Deus Ex: Human Revolution grafts onto #1 spot in August NPDs

Posted on September 8, 2011 by John Scalzo

I know what you’re thinking… what about Madden? Well, for some strange reason, The NPD Group’s tracking team considers August 30 a part of the September report. Perhaps they’ve taken a few too many hits to the head (BOOM!). But whatever the reason, So Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the bestselling game in August.

Deus Ex may have won, but the industry as a whole lost. A 23 percent drop from August 2011 meant that sales were way down across the board. The lack of a new Madden game in August actually explains that drop pretty well though. Only Nintendo’s repriced 3DS system, which sold 185,000 consoles from August 12 to the end of the period, could be considered a success. Sony’s price cut for the PS3 also increased sales of the HD console.

You can check out the complete top ten for August 2011 right here:

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
2. NCAA Football 12 (Xbox 360, PS3)
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, DS, Wii, PC)
4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (DS, Wii, PS3)
5. Cars 2 (DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
6. Just Dance: Summer Party (Wii)
7. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)
10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)

MK Arcade Kollection, The Baconing, God of War Origins demo added to PS Store

Posted on August 30, 2011 by John Scalzo

Sony’s PSN Play promotion continues with The Baconing ($14.99), the latest installment in the DeathSpank saga. But Hothead’s hero has been pushed aside a bit by another game available today, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection ($9.99). Kompiling Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 together for the first time, the Kollection is a dream for arcade rats from the 90s.

These two titles aren’t the only new additions to the PlayStation Store this week. Not by a long shot. Those looking for a new PSN game can also check out one of these five new releases:

  • 4 Elements HD ($9.99) – A match-3 puzzler.
  • Ugly Americans: Apocalypseageddon ($9.99) – A twin-stick shooter featuring the stars of the Comedy Central show.
  • Shock Troopers ($8.99) – A run-and-gun shooter that originally appeared on the NeoGeo.
  • World Heroes ($8.99) – A NeoGeo fighter where you can pit Rasputin against Joan of Arc or have a Hulk Hogan ripoff battle a Bruce Lee ripoff. No Abraham Lincoln?
  • Elevator Action Deluxe ($9.99) – A newly reimagined version of the classic spy caper. Also includes the original Elevator Action.

Finally, PSN Plus users will receive early access to a demo of God of War: Origins Collection.

On the portable side of things, PSP owners will have a chance to download a quartet of new games including their own version of World Heroes and Shock Troopers as well as Madden NFL 12 and the wild Atlus RPG Cladun X2.

More details on all of this week’s new releases and game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation.Blog.

Street Fighter III, Parasite Eve II, Resistance 3 beta now on PS Store

Posted on August 23, 2011 by John Scalzo

With Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade coming to a close, Sony has picked up the slack with an absolutely stellar slate of offerings in the first week of their PSN Play promotion.

Long overshadowed by its younger brother, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition ($14.99, $11.99 for PSN Plus users) comes to the PlayStation Store as the PSN Play pick. It’ll be joined by Hamilton’s Great Adventure ($9.99), an adventure game, and Comix Zone ($4.99), a PSN port of the popular Genesis-era beat ’em up. Also available this week is the PSone Classic Parasite Eve II ($5.99).

Finally this week, Sony offers up the Resistance 3 multiplayer beta for all PSN Plus subscribers. The full game will be released on September 6, but beta players will be able to get their hands on two of the game’s maps: the Seaside of Glamorgan, Wales, and the Trainyard in Bogota, Colombia.

More information on all of this week’s new games and game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation.Blog.

Oh man, I just realized PAX is next week. Let it be known I am officially freaking out. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Let’s see… Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games is Atari’s Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum which is just $14.99 today for the PC. They’ve also got their new weekly deals up – Dungeon Siege III is $32.99 on consoles and $25.99 on PC, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is $14.99 on PS3 and Xbox 360, and to top it all off, they just announced their Summer Road Trip Handheld Gaming Event. Don’t tell Ryan Littlefield, or he’ll make me buy all the Professor Layton games.

No gaming t-shirts, but I always love references to “A Game of Thrones,” whether I buy ’em or not. Today’s is over at Tee Fury, and it’s called “Game of Crossbones:” (more…)

Good news has come to us from the Prinnies, d00d! Cladun X2, sequel to the quirky retro PSP RPG Cladun: This is an RPG!, will be coming out on the PSN on August 30. According to the latest Prinny Bomb, “ClaDun x2 comes sporting brand new features and dungeons, so get ready to delve into the mysterious land called Arcanus Cella and rid the world of baddies once again. Increase your chance of survival by leveling your party using the intricate Magic Circle system!” Righteous!

And don’t forget Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten will be out on September 6. The strategy guide can be ordered from NIS’ site once the game launches, or pre-ordered at GameStop.

On top of that, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice will be $19.99 at the NIS store starting August 16th, and the DLC will be discounted on the PSN. Seriously, this is more Disgaea than I can handle! I think I’ll spend the rest of the day trying to finish up Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness while the rain pours down.

Daily Scoop: August 4, 2011 – Thursday’s here, woo!

Posted on August 4, 2011 by Nicole Kline

It’s Thursday! And Ryan Littlefield and I have off tomorrow! Which means we are going to be playing a crapload of Borderlands. Want to join us? Leave a comment and tell us your PSN name and we’ll add you to the mix! We’re level 27, and we’re running around Earl’s Scrapyard, I think. Come on and take a riiiiiiiiiiiiiide!

Anyway, Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games today is none other than Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles II for the PSP. It’s 50% off at $19.99 today, and that really is a great deal. This strategy RPG is not just a pretty face – it’s also got a great and complex battle system and a fantastic story. Daily Scoop: August 2, 2011 – It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this t-shirt!

Posted on August 2, 2011 by Nicole Kline

Sometimes, I go for days at a time without offering up a t-shirt of the day. Today there are two that I feel I might not be able to live without! But first: today’s deals!

Fortunately, there’s not much to report today. Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games today is Nintendo’s Golden Sun: Dark Dawn for the Nintendo DS, on sale for $19.99. This latest addition to the Golden Sun saga “takes place 30 years after the final events of the second game, when the Golden Sun Effect occurred” and uses the touch control for the battle system. Scoop it up!

Don’t forget to check out Amazon’s bonus offer page as well, which has tons of great promotional credit items – including a free soundtrack with Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin. Good times!

And now, today’s double whammy of t-shirt designs, which are about to make me $20 poorer: (more…)
