Former Ubisoft devs tackle survival horror with Outlast
The first game from Montreal-based Red Barrels is set to be the single-player survival horror game, Outlast. Founded by ex-Ubisofters David Chateauneuf, Philippe Morin and Hugo Dallaire, Outlast features a plot that echoes the early Resident Evil games…
Journalist Miles Upshur breaks into a research facility of the Murkoff Corporation, which formally housed people suffering from mental illnesses. Once inside, he must seek out the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive in order to escape the horror within.
With some Assassin’s Creed alumni developing Outlast, it is no surprise to find the game tackles themes of religion and science, but with more of a horror vibe that calls to mind the trailer for Ubisoft’s own Wii U exclusive, ZombiU.
Outlast is currently scheduled for digital download on PC in 2013, but given the talent and skill involved, it would be great if this crossed over onto consoles.
Prey 2 is officially still in limbo
Back in April, Bethesda officially declared that development on Prey 2 had stalled. A company spokesman would confirm that the game wasn’t being cancelled, but that it would definitely not make its planned 2012 release date. In the six months since that news was handed down… not much has changed.
Nathan Cheever, a designer at Human Head Studios took to Twitter this week to confirm that the game is still in limbo:
Prey 1 = Indians in Space.Prey 2 = Cowboys in Space. (#Prey2).btw, P2 hasn’t been officially canceled, only in limbo.
— Nathan Cheever (@NathanCheever) October 15, 2012
As we said at the time, the original Prey took 11 years to go from announcement to release. So this delay is, sadly, par for the course for the series.
The Scientifically Proven Top 100 Video Games of All Time

We greatly expanded and updated The Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time as The Video Game Canon in 2017. You should check it out!
When it comes to deciding which video games qualify as the best of all time, everyone has an opinion. And sometimes those opinions result in a violent argument over the mental faculties (or lack thereof) of the listmaker. So we thought we’d add a little science to the equation to find out exactly which games can be considered the “100 Best Video Games of All Time” and which ones have been fighting above their weight class all these years. Call of Duty: Black Ops II launch trailer released a month early
Call of Duty: Black Ops II has an awesome launch trailer, and even though the game’s launch is still a month away, we can check it out now. I’m not big on the Call of Duty series, but I was hopelessly addicted to the first Black Ops, and with the pre-order bonus of the Nuketown 2525 map, I’m worried I’m going to cave and get it. Well… maybe I’ll just watch the trailer again.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on November 13, 2012 with a Wii U version arriving a few days later.
Tik Games needs Kickstarter campaign to finish Chucky: Wanna Play?
Tik Games first announced Chucky: Wanna Play? last May with an expected release date of Fall 2011 on the PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. But the Fall came and went and gamers certainly didn’t get lucky with a brand new Chucky game. Now we know why.
The developer has turned to Kickstarter to help fund the rest of the development of Chucky: Wanna Play?, which has now become a PC exclusive. Tik Games is seeking $925,000 to complete the game for an expected release date of May 2013.
“After securing the video game publishing rights for this menacing little character, we decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the development. This allows us to build the game for gamers and not worry about watering down our vision to appease mass market game resellers,” said Alex Tikhman, Co-Founder and VP of Publishing & Business Development for Tik Games. “If our campaign is successful, we will create a game that truly captures the edge-of-your-seat thriller action of the menacing spirit Chucky.”
The Chucky: Wanna Play? Kickstarter campaign will run through November 14, and if you’re willing to open your wallet extra wide, Tik will even let you contribute to the game’s development.
Project Eternity Kickstarter drive ends with record-breaking pledge total
Project Eternity, the Kickstarter for a new RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, still has a few hours left, but it’s already broken records with a total (as of this writing) of $3,753,196 [Update: The final tally was $3,986,929]. It has already beaten out the previous record holder, Double Fine Entertainment’s Double Fine Adventure, which ended at $3,335,265.
Obsidian is responsible for many groundbreaking games, including the Baldur’s Gate series, the Icewind Dale series, Planescape: Torment, Fallout, and Fallout 2. Project Eternity is a fantasy-based isometric RPG that will be available for Linux, Mac, and PC. You still have some time to get in on the Kickstarter, which will, at the very least, net you a copy of the game at a much lower price than what retail will be when the game releases in April 2014.
Just $25 will get you a “Digital Downloadable Copy of Project Eternity. This price is only available for those who help fund before the game is released! All Kickstarter backers will receive a special Kickstarter only in-game achievement and item. (The item will not affect the game’s balance). Includes Cooking with Tim – An RPG-themed e-Cookbook, and Making of Project Eternity Documentary (streaming).”

First screenshots from standalone version of DayZ released
The DayZ creators have been hard at work building their standalone game, and have just released the first screenshots from it. The shots are from in-progress work, “with only basic texture work and initial lighting passes.”
These buildings were made in the original ArmA 2 game with no thought about interiors, and the DayZ creators are going in and giving each building guts, to give the players more opportunities for scavenging for much-needed items. As it says on their development blog,
“The village I used to take the screenshot in now has all its buildings enterable, including the sheds. Most focus has so far been on the buildings that are situated outside of the center, but focus now is turning to doing interiors for the city buildings. This is complicated by our desire to dramatically increase performance, and given the scene complexity inside cities we need to balance this with the desire to increase building scavenging opportunities inside the cities.”
Check out the full post, as well as more screenshots, at the DayZ blog.
Daily Scoop: October 16, 2012 – Plans within plans
Nothing like having a full agenda and getting nothing done! I swear that’s been my life lately. Try to get one thing together and a million other things seem to fall in the way. Oh, and also, today is kind of a natural bummer of a day – it’s the day BioShock Infinite was supposed to come out. Boo!
Anyway, what’s going on for today? John Scalzo, our Editor-in-Chief, let me know that Gamefly is having a nice sale – it’s an under $15 sale on used games. You can get Mass Effect 3 or Syndicate for $9.99, or Binary Domain or Batman: Arkham City for $14.99. Or you could just spend your money on the Borderlands 2 DLC that came out today, or saving it up for the new Sleeping Dogs DLC that was just announced. Scoop those up, people! For sure.
Some great t-shirts are up for sale today! (more…)
