“Death Comes For All” in this new Darksiders II trailer

Darksiders II is coming out in just a few weeks, and this new trailer doesn’t make the wait any easier. This is an all-gameplay trailer, too, which means everything you’re seeing is what you’ll be playing. I have to say, I like the character design for Death. He’s less Grim Reaper and more… well… bad-ass horseman. I dig it.

Darksiders II comes out on August 14 for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Quantum Conundrum to receive two DLC packs before Summer’s end

Square Enix has announced that Airtight Games’ Quantum Conundrum will be receiving a double dose of DLC by the end of Summer. The first pack, entitled “Desmond’s Debacle,” will explore an entirely new wing of the Quadwrangle mansion with the former butler and “Chief Button Collector” himself. It will launch on Steam on July 31, and two weeks later on the PSN and Xbox Live.

A month later, players will be able to invest in “IKA-aramba!,” with a mission to rescue the titular IKE (Interdimensional Kinetic Entity). In this DLC, players will have to “leap seemingly endless chasms while traveling through a newly discovered wing of Quadwrangle Manor.” How many undiscovered wings does this mansion have? The second pack hits Steam on August 28 and, once again, two weeks later on the PSN and Xbox Live.

Both packs will be available for the rather reasonable price of $2.99 (or 240 Microsoft Points) for PS3 players, Xbox 360 owners, and Steam users.

Square Enix CEO says Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still in development

The saga of Final Fantasy Versus XIII took another strange turn today as Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada denied reports the game has been canceled. In a post on Twitter, Wada claimed that Kotaku was taken in by “a hoax” and confirmed that the game is still very much in development.

The CEO also revealed that he recently attended a meeting related to the game and praised the “quality of the cityscapes.”

So Final Fantasy Versus XIII isn’t dead, but it still doesn’t have a release date or even a tentative plan for when it’ll make it’s next public appearance.

Lollipop Chainsaw’s Pop Culture Yearbook

At first glance, the pairing of game developer Goichi “Suda 51” Suda and filmmaker James Gunn seemed to come out of nowhere. But a shared love of pop culture brought them together and allowed them to create the madcap world of Lollipop Chainsaw‘s resident zombie slayer, Juliet Starling.

Naturally, neither one could resist packing it with as many pop culture references as they could think of… (more…)

Borderlands 2 has a 58-hour campaign… and development has been completed

Gearbox is certainly giving gamers value for money with the much anticipated sequel to their cel-shaded FPS, Borderlands. In a genre known for its stingy single player campaigns as developers focus on multiplayer, it is heartening to hear what Steve Gibson, Gearbox’s VP of Marketing, had to say about Borderlands 2‘s 58-hour campaign:

“What we like to think about it is, Borderlands is a hobby. Some guide guys just did a playthrough of Borderlands 2 and they reported back to us that it takes 58 hours to play through the campaign – and that’s just one playthrough with one character. So the depth with which people can get into that… Yeah we look at it as a hobby, and that isn’t even counting the new Badass Points system and how that’ll affect every character you do. We want it to feel like you get more for your money, we’re happy for people to pay their money once and feel that they get ongoing value.”

The Badass system Gibson refers to Achievement-esque tokens that the player will receive for performing certain tasks or feats. These can then be cashed in to improve character stats across the board, so if you start the game with a new character class, your Badass ranking will carry over.

Considering the original game took 30-40 hours to complete depending on how many side-quests you chose to do, it looks as if Gearbox has cooked us up quite the psycho stormbrew. The company has announced that the game has been sent for certification, which means it is fully finished, locked, and loaded. The team is now hard at work on post-launch content, including the new playable character, The Mecromancer. The new female cyborg character DLC will be released 60 to 90 days after the game launches, and will be free to members of the Borderlands Premiere Club i.e. those who place a pre-order of the game.

Square Enix is probably going to announce Final Fantasy XIII-3 on September 1

Square Enix will be celebrating the Final Fantasy franchise’s silver anniversary during a special Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event in Japan next month. In addition to the typical celebration stuff, the publisher plans to reveal new details about the future of the Final Fantasy XIII series.

Scheduled for September 1 at 11:30 AM (Japan Standard Time), the announcement will come as part of a panel titled “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation” and will likely feature a Final Fantasy XIII-3 announcement.

A third Final Fantasy XIII game is the most likely outcome for this presentation as Square Enix previously announced the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2 downloadable content with the “Requiem of the Goddess” pack. Adding more fuel to the FFXIII-3 fire is the suspected cancellation of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Final Fantasy XIII-3 is basically the only FFX13-related announcement Square Enix could be making.

Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII canceled

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been in development for at least six years and in all that time, only a handful of trailers for the game have ever been released. No one outside of Square Enix has ever played the game, which was purported to feature gameplay similar to the Kingdom Hearts series.

And now it looks like no one ever will.

According to a report on Kotaku, Square Enix has quietly canceled the last unreleased game from their “Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy” project.

Kotaku’s tipster went on to say that the publisher has no plans to publicly announce the cancellation, due to fears of what the news will do to its stock price. When asked for comment on the game’s development status, Square Enix replied with this cryptic statement: “We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.”

If you notice, they completely sidestepped Kotaku’s original question, “Is Final Fantasy Versus XIII still in development?”

A second source told Kotaku that “development and resources” behind Final Fantasy Versus XIII have already been folded into the development of Final Fantasy XV. However, exactly what this means for the franchise’s next numbered entry is unclear.

New Releases: MiCoach by Adidas, More

With a solitary new release last week and just a handful of new releases scheduled for this week, I think gamemakers are doing everything they can to avoid the juggernaut that is The Dark Knight Rises.

Can you blame them? But three games did manage to slip through to store shelves…

505 Games is bucking the trend by releasing MiCoach by Adidas for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The exercise game is joined by a pair of DS games, the high-speed puzzle platformer, To-Fu Collection, and the match-3 puzzle game, Cradle of Persia.
