Jaffe talks Twisted Metal (no sequel or DLC planned) and his future (browser games)

David Jaffe was recently interviewed by Game Informer about his decision to leave Eat Sleep Play, as well as what was in the future – for both him and Twisted Metal.

First off, fans will be disappointed to know that there won’t be a sequel or any DLC for Twisted Metal. “Right now there are no plans,” Jaffe said. “I always thought it was going to be a great game. But we weren’t nursing these illusions that we were making Call of Duty in terms of sales. If it’s a big enough hit I’m sure Sony won’t let it wither on the vine. But right now there are no plans at all.”

So what’s in Jaffe’s future? Well, I’m happy to report that Jaffe said “Scott [Campbell, one of Eat Sleep Play’s co-founders,] has been itching to get into iPhone and Android games for a while. I love those kinds of games, but the article that ran in Salt Lake misrepresented me by saying I wanted to do casual games. I love those games, and one day I may want to make them, but I’m very interested in the browser space as well as the next-gen space.”

I was ecstatic to read that – though the whole “browser space” comment worries me. Jaffe is too brilliant to leave console game development. But he gave me hope by adding “There hasn’t been a game in the browser space in my opinion that speaks to players and gamers that I usually make games for.” Hey! I’m one of those gamers! I think I’d still prefer a new Jaffe console game, though.

Twisted Metal will be out February 14.

Medal of Honor 2 to be unveiled at GDC 2012

EA has sent out an invitation confirming the announcement of a sequel to 2010’s Medal of Honor, according to GameSpot.

The invitation indicates that EA’s announcement will be on Tuesday, March 6, at 8 PM PST. This puts it right smack in the middle of the 2012 Game Developer’s Conference, which is in San Francisco from March 5 to March 9.

I personally am thrilled to hear that they’re releasing a sequel – I loved Medal of Honor and played a ludicrous amount of it. Also, my birthday is on March 8, so I can’t think of a better present EA could give me. Thanks, guys!

Square Enix brings back True Crime series as Sleeping Dogs

About six months ago, Square Enix picked up Activision’s discarded open-world game, True Crime: Hong Kong. Now, the Japanese publisher has rechristened the game Sleeping Dogs and announced that it’ll be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in the second half of 2012.

Developed by United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs (like the True Crime series before it) flips the typical open-world game on its head. Instead of featuring the criminal element in all of their sadistic glory, it follows an undercover cop, Wei Shen, as he infiltrates the Hong Kong Triad. Naturally, this involves a lot of fighting and brutal combat:

Offering players an island packed with action, every street corner, market stall, harbor dock or city skyscraper can become an opportunity for intense shoot-outs, adrenaline-fuelled street races and intense, brutal martial arts combat. Featuring one of the most intuitive and imaginative combat systems, Sleeping Dogs empowers players to perform an extensive set of martial arts moves, singlehandedly taking on numerous opponents. Players perform bone-crunching kicks and combos, vicious counters and a cinematic set of environmental takedowns making use of countless real-world items from circular saws to phone booths, incinerators to refrigerator doors.

To give you an idea of what the melee combat will look like, Square Enix has produced a live action trailer for Sleeping Dogs that you can view after the break. (more…)

Eat Sleep Play downsizing, Jaffe leaving

Eat Sleep Play, the video game company David Jaffe co-founded, has laid off eight employees, and announced that they will be shifting their focus to mobile games. Jaffe himself is leaving the company to “also pursue casual games,” according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

This surprising announcement comes a week before the company is releasing Twisted Metal, their first – and last – triple-A title. Hopefully Jaffe has something crazy up his sleeve.

PSN Today: Simpsons Arcade, Gotham City Impostors, Jak & Daxter Collection, More

Sony has pulled out another of their patented “kitchen sink” updates of the PlayStation Store. This week sees the release of three major PSN games (the long-awaited Simpsons Arcade Game, hitman game Shank 2, and multiplayer shooter Gotham City Impostors) as well as all three games from the Jak and Daxter Collection.

Speaking of the Jak and Daxter Collection, the complete package is available from the Full PS3 Games section as well as the sexually charged Catherine, tennis sim Top Spin 4, and the bricktastic Lego Pirates of the Caribbean.

Rounding out the new releases is the PS2 Classic SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie. And don’t forget that The Simpsons Arcade Game is free to PlayStation Plus subscribers (as well as Final Fantasy V). Oh, and the first episode of “The Tester” season three is now available.

Yup, kitchen sink time. You can find out more about all these new releases after the break. And for a complete listing of all of this week’s new game add-ons, head over to the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

CoD Modern Warfare 3 Elite update: Overwatch map comes to Xbox 360 on February 21

Yes, the third Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 content drop has a February 21 release date. But remember, that date is only for Call of Duty Elite subscribers. And only for Elite subscribers who own an Xbox 360 copy of Modern Warfare 3.

This drop consists of a single map, Overwatch, which is set in New York City and not for those who are scared of heights:

Shots break out on a construction site atop a New York City skyscraper. Battle takes place along two levels in a near symmetrical layout, with the central bridge and side routes open to attack from multiple angles. Watch your every step, as a lack of boundaries surrounding the perimeter leaves nothing to prevent you from falling far to the ground below.

It’s likely that Overwatch will be made available to PC and PS3 players in March, as part of the first “Modern Warfare 3 Content Collection.”

The Simpsons Arcade Game Review: D’oh That To Me One More Time

It has been a little more than two decades since The Simpsons Arcade Game debuted in arcades and threatened to siphon the quarters out of our pockets. Konami graced us with a fun beat ’em up starring one of television’s most beloved dysfunctional families back then and now it’s finally available to play on our consoles. Is nostalgia enough to grant the game some staying power or do we have to make it write “I will not be a sucky game” over and over on the blackboard? (more…)
