4/1: thatgamecompany is NOT adding Rocket Death Match DLC to Journey

Journey has been praised for its delicate gameplay and serene score. So naturally, thatgamecompany has decided to throw all of that out for the game’s first downloadable expansion. Available on April 1, 2014, the “Rocket Death Match DLC” pack will add a pretty self-explanatory punch to your next journey into Journey.

Gag Reflex: Adding rocket launchers to the leading proponent of the “games as art” movement is an obvious April Fool’s Day joke. The trailer is fun, but I think it didn’t go far enough. The rockets need to look even more ridiculous and a few explosions would have made my day.

4/1: Capcom will NOT release Super Duper Street Fighter IV

superduperstreetfighterAfter Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, it’s not hard to believe that Capcom would release one more update to the popular fighting game. And guess what? According to the Capcom-Unity blog, it’s Super Duper:

Introducing the Duper Meter. This will sit below the Super Meter and be easily identifiable with it’s Yellow color. With the Duper meter, Super moves can now take on the properties of EX Moves after their activation or be used to strengthen EX moves in general. The Duper Meter also builds 1.5 times faster than the normal Super Meter. Now players will get even more options to select from as we know Street Fighter 4 players love option selecting.

Super Duper Street Fighter IV won’t be coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 anytime soon because it’s an April Fool’s Day joke.

Gag Reflex: Previous games in the Street Fighter series have carried run-on titles like Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike: Fight For the Future, so “Super Duper” isn’t that much of a stretch. You probably won’t stumble across a more believable hoax all day.

Favorites dominate Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote during round two

maddennfl25-covervote-round3I know it happened on Wednesday, but the higher seeds dominated the final voting in the second round of the Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote. Michael Strahan on the Old School side and Ray Rice on the New School side were the only players ranked as the 5th seed or lower able to break through.

That means all-time greats Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Ray Lewis, Deion Sanders, Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, and Dan Marino all live to see another day. They’re joined by Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III, Adrian Peterson, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Rob Gronkowski, and Arian Foster from the New School side.

Any one of these players would make a deserving Madden cover athlete. And you can cast your round three votes at ESPN.com/MaddenVote now through April 3. Be sure to check out the round three matchups after the break. (more…)

Journey collects six statues at 2013 GDC Awards including Game of the Year

journey-header

The people behind the 2013 Game Developers Choice Awards like Journey. They really, really like Journey. Of the 11 awards handed out last night, the thatgamecompany-developed title was named the winner of six of them: Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visual Arts, Best Downloadable Game, the Innovation Award, and Game of the Year.

“This year we saw some amazing titles developed in the indie and downloadable game space, and the critical acclaim that titles like Journey, FTL: Faster Than Light, The Walking Dead, and The Room received could not have been more deserved,” said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of the Game Developers Conference.

While the GDC Awards committee loved Journey, the first-ever Audience Choice Award went to Arkane Studios’ Dishonored. The people have spoken and they really, really like assassinating bad dudes in a steampunk setting!

A complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)

The Last of Us Hands-On Preview: Tension and Fear Win the Day

thelastofus-header

I wasn’t sure what to think when I first saw trailers for The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s first non-Nathan Drake game in six years. It certainly looked like a Naughty Dog game, with the same style and graphics, but this was set in a post-apocalyptic world, one in which humans had been infected by a strange fungus, which left the victims zombified. The remaining survivors of humanity lived in terror in a wasteland. While the Uncharted games had dabbled in science fiction (remember those crazy mutants from the second game?), this was the studio’s first real deviation from reality. I was doubtful that they could pull it off, mainly because the market is so saturated with these types of games, and in the end, not many of them are that great. But from what I saw in the half hour demo at PAX East this past weekend, Naughty Dog just might succeed. (more…)

The Final Word: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain will be “distributed differently”

konami-header

A Konami PR representative shot down Hideo Kojima’s claim that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a single game that would encompass “Ground Zeroes” and “The Phantom Pain” in a statement last night. This morning, a different Konami representative, speaking to CVG, has clarified further.

According to this representative, “Metal Gear Solid V” is a concept represented by two games: The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. As previously stated, Ground Zeroes is the prologue to the game’s main narrative, which will be told in The Phantom Pain. But as a prologue, it’ll be “distributed differently” from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is being developed as a disc-based game for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Ground Zeroes is also in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360, but what form it will take when it’s finally released… digital download, separate disc, or some combination of the two… wasn’t made clear.

This jives nicely with Kojima’s desire to create “pilot episodes” to get players interested and engaged in his future games.

Wait! The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes might be two separate games after all

konami-header

OK, this is getting ridiculous. Siliconera has contacted Konami to get to the bottom of the Metal Gear Solid 5/The Phantom Pain/Ground Zeroes mess and to figure out how many new Metal Gear Solid games are actually in development. The answer they got may surprise you.

Jay Boor, Konami’s Director of Public Relations, said: “Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two separate games. GZ will be a prologue to The Phantom Pain.”

That seems to contradict what Hideo Kojima said earlier this morning when he stated that “Ground Zeroes” is the tutorial that leads to the nine-year time skip before “The Phantom Pain” in Metal Gear Solid V.

I take it back, this whole situation isn’t almost as absurd as the plot of your average Metal Gear Solid game, it’s worse.
