Check out CoD Modern Warfare 3’s latest single-player trailer: Redemption
I know what you’re thinking, who plays a Call of Duty game for its single-player campaign? Well, for those that do, Activision has released an awesome new trailer, titled “Redemption,” that showcases the World War III-like shenanigans of Makarov and the rest of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 cast.
Oh, and you might also want to know that the game is exactly one month away. That’s right, Modern Warfare 3 will be available in stores on November 8. But I’m going to guess that you actually knew that already.

New Releases: Forza 4, Dead Rising 2 Off the Record, Skylanders, More

Several very different types of games will drive onto store shelves this week and Microsoft’s Forza Motorsport 4 is leading the way. Turn 10’s racing simulator is back for more and now it’s packing a bunch of Kinect-exclusive features as well.
Also available this week is Capcom’s retelling of Dead Rising 2 (from Frank West’s perspective): Dead Rising 2: Off the Record (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). If you ever wanted to see Mr. I’ve Covered Wars You Know as an overweight wrestler fighting zombies, now’s your chance.
Activision’s ambitious action figure/video game mashup Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is also being released this week. The package (which touts its use of “smart toys”) is a bit pricey, but it’ll be available for the 3DS, PC, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.
Finally this week, we get some new air adventures in Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (PS3, Xbox 360) and some old west adventures in Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition (PS3, Xbox 360).
Check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron rolls out in Fall 2012

Activision and developer High Moon Studios have announced that the war for Cybertron will continue in next Fall’s Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. The game will be receiving the Game Informer cover treatment with two different images. The first, which you can see above, features fan-favorite Grimlock alongside Optimus Prime. The second, which can be seen at GameInformer.com, features the possible death of Bumblebee. No!
Fall of Cybertron picks up right where Transformers: War For Cybertron left off and it promises to retell the “final, darkest hours of the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons as they fight for control of their dying planet, ultimately leading to their storied exodus from home.”
“High Moon Studios is an extremely talented development team having raised the bar of gameplay and Transformers authenticity in their games,” said David Oxford, Executive Vice President at Activision Publishing. “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is an extraordinary project both for the studio and the Transformers gaming legacy – the stakes are higher and the scale much larger than ever before, and we absolutely cannot wait for fans to see all the new characters and epic action that awaits them.”
Platforms for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron weren’t announced, but a PS3 and Xbox 360 release seems likely.

Yakuza: Of the End officially coming to US in March 2012 as Yakuza: Dead Souls
I don’t know why Sega ever considered not bringing the zombie-riffic Yakuza: Of the End to America, but today the publisher finally announced the game’s North American release as Yakuza: Dead Souls.
Exclusively available for the PS3, Yakuza: Dead Souls will feature dangerous gangsters that can kill nine times before you hit the ground versus reanimated corpses who are already dead. However will they win? Bringing guns to the series for the first time (and bolting a minigun to the arm of one of the largest Yakuza) might be a good start:
Yakuza: Dead Souls is set in the infamous red light district of Tokyo, which is under attack from hordes of zombies. Players will not only face armies of the undead and incredibly powerful mutants, but a treacherous Japanese underworld that is just as merciless. Playing through the eyes of four of the most infamous characters of the series, witness allegiances shift quickly and the line between friend and foe lost. If you thought zombies were bad… meet the Yakuza!
The western release of Yakuza: Dead Souls will include the complete game as well as all of the downloadable content released in Japan and a new minigame, Pachislot. It’ll also star everyone’s favorite Yakuza member, Kazuma Kiryu.

Mysterious Sony video is just the start of a new ad campaign
Well that was a disappointment. Sony has released the extended version of their mysterious “Long Live Play” video and it looks like it’s just the first in a new series of ads celebrating us, the gamers.
After stepping through the door, the three soldiers are greeted by a horde of PlayStation mascots. Nathan Drake is talking to Lightning. Sweet Tooth is playing chess with Sackboy. Cole MacGrath, Solid Snake, Agent 47, Isaac Clarke, Ezio, Kratos, a Little Sister, Joe Mauer, a Chimera and quite a few more are milling around as well. And in the end, they all celebrate the one man who carries them through their darkest hour. Some dude named Michael.
It’s a neat commercial, but teasing an ad campaign as “something special” is just disappointing.
Crysis, Chrono Trigger, NBA Jam, PS2 Classics, kitchen sink added to PS Store
That’s right, Sony has added the freakin’ kitchen sink to the PlayStation Store this week. OK, not an actual kitchen sink, but there are so many amazing new releases your Internet connection may not be able to handle all the awesome.
They are, in no particular order…
- Crysis – Crytek’s first person shooter that set a new standard for game graphics on the PC is finally available to download on the PS3.
- NBA Jam: On Fire Edition – Everything that made last year’s NBA Jam reboot a hoot has been crammed into this downloadable version.
- Eufloria – This week’s Only On PSN offering, Eufloria is “an addictive game of space exploration, strategy and conquest, plant growth and bio mechanical evolution!”
- Sega Bass Fishing and Space Channel 5 Part 2 – Two Dreamcast classics remade for the PS3.
- Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition and Shift 2: Unleashed – Two PS3 games that have been made available for PSN consumption.
- PS2 Classics (Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Odin Sphere, Ring of Red) – As promised, this quintet of PS2 classics is now available to download from the PSN. They don’t include spiffier graphics or Trophy support, but they’re all classics in every sense of the word.
Also available this week is the PSone Classic Chrono Trigger, the first DLC for Portal 2 (“Peer Review,” which is completely free), and a downloadable version of FIFA Soccer 12 for the PSP.
Wow. Your wallet weeps. Or at least, it should. More details on all of this week’s new releases and game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation.Blog.

Driver: San Francisco Review: Playing Mind Games

It would be very easy to dismiss Driver: San Francisco as yet another failed attempt to revive a franchise that really hasn’t meant much to gaming since the days of the original PlayStation. Some might even say that making a new Driver game is a complete waste of time and resources, considering how tarnished the brand is. However, doing so might actually be a disservice to anyone who’s a fan of unique, open world driving games. If anything, Driver: SF does something that very few games do in the year 2011… it actually wants to be a video game. (more…)
Sony adding Maximo, God Hand, other PS2 games to PS Store
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory is one of the greatest PS2 games ever. No really, it is. If you’ve never played it, you’ll get your chance tomorrow as it’s being added to the PlayStation Store thanks to Sony’s latest promotion, “Only On PlayStation Network.”
PS3 playable versions of more “rare” PS2 titles, including God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Odin Sphere, and Ring of Red, will join Maximo on the PS Store tomorrow.
Sony plans to use the Only On PSN promotion to highlight multiple PSN exclusives during the month of October. These highlights include Sideway: New York on October 11 and InFamous: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller on October 25.
Savings in in store for players who purchase Only On PSN titles as well. PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a 20% discount during the launch week of each Only On PSN game and any PSN user who spends $60 or more in October will receive a $10 PSN credit in November.
