New Releases: NHL 12, God of War: Origins, White Knight Chronicles II, More

Welcome to another week of new games! This week EA Sports is lacing up their hockey skates, Kratos is coming at you in 3D and D3 Publisher has bundled together two RPGs for twice the fun. Also, the Bit.Trip series is getting collected in two separate compilations and the insane geniuses at Twisted Pixel are putting out a game starring an undead marionette bent on revenge.

  • The ice skates belong to this year’s only hockey sim, NHL 12 (PS3, Xbox 360).
  • Kratos will go 3D thanks to the stereoscopic 3D mode found in God of War: Origins Collection, a PS3 remake of his two PSP adventures.
  • D3’s double RPG is White Knight Chronicles II, which also includes a free copy of the first White Knight Chronicles game.
  • The Bit.Trip series will be coming to the 3DS as Bit.Trip Saga and the Wii as Bit.Trip Complete.
  • Finally, Twisted Pixel’s The Gunstringer proves once again that the developers are a happily demented bunch.

Check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

Check out the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S in Need For Speed: The Run

If you’re hard up for some Porsche action, the Limited Edition versions of Need For Speed: The Run will give you access to the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S. The game will feature an “illicit, coast-to-coast race from San Francisco to New York”, according to its website. With 500 horsepower and 800 lbs of torque, not to mention those sexy contours, you’ll be tearing up the country’s virtual asphalt in style. It’s probably the next best thing to owning the actual car. And at $49.99 for PC and $59.99 for PS3 and Xbox 360, a copy of Need for Speed: The Run is slightly more affordable.

The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S will be exclusive to the Need For Speed: The Run “Limited Edition,” which is actually the only version of the game available on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, so pre-order now (or not) and live out your Porsche dreams on November 15, 2011.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution grafts onto #1 spot in August NPDs

I know what you’re thinking… what about Madden? Well, for some strange reason, The NPD Group’s tracking team considers August 30 a part of the September report. Perhaps they’ve taken a few too many hits to the head (BOOM!). But whatever the reason, So Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the bestselling game in August.

Deus Ex may have won, but the industry as a whole lost. A 23 percent drop from August 2011 meant that sales were way down across the board. The lack of a new Madden game in August actually explains that drop pretty well though. Only Nintendo’s repriced 3DS system, which sold 185,000 consoles from August 12 to the end of the period, could be considered a success. Sony’s price cut for the PS3 also increased sales of the HD console.

You can check out the complete top ten for August 2011 right here:

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
2. NCAA Football 12 (Xbox 360, PS3)
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, DS, Wii, PC)
4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (DS, Wii, PS3)
5. Cars 2 (DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
6. Just Dance: Summer Party (Wii)
7. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)
10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution “Missing Link” expansion coming in October

Square Enix has announced the first expansion to Deus Ex: Human Revolution, “The Missing Link,” will be available in October. Well, it’s more of a sidestory than an expansion as “Missing Link” takes place during the events of Human Revolution:

After being tortured by Belltower agents and having his augmentations disabled, Adam Jensen must rely solely on his basic capabilities to escape from a freighter, destined for an unknown location. While fighting for his survival on the ship, he uncovers another layer to the conspiracy that he never would have suspected. As Adam, befriend new, mysterious allies and fight ruthless enemies to discover what was happening in the shadows during the events of Deus Ex: Human Revolution!

Square Enix promises that players will be able to experience “new layers of conspiracy, sprawling new environments and brand-new characters” as they rebuild Adam’s augmentation set.

For a taste of “The Missing Link,” check out the teaser trailer above.

Max Payne 3 slow-mo dives towards a March 2012 release

After several delays, Rockstar Games has finally announced a date for the return of everyone’s favorite bullet-time dodging, inner monologue-abusing hero. Max Payne 3 is officially due out in March 2012 in North America and Europe for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. How serious are they this time? Check out the game’s boxart on your left.

The game is set after the events of Max Payne 2, following Max as he tries to start a new life in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The story will follow Payne as he provides private security for a wealthy industrialist in this new locale. Eventually, he faces off with the local gangs when they target his client’s family.

Max Payne 3 aims to change what we know and love about the Max Payne series by giving us new physics, a new game engine, realistic weaponry, a cover system, and even better bullet-time mechanics. Rockstar will also include a multiplayer mode for the first time in the series history. I’m curious to see if bullet-time actions will be present in the multiplayer and how many pills will be a-poppin’ for health regeneration.

Do you still not believe? Then hit the jump for two new screenshots as well. (more…)

Batman: Arkham City soundtrack rocks with Panic! at the Disco, Coheed & Cambria, more

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and WaterTower Music have announced that Batman: Arkham City – The Album will be available on October 4, two weeks ahead of the game’s October 18 release date on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The album will also be available digitally as a bonus download inlcuded with the Arkham City Collector’s Edition.

Featuring music “inspired by” the highly anticipated sequel, Batman: Arkham City – The Album will include new songs from Panic! At The Disco, Coheed and Cambria, Daughtry, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Serj Tankian and more.

Coheed and Cambria frontman Claudio Sanchez is very excited to bring his musical storytelling to Gotham City. “I write in a very conceptual format with the stories that surround Coheed and Cambria, but Batman has a much larger, defined history and rules that go along with it. My goal was to find universal themes from Batman’s existing history to help give the lyrics legs and dimension so that the song could live within that world,” Sanchez said.

The full track listing can be found after the break. (more…)

Fox & Friends guest has a stroke over SimCity and gaming’s “liberal agenda”

This just in… Fox News is out of touch. Wait, that’s not exactly news. But it is funny. And moronic. But mostly funny.

On the September 3rd edition of Fox & Friends, host Clayton Morris and guest T.J. McCormack spoke about “green” games. Specifically about how they promote a “liberal agenda” of environmentalism and make kids “freak out.” Watch the video above to see for yourself.

If you’d rather not subject yourself to the latest media plot against video games, here’s what McCormack had to say about SimCity Societies (a game that came out in 2007 by the way) and its theme of respecting the environment:

“Kids with sweaty palms are freaking out that they’re going to kill a bunch of virtual polar bears. Virtual polar bears!”

McCormack later cites two browser games, McDonald’s: The Game (which is from 2006) and Fate of the World (a relatively recent 2010 game), as examples of “green” games that kids are playing and freaking out over. It should probably be noted that five year olds with sweaty palms aren’t playing these games. They’re methodical and deep strategy games that are typically played by adults. Yes Mr. McCormack, adults can play video games.

But you know what? Making fun of someone this stupid and out of touch isn’t even worth it. You win Fox News. Games promote the liberal agenda to little kids. It’s true. Especially games based on a major Fox property like Avatar.
