Night Trap will be released for PC and PS4 on August 15

Screaming Villains has announced that Night Trap will make its radical return as a downloadable game for the PC and PS4 on August 15. The game is also in development for the Xbox One, and it’ll be available for Microsoft’s console at a later date.

Night Trap was one of the first games to use Full Motion Video (FMV), and was originally released for the Sega CD all the way back in 1992. This 25th Anniversary re-release includes the original game, as well as a special Survival Mode with randomized enemies, and a Theater Mode to watch all the story-related scenes in one sitting. A behind-the-scenes documentary will also be included to educate a new generation of fans about the game that scandalized a nation for its depiction of vampires invading a teenager’s slumber party.

Superfans will be able to pick up a copy of Night Trap a bit earlier. Limited Run Games will launch a Blu-ray version of the FMV classic in both a Standard Edition and a Collector’s Edition on August 11.

Kickstart This! Epistasis

Regular readers will know of my love for No Man’s Sky, or at very least, my desire for a truly far-reaching space exploration game. I traversed land and stars in No Man’s Sky for over 60 hours, and enjoyed the freedom of being lost in its universe. However, my enthusiasm waned when it became clear that Hello Games hadn’t built an end goal. There was no deep mystery to uncover and no puzzles to solve beyond the random riddles that became rudimentary.

Unfortunately, I have not had time to return to the lush galaxies and poetic planets since the release of the updates. But part of me wonders whether I should move forward and try to find something that seeks to be the game that No Man’s Sky never was.

So follow me as we stumble though another alien portal in the latest edition of Kickstart This! (more…)

Doom’s Update 6.66 includes improvements to multiplayer and makes all DLC free

In a callback to the franchise’s earliest days, Bethesda and id Software are calling Doom‘s new Update 6.66 the “Ultimate” way to play.

The biggest addition in Update 6.66 is that it’ll make Doom’s three downloadable expansions (Unto the Evil, Hell Followed, and Bloodfall) free for all players. But id Software has also revamped the way players will experience the game’s multiplayer modes, including a complete revision of the Multiplayer Progression System. The developer has also ditched the Hack Module System (and replaced it with multiplayer-specific Runes), redone the user interface, and made vast improvements to the SnapMap creation tool.

More details about the changes that Update 6.66 will bring to the game are available at Bethesda.net, as well as in the new trailer embedded above:

With this update, we’ve changed when and how players unlock additional guns, demons, equipment and all of the player and weapon customization options. Instead of relying on the current random unlock system, everything now unlocks through specific leveling requirements and/or in-game challenges. Now, if there’s a specific helmet you want, you can work toward unlocking it by focusing your play style on the related challenge. We’re confident new and veteran players alike will enjoy the control and predictability in this new multiplayer progression system.

If Doom is still on your digital wishlist, Bethesda and id Software have one last piece of good news… Doom will now be available to download through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Steam for just $14.99.

EA confirms Battlefield V is coming in 2018; Battlefield 1 is getting Esports Mode and GOTY Edition this Fall

UPDATE: EA has announced that “Battlefield 6” will officially be known as Battlefield V.

ORIGINAL STORY: Electronic Arts isn’t afraid of Call of Duty’s return to World War II this Fall, and company executives recently laid out their plans for the Battlefield franchise during the company’s most quarterly financial report.

First, CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed that Battlefield 6 will be released in 2018. Discussing the publisher’s plans for next year, he said, “We’ll continue delivering for our Battlefield fans, including the next great game in the franchise.”

However, it looks like Battlefield 1 will also play a big role in EA’s future. In addition to next year’s sequel, Wilson announced that a “Game of the Year Edition” is in the works, as well as an official Esports Mode:

We will detail our plan for a new offering that will bring the richest Battlefield 1 experience yet, including the all-out warfare, epic multiplayer battles, and War Stories campaign that have defined the game plus new maps, deeper progression, and additional fan-favorite game modes, all in a single package.

At Gamescom, we’ll debut a new way to play Battlefield 1 built for competition and designed with direct input from our Battlefield community. Through a growing portfolio of digital and traditional broadcast deals, our spectator reach will continue to expand, with major brands set to engage this high-value audience through global sponsorships.

Blake Jorgensen, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, further elaborated on Battlefield 1’s Esports Mode later in the report:

People have used Battlefield as an esports product for many years outside of EA. It’s a fun fast-paced game. But with 64-player multiplayer, it’s a bit hectic and chaotic for esports. And so you’ll see some new modes coming out that will benefit a more rational esports approach, and pretty exciting for us for this year and really powering next year and the year after off of that title.

Battlefield 1’s “Game of the Year Edition” and Esports Mode will both be available sometime later this year.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus gets a new trailer and a Season Pass

Bethesda teased a bit of the “Strawberry Milkshake” sequence from Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus during this year’s E3 Expo, but now you can see the whole thing in the new trailer embedded above:

Mmm, the strawberry milkshake. A delicious summer treat so refreshing, it’s considered to be a “favorite American thing” to one particular Nazi Kommandant, who decided to pick one up at a local diner in Roswell, New Mexico. Unfortunately, BJ Blazkowicz just happens to be at that same diner, leading to a very tense encounter.

In another bit of Wolfenstein II news, Bethesda has unveiled the game’s Season Pass on Bethesda.net. Priced at $24.99, The Freedom Chronicles will add three playable characters to the game sometime after its launch:

  • Episode Zero – Episode Zero introduces you to Joseph Stallion, Jessica Valiant and Gerald Wilkins as they fight for freedom in the American Territories. Blast your way through Nazis using unique abilities and an arsenal of guns in this opening DLC mission.
  • The Adventures of Gunslinger Joe – As former professional quarterback Joseph Stallion, smash through Nazi hordes from the ruins of Chicago to the vastness of space!
  • The Diaries of Agent Silent Death – As ex-OSS agent and assassin Jessica Valiant, infiltrate Nazi bunkers in California and discover the secrets of Operation San Andreas!
  • The Amazing Deeds of Captain Wilkins – As the US Army’s renowned hero Captain Gerald Wilkins, embark on a mission to Nazi-controlled Alaska to dismantle Operation Black Sun!

As an added bonus, players who pre-order Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will receive the “Episode Zero” mission for free.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on October 27.

Graceful Explosion Machine will blast its way onto the PC and PS4 on August 8

Vertex Pop’s Graceful Explosion Machine added a bit of color to launch of the Nintendo Switch this Spring, but it looks like the side-scrolling shooter will warp to several new destinations next month. According to a post on the developer’s official website, Graceful Explosion Machine will be released for the PC and PS4 on August 8.

In addition to launching Graceful Explosion Machine on a pair of new platforms, Vertex Pop has also been working to update the game on the Switch. Fans will definitely notice the faster loading times, but an expanded stats screen is also on the docket:

We started by redesigning the score screen to give a clearer breakdown of your score, weapon usage, and additional stats that better reflect your play style. It’s both fun and functional.

We also wanted to make it easier to capture and share those clutch GEM moments. Once you’re in the zone, we know it’s hard to stop the game even for a few seconds to grab a screenshot, so we had to come up with a really creative solution.

Or, more accurately, a really technical one: We designed an AI system to pinpoint the most exciting moment of your run, which we then automagically screenshot and display on the score screen. You can fullscreen it, add it to your Album, share it, etc.

This update for Graceful Explosion Machine is now available to download on the Nintendo Switch, and will be available for the PC and PS4 when the game launches on August 8.

“Version 1.0” of 20XX will be available through Steam on August 16

The world was introduced to 20XX (then known as Echoes of Eridu) in April 2014 thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign by Batterystaple Games. The developer has given fans a huge window into their development process since then, thanks to the Early Access launch of 20XX on November 25, 2014.

Now, after more than three years of active development, the team has announced plans to release “Version 1.0” through Steam on August 16. Battlestaple’s Chris King discussed what this achievement will mean for fans on 20XX’s Steam Community page:

The 1.0 patch will include 20XX’s Endgame, the final set of challenges that cap off every run. The other side of that Level 8 teleporter will soon be live to the world, and the answers our heroes have been fighting for are finally right around the corner.

If you’ve been part of our Early Access community — you’re the best. Thanks for helping shape the game these past few years! 20XX is a much better game for having had you, especially if you’ve done us the kindness of giving us feedback, reporting bugs, and telling your friends.

To go along with the announcement, Batterystaple also unveiled a new trailer for 20XX. It’s been embedded above.
