Daily Scoop: February 6, 2012 – Deals, deals, deals

Wow! This weekend was full of lots of fun gaming – of every kind. I played some Silent Hill and Chrono Trigger, some 4e Dungeons & Dragons, and topped it all off with some Pandemic. A little something for every kind of gamer in me…

Amazon’s got about a billion deals going on today. First, their Deal of the Day is a lightning deal, and it says: “The limited edition bundle of this popular strategy RPG is a true collector’s item for the Sony PS3!” I’m hoping it’s a deal on the Final Fantasy XIII-2, but I’m not going to hold my breath. It’ll go off at 5 PM EST.

Amazon’s also got Aksys’ Fate/Extra LE for $29.99 on the PSP, as well as the following PC downloads by Kalypso Media:

  • Dungeons for $7.49
  • Dungeons: Map Pack – DLC for $0.75
  • Dungeons – Into the Dark – DLC Pack 1 for $0.99
  • Dungeons: The Dark Lord for $7.49
  • Tropico Trilogy for $7.99
  • Airline Tycoon 2 for $11.99
  • Disciples III – Resurrection for $7.49

On top of that, they’ve also got all new weekly deals going on as well. They’ve got special deals on Cabela’s games; a buy one, get one deal on select Sims 3 games; and 25% off Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. They’re also offering a deal on select Disney games – if you buy buy Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, you get 50% off a Disney game on that list. And don’t forget there’s still a deal going for $50 off the Xbox 360 250GB Holiday Value Bundle with Kinect, and if you’re still behind on your Call of Duty games, you can get the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops for $14.99 used in the warehouse.

No video game shirts today, but it’s ladies-only week on TeeFury (they’re calling it “She-Fury!”) and today’s shirt is pretty awesome: (more…)

New Releases: Resident Evil Revelations, Kingdoms of Amalur, The Darkness II, More

Some ambitious games that have been a long time coming will be available in stores this week.

Chief among them is Resident Evil Revelations, Capcom’s second zombie-killing game for the 3DS, but the first to tell a new tale in the franchise’s lengthy saga.

Also available is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the first game from Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios. The game has been in development practically since Mr. Bloody Sock retired back in 2007. It’ll be interesting to see what his dream team of developers came up with when it releases for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 this week.

2K’s The Darkness II (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) is neither the start of a new franchise nor is it the latest entry in a long-runner. But fans have been clamoring for a sequel to the 2007 shooter and now they’ll finally get it.

If you prefer your “new” games in collected form, two new ones round this week’s major releases: the PS3-exclusive Jak and Daxter Collection (which brings together the first three games in the series) and the Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition (which collects the main game and all of the DLC in a PC, PS3, or Xbox 360 package).

You can check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

PS3 Elite users get first Modern Warfare 3 maps on February 28

Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s Community Manager, has tweeted some good news for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players on the PS3 who are also CoD Elite subscribers. It seems that this group of players will receive access to the Liberation and Piazza maps on February 28.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players who aren’t Elite subscribers will have to wait until March to purchase the DLC, when it’s all bundled together in the first “Modern Warfare 3 Content Collection.” So expect a lot more of these CoD DLC news bites in the future.

Syndicate Hands-On Preview: From Bullfrog To BS

There is a certain level of irony in the amount of hype, press and videos EA has been spewing out about their new iteration of Bullfrog’s 1993 classic Syndicate, in that it is very similar to some of the ‘hype’ lauded by gaming guru and Bullfrog co-founder Peter Molyneux in his heyday. And by ‘hype’ I mean bullshit. Not to discredit the man who also brought us Theme Park, Theme Hospital, and Populus, but he does have a habit of overegging what was included in his games, like the confession that the now-cancelled Project Milo demo video at 2009’s E3 was tightly scripted.

But he doesn’t even work at EA anymore, who bought Bullfog in the late 1990s and integrated the company into its massive domain (again, the irony that this game is about massive rival companies running the world is not lost). Most of the other Bullfrog developers went on to found the now defunct Mucky Foot. And yet EA did not think to call them when reviving one of their old games.

They might wish they had. (more…)

Curt Schilling talks Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

There are a lot of big names behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. Executive Designer Ken Rolston, is a veteran developer who has worked on The Elder Scrolls series. Fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore created Amalur’s world and the lore within it. And Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn and those strangely sexual action figures based on The Wizard of Oz, assisted with the art direction. But the biggest name connected to Kingdoms of Amalur is one that doesn’t get mentioned very often: Curt Schilling, the founder of 38 Studios and former Major League Baseball player.

Schilling’s bloody sock may be immortalized in Cooperstown, but aside from being a staunch World of Warcraft advocate, he’s still toiling away in the Minors when it comes to game development. We’ll find out if he gets the call up to the big show next week when Reckoning ships to stores, but like any leader in the locker room, Schilling has plenty to say about the journey that brought him (and the rest of the team at 38 Studios) to this point… (more…)

Gotham City Impostors prepares for a February 7-8 release

Batman has taken a holiday and it’s up to the regular citizens of Gotham to protect the city from a gang of The Joker’s minions. Thus is born Gotham City Impostors, a Team Fortress 2-like shooter available for download through PC download services and the PSN on February 7 and through the XBLA on February 8 for $14.99.

Why has Bats gone away? Beats me, but I do know that I’m ready to put the hurtin’ on some Jokerz.
