: “This attachment is perfect for arcade style shooting games.” – Could this be the Sharpshooter?
  • 12:00 PM PST/3:00 PM EST: “SNK’s flagship fighting game for the PS3!” Could this be King of Fighters XIII?
  • 2:00 PM PST/5:00 PM EST: “Catch “Lightning” with this deal” – My guess is Final Fantasy XIII-2!
  • 5:00 PM PST/8:00 PM EST: “Created to appeal to the serious fighting game enthusiast, a FightStick that is made to bring the arcade experience closer to home”
  • 8:00 PM PST/11:00 PM EST: “Set sail for a LEGO adventure on your Nintendo DS.” – Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, anyone?

Seems like mostly deals for PlayStation 3 owners, but perhaps a few cross-platform deals as well. Keep your eyes peeled for more information!

Just one gaming-related shirt today, and it’s a funny mashup! (more…)

Silent Hill: Revelation will open in theaters on October 26

It looks the rivalry between Silent Hill and Resident Evil will heat up again this Fall… but this time the fight is on the silver screen. Open Road Films has announced that they’ve acquired Silent Hill: Revelation and that the film will be released in theaters on October 26, five weeks after Resident Evil: Retribution‘s September 14 opening.

Silent Hill: Revelation will follow the plot of the third game in the series, including Heather Mason’s (Adelaide Clemons) discovery that she’s not who she thinks she is and her search for her missing father (Sean Bean). The film also stars Kit Harington, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Malcolm McDowell alongside returning actors Deborah Kara Unger and Radha Mitchell.

Producer Samuel Hadida is very excited about Silent Hill: Revelation, saying, “The film is a thrill ride that improves on the original in many ways. We take all audiences, new and old, deep into the world of psychological horror that is Silent Hill, and advance the story for those familiar with the franchise.”

Daily Scoop: April 18, 2012 – Downloadable Deals

I promised myself I wouldn’t talk about a certain card game (no, they aren’t paying me royalties every time I mention them), but considering last night was the fourth time I’ve played it in five days, I have to at least share one thing, and that is the exquisite haiku my boyfriend played for me last night:

Kanye West
Eating the last known bison
Fancy Feast.

It’s got a nice ring to it, wouldn’t you say?

So what’s up with deals today? Well, Amazon’s got some downloadable deals going on right now. Battlefield 3 is $29.99, Battlefield Bad Company 2 is $4.99, Battlefield 2 Complete Collection is $4.99, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam is $4.99. They’ve also got a bunch of Battlefield Heroes National Army Starter Packs, ranging from $6.69 to $13.39. All of these deals can be found here.

Just one shirt today, but it’s a good one… (more…)
