Look! Up in the sky! It’s a new release for the Wii U!

Nintendo’s next-generation system is gathering steam as we head into the Fall gaming period and it continues this week with the release of Scribblenauts Unmasked. Supposedly, the game, which will also be available for the 3DS, brings together every DC Comics character ever in a massive superhero/supervillain crossover.

Gamers will also be able to go for the goal this week as the two biggest soccer game franchises go head-to-head. FIFA 14 (EA Sports has finally dropped the “Soccer” from the title) will be released for the PS3, Vita, and Xbox 360 this week. Meanwhile, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

If soccer isn’t your thing, Armored Core, the giant mech series from From Software, is back with a new installment. Armored Core: Verdict Day will be available this week for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Finally this week, the romantic RPG Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi comes to the 3DS from Aksys in both Standard and Limited editions.

Nintendo plans to add a bunch of new games to the DSiWare Shop, 3DS eShop, and Wii U eShop over the next few days, including one of the most acclaimed GameCube games ever and everybody’s favorite NES game.

Let’s start with today’s additions to Nintendo’s download services. The NES classic Super Mario Bros. is now available on the Wii U eShop, but the real action is on the 3DS. Nintendo’s handheld will receive Star Wars Pinball, Solomon’s Key, Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi, Rage of the Gladiator, AiRace Speed, Mahjong 3D: Essentials, and Shifting World today. There’s a little something for everyone there including a few puzzles games, a great fantasy fighter, a romantic RPG, and a racer. If you’re still rocking a DSi, two interactive stories (Tales to Enjoy! The Ugly Duckling and Tales to Enjoy! Three Little Pigs) were also added to the DSiWare Shop today.

So what else can we look forward to? Tomorrow, Nintendo will add The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD to the Wii U eShop, a full two weeks before its disc-based debut. And on Tuesday, Wii U and 3DS owners will be able to go on a superheroic adventure with Superman, Batman, and hundreds of other DC characters in Scribblenauts Unmasked. Finally, FIFA 14 will also be added to the 3DS eShop on Tuesday.

More information on all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

Full version of Wii Fit U available as a month-long trial download on November 1

wiifitu-header

Nintendo is trying something a little different with the release of Wii Fit U. If you’ve got a Wii Balance Board, the game will be available through the Wii U eShop as a free download beginning on November 1. Naturally, there’s a catch.

The free download of Wii Fit U includes the full and complete game… all 77 Activities, all the Custom Workout options, and all the Miiverse support. But the download comes with a countdown clock that only gives you 30 days of access after the game is first launched. If you want to continue using Wii Fit U, you’ll have to purchase a separate Fit Meter (for $19.99), which will be available in stores on November 1.

If you’d prefer to bypass this offer and just buy Wii Fit U outright, the game will be available in stores on December 13 (in both game-only and game + Balance Board editions) and as a paid download through the Wii U eShop on February 1, 2014.

Wii Sports Club comes to Wii U eShop on November 7

wiisportsclub-logoNintendo is bringing Wii Sports back in a big way on the Wii U this Fall. The Wii pack-in’s five sports – bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing and golf – will get a high definition makeover as part of the “Wii Sports Club,” a series of downloadable titles that will be released separately through the Wii U eShop. These “Wii-makes” will also include MotionPlus support and online multiplayer.

Wii Sports Club: Tennis and Wii Sports Club: Bowling will be available to download on November 7, with Wii Sports Club: Baseball, Wii Sports Club: Golf, and Wii Sports Club: Boxing scheduled for release “in the months ahead.”

Each Wii Sports Club title will be priced at $9.99, but Nintendo also plans to release a demo version of each sport. In addition to the standard purchasing model, Nintendo is attempting something different with the Wii Sports Club “Day Pass.” Priced at $1.99, the Day Pass will give players access to all five sports for a 24-hour period.

Mighty No. 9 reaches PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U stretch goal

mightynonine-header

The Kickstarter campaign for Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9 has reached a huge funding milestone. Shortly before midnight, the total pledged amount crossed $2.2 million, ensuring that the spiritual successor to Mega Man will be released for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The console editions of Mighty No. 9 join the previously confirmed PC version (which also includes Mac and Linux options) and all versions of the game are expected to be completed by Spring 2015.

There’s still two weeks remaining before Mighty No. 9’s Kickstarter campaign is closed to new pledges. That leaves plenty of time to cross the PS4/Xbox One threshold, which is currently set at $3.3 million.

New Releases: Grand Theft Auto V, The Wonderful 101, More

grandtheftautov-box-largeThis week’s edition of “New Releases” will be considerably shorter than normal because of one game: Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V. Almost every other publisher is taking the week off to avoid the PS3 and Xbox 360 juggernaut. The theme of GTA5 is “The Almighty Dollar” and with almost no competition this week, Rockstar will be sure to rake in a lot of them.

But Nintendo has never been a company that cares about what other publishers are doing, so they’ve slotted The Wonderful 101 into the calendar as the week’s other big release. The Platinum Games-developed strategic superhero squad simulation is available in stores today for the Wii U.

The remaining new releases are made up of a smattering of budget titles including Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver (3DS, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360), We Sing: 80s (Wii), Takedown: Red Sabre (PC), and a boxed copy of Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded (PC).

The Wonderful 101 Review: Another Golden Hit From Platinum Games

wonderful101-header

With its crazy sense of style, colorful worlds, and oddball humor, The Wonderful 101 feels like Director Hideki Kamiya’s spiritual successor to Viewtiful Joe. As the title suggests, instead of controlling just one masked superhero, you take charge of a 100-strong battalion as the 101st member of the squad. So how does controlling an army of shape-shifting warriors handle?

In a word? Viewtifully. (more…)

New releases lead the way in August 2013 NPD report of best-selling games

maddennfl25-sandersThe NPD Group has released their monthly report on the financial health of the video game industry and, good news, retail game sales in August 2013 increased 21% over the same period last year. The entire retail game industry (games, consoles, and accessories) raked in $521 million, an increase of 1% over August 2012. Though the report estimates this number accounts for only half of all video game spending in August when you factor in used games, rentals, digital sales, add-on content, subscriptions, mobile apps, and social network microtransactions that the NPD doesn’t track.

Most of the increase in game sales was due to a stronger than usual slate of August releases. In fact, only two games in the August top ten are holdovers from previous months (Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition at #5 and NCAA Football 14 at #7).

The remainder of the top ten is populated entirely by new titles: Madden NFL 25 (#1), Saints Row IV (#2), Disney Infinity (#3), Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (#4), Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (#6), Payday 2 (#8), Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (#9), and Pikmin 3 (#10).

If you’d prefer the top ten in list format, you can find it right here:

Bestselling Games in August 2013
1. Madden NFL 25 (Xbox 360, PS3)
2. Saints Row IV (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
3. Disney Infinity (Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, Wii U, 3DS )
4. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC)
5. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (Xbox 360)
6. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS)
7. NCAA Football 14 (Xbox 360, PS3)
8. Payday 2 (Xbox 360, PS3)
9. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (PS3, PC)
10. Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
