Valiant Hearts: The Great War Review: A Valiant Effort

At first glance, Valiant Hearts: The Great War seems bizarre at best and flippant at worst: a cartoon-style puzzle game set during the ugly brutality of World War I. But fortunately, looks are deceiving, as Valiant Hearts is one of the most intriguing (and dare I say it, educational) games of the year. (more…)
Nintendo Download: Super Mario Kart, Mega Man V, Cybernator, more

This week’s Nintendo Download is a great day for fans of the Virtual Console as four classic titles have been added to the eShop.
The biggest name in today’s batch is clearly Super Mario Kart. The Super NES game is considered the forefather of all kart racing games and is still beloved by gamers the world over. So celebrate the 22nd anniversary of its release by downloading it to your Wii U. Joining Super Mario Kart on the Wii U eShop today is Mega Man V, one of the last Mega Man games to be released for the NES, and Cybernator, a shooter originally released for the Super NES.
One Virtual Console title was added to the 3DS eShop as well today, and it’s The Mysterious Murasame Castle, an NES game that was previously only available in Japan. You might recognize it as the basis for Nintendo Land‘s “Takamaru’s Ninja Castle.”
And if you’re looking for more Virtual Console blasts from the past, Nintendo has confirmed that Double Dragon II: The Revenge will be added to the Wii U eShop on August 14 with Life Force following the week after on August 21.
More details on all of these games (as well as two more) can be found after the break. (more…)
Shovel Knight sells 180,000 copies in first month as Yacht Club breaks down budget/sales

When Yacht Club Games created their Kickstarter campaign for Shovel Knight last Spring, they didn’t just set out to create a retro-styled platformer. They also wanted to make the development process more transparent by regularly releasing budget figures and sales numbers.
To that end, the team revealed that their initial budget for Shovel Knight was $1.44 million. So what’s a developer to do when their Kickstarter campaign only brings in $328,000? In Yacht Club’s case, they deferred the salary of their outside composer, split off the Stretch Goals into post-release content, and forgoed paychecks for the last five months of development.
“It was a difficult period, where some of us were awkwardly standing in front of cashiers having our credit cards declined, drawing from any possible savings, and borrowing money from our friends and family,” a Yacht Club team member said.
But it appears to have paid off as the team sold more than 180,000 copies of Shovel Knight during the game’s first month of availability. Amazingly, it’s selling at exactly the same pace on each platform as the 3DS, PC, and Wii U versions all account for about a third of the sales.
With a success on their hands, Yacht Club is ready to embark on creating those promised Stretch Goals. If you’d like to read more about Shovel Knight’s wild ride from Kickstarter darling to beloved game, head over to Yacht Club’s website.

Mario Kart 8 August update includes Mercedes DLC, on-screen map, more
That bizarre Mercedes-Benz DLC will soon be available for Mario Kart 8. Nintendo of Japan has announced that an August 27 update for Mario Kart 8 will include three Mercedes-Benz karts and a comprehensive set of gameplay tweaks… including the return of the course map!
Aside from putting the course map back on your television where it belongs, Mario Kart 8’s August update will include a “Last Used Configuration” for each character and kart combination as well as a Scoreboard screen for each user that lists their total number of coins collected and online win-loss records. The update will also include an increase in the stability of online races and the ability for opponents to copy and edit the Mario Kart TV highlight videos.
As for the Mercedes-Benz DLC, the free kart has now become a trio as the car manufacturer has provided players with the GLA, the W25 Silver Arrow, and the 300 SL Roadster. You can see them all in action in the trailer above.
Nintendo of America has yet to confirm when Mario Kart 8’s first update will be available on our side of the Pacific, but it’s likely we’ll receive it around the end of August as well.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Review: Any Good? Arrr!

The Assassin’s Creed franchise stumbled a bit with Assassin’s Creed III and Revelations. Thankfully, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a return to form for the series. It is a swashbuckling, rum-drinking, sword-slashing good time that works on many levels. However, it’s also very scatterbrained in that half of the game works while the other half doesn’t. The water combat is great, while the undersea portions aren’t. Some story missions are really awesome, while some are tedium defined. And the plot itself is compelling, except when it isn’t. Yet, somehow, Ubisoft has managed to pull it all together to make a really enjoyable title. (more…)
Sheik, Ruto, and Darunia star in the latest Hyrule Warriors trailers
Koei Tecmo Japan has unveiled three more character trailers for Hyrule Warriors and, this time, Shiek, Ruto, and Darunia take center stage.
Sheik is Zelda’s alter ego from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and cuts through a group of Stalfos with ninja-like precision. She also uses a mystical harp to lay waste to the horde with her musical talents.
Two more Ocarina of Time alums star in the other two trailers, which are both available after the break. Ruto is the Princess of the Zoras and, as you’d expect, she uses a lot of water-based attacks during her time in the spotlight. Darunia’s trailer features the Goron King going to town on a group of enemies with a massive hammer.
Hyrule Warriors will be available exclusively for the Wii U on September 26. But if you can’t wait that long, Nintendo will highlight Hyrule Warriors during their next Nintendo Direct broadcast, which is scheduled for Monday, August 4 at 11:00 PM (Eastern). (more…)

Nintendo Download: Mega Man Battle Network, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids, more

After busting up the 3DS eShop during “Mega May,” Capcom’s longtime mascot will take a swipe at the Wii U in August. Every week, a classic Mega Man game will be added to the Wii U eShop. Best of all, they’re kicking things off today, on what is technically the last day of July, with Mega Man Battle Network. Battle Network Mega Man’s first foray into RPGs and it launched an entire series of games as well as multiple spinoffs. Perhaps we’ll see some of them again over the next few weeks.
A different kind of robot warrior stars in this week’s major 3DS release, Lego Ninjago: Nindroids. The latest Lego game from WB Games and TT Games, it’s based on the television show of the same name and transports the Lego Ninjago ninjas into a sci-fi setting.
Other games added to the eShop today include….
- XType Plus (Wii U), a vertically-scrolling shooter.
- Frederic: Resurrection of Music (Wii U), a piano-playing game of “musical duels.”
- IQ Test (Wii U), a puzzling game to challenge your intellect.
- Tangram Attack (Wii U), a Tangram-type puzzler.
- Steel Empire (3DS), a portable remake of the Genesis/GBA shooter.
More information on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)
