CBS Interactive partners with TwitchTV and MLG to join the growing eSports community

CBS Interactive has announced exclusive partnerships with video game broadcasting network TwitchTV and eSports league Major League Gaming (MLG) to add coverage of competitive gaming to their portfolio of consumer media.
Jim Lanzone, President of CBS Interactive, thinks eSports, or competitive gaming, is one of “hottest trends in video”. In recent years, mainstream news sites are starting to regularly provide coverage of competitive gaming events in the US and Europe.
TwitchTV attracts 12 million unique viewers a month, and will receive exclusive advertising support from CBS Interactive with this deal. In the same monthly period, MLG broadcasts 750,000 game matches, and streams them to hundreds of thousands of people in more than 170 countries. These numbers will only grow thanks to the deal’s promised support from CBS Interactive’s other Internet destinations including CNET, GameSpot, and TV.com.
CBS Interactive hopes this partnership will allow them to provide coverage of eSports to an “engaged” audience, and grant them better access to the 18-25 male demographic.
Quantum Conundrum Hands-On Preview: Lasers Make Everything Better

“It’s like Portal.”
Ever since it was announced at PAX Prime 2011, that’s been the best and most succinct way to describe Square Enix’s Quantum Conundrum. This comparison shouldn’t come as a surprise since Portal creator Kim Swift is also the lead designer on Quantum Conundrum at developer Airtight Games. The similarities end there, however, because there really is a quirky uncle to save at the end of this game. (more…)

Police Warfare: A Kickstarter project that looks arresting
Elastic Games, a newly launched company comprised of veteran developers from Ubisoft, Epic, and Rockstar has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their ambitious multiplayer shooter Police Warfare. Yes, it’s another Kickstarter campaign, but Police Warfare sounds super awesome, promising to combine the expansive scope of Battlefield 3 with the “cops and robbers” feel of Heat. That is, if Elastic can reach their funding goal of $325,000 (as of this writing, they’re at $15,000).
Players will experience the gorgeous visuals, punchy sound design, and fluid controls they expect in a AAA FPS. All this while a clash of titans takes place in sunny Los Angeles between America’s oldest and most distinguished SWAT division, and a group of former private military contractors armed to the teeth in the latest weapons, vehicles and gadgets. This isn’t just a bank heist… this is war.
Even in this very early state, Police Warfare looks amazing with multiple character classes (Assault, Sniper, Support), vehicles and a ton weapons (including a taser mine). If Elastic exceeds their funding goal, they plan to add more maps, more weapons, and more platforms (including the PS3 and Xbox 360).
New Releases: The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition, Disgaea 3 Vita, More
Welcome to another relatively dry week of new releases in the relatively dry month of April.
The biggest new release of the week is the Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings for the PC and, for the first time, on the Xbox 360.
Also new this week is Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat, a compilation that brings together the downloadable games Deadliest Warrior and Deadliest Warrior: Legends in one retail package. It’ll be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Finally this week is Atlus’ Vita RPG Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention. It’s a shrunk-down version of the PS3 game with nearly the same name, so if you love strategy RPGs, it might be one to look into.
Wait! There’s one more. Budget publisher Viva Media will bring Dark Strokes: Sins of the Fathers to the PC this week.
OK, that’s all of your new releases for the week.

Aliens: Colonial Marines Hands-On Preview: The Xenomorphs Say “Game Over, Man!”

One of the longest lines at PAX East was the one for the Aliens: Colonial Marines booth, which had one of the best experiences on the show floor. No, they weren’t offering free mohawks, but they were hosting a developer-led demonstration of the single-player campaign, followed by a hands-on preview of the multiplayer… against those same developers. Sadly, we didn’t get to play as the xenomorphs, but that didn’t detract from the experience at all. And it’s scarier being hunted down by killer aliens when you know they’re far smarter than AI could ever be. (more…)

Mass Effect 3 tops NPD bestseller report for March 2012

Whether you loved Mass Effect 3‘s ending or you hated it, one thing’s for certain, BioWare made a ton of money selling you the game. In what should be a surprise to no one, Mass Effect 3 took the top spot in The NPD Group’s report of the bestselling games in March 2012.
Even though March was a bit of a slow month for new releases, the remainder of the top ten is populated almost totally by games released in the last four weeks including Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (#2), MLB 12: The Show (#3), SSX (#5), Street Fighter X Tekken (#6), Mario Party 9 (#7), Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations (#9), and Major League Baseball 2K12 (#10).
Whew!
Hit the break to see the full top ten, including the pair of holdovers from the February 2012 report. (more…)

April’s Modern Warfare 3 maps now available on CoD Elite

In case you’re still in a PAX East-induced coma, you might like to know that Activision and developer Infinity Ward have deployed the Call of Duty Elite content drops for April. Available only for CoD Elite Premium subscribers on the Xbox 360, two new multiplayer maps await those who download the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 content:
“Sanctuary”
Suspended in the air one thousand feet up, you’ll battle more than altitude in the towering sandstone monasteries of Central Greece. Formed over millions of years, this sanctuary’s natural rock pillars have repelled invading armies and withstood the ravages of time but now they’ll face your deployment. Test your skills—and the ancient monks’ craftsmanship—with your arsenal of SMG’s, assault rifles and shotguns. Just remember: don’t look down.
“Foundation”
Journey into the heart of South Korea for a decommissioned concrete factory where the cement flows and bullets fly. After decades of constructing roads and buildings, the towering facility is now a perfectly-constructed combat zone for sniping and run-and-gun rules of engagement. Don’t stand in awe of the towering concrete crusher at the center of the factory unless you want to see your kill ratio meet the same fate.
Both maps will be available to non-Elite subscribers on the Xbox 360, as well as PC and PS3 players, soon.

Borderlands 2 Hands-On Preview: A Brief Visit Back to Pandora

The one thing I was looking forward to the most at PAX East was getting my hands on Borderlands 2… and I was not in the least bit disappointed by anything other than the amount of playtime I got. I could have stayed there for hours if they had let me. As it was, we had barely enough time to assign our skill points in our tree and get acclimated to the guns, before we ran around as much as we possibly could, wreaking havoc in a shiny new Pandora. Read on to find out what’s new in the Siren class, how the new guns feel, and why I can’t wait for September 18. (more…)
