The Last of Us wins five Best of E3 2012 awards

It’s hard to argue with those who believe The Last of Us reigned supreme at this year’s E3 Expo. That claim has been given some further validation by the Game Critics Awards, which handed five “Best of E3 2012” statues to Naughty Dog for The Last of Us.

The game, which stars two survivors of a post-apocalyptic America, won “Best of Show,” “Best Original Game,” “Best Console Game,” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.” It also took home a “Special Commendation for Sound.”

No other game came close, though Dance Central 3, Halo 4, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown all won two awards and Watch Dogs collected two Commendations.

The Wii U was mostly shut out of the awards show, though the system itself won “Best Hardware” and the multiplatform Injustice: Gods Among Us won for “Best Fighting Game.”

A complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)

Iwata: Wii U launch price will be “reasonable”

Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, was quoted in today’s edition of Yomiuri Shimbun (a major Japanese newspaper) that the Wii U’s launch price would be “reasonable.”

According to Iwata, the company has learned its lesson from the lukewarm 3DS launch: “We won’t make the same mistake that we did with the 3DS [launch price], which was considered relatively high by consumers.”

An unnamed financial analyst was quoted in the Yomiuri Shimbun article that the Wii U’s break-even price is 30,000 yen ($377), making it hard to reconcile the idea of a “reasonable” launch price and Nintendo’s desire not to sell their systems at a loss.

Hopefully, Nintendo will release the official launch price soon.

Namco Bandai developing Super Smash Bros. 4

Nintendo will hold their next Nintendo Direct address at midnight tonight, but first, they put on a similar show for Japanese audiences and revealed a bit more about Super Smash Bros. 4.

First announced during last year’s E3 Expo, Super Smash Bros. 4 is in the works for the Wii U and 3DS… but not at Nintendo. Company President Satoru Iwata revealed that Namco Bandai has been recruited to develop the game, which will be produced by Masaya Kobayashi, who was formerly head of the Ridge Racer team. But don’t worry, series creator Masahiro Sakurai is also onboard as the Director of Super Smash Bros. 4.

Development on Super Smash Bros. 4 is still likely in the early stages, so it may be a while before we learn more.

EA has at least two unannounced Wii U games in the works

When Mass Effect 3 was announced for the Wii U, myself and many others were left scratching our heads. Unlike the port of Batman: Arkham City, which while a sequel is a standalone game, Mass Effect 3 is the third entry in a series where choices carry on from the previous two. To only release the third entry seems a little bizarre.

Thankfully, EA Labels President Frank Gibeau has spoken up about the company’s further plans for Nintendo’s new touchscreen baby. Gibeau told CVG that they have at least two more games currently in development for the Wii U: “We’ve got a couple of more games in development for Wii U and we’ll have a bigger line-up for Wii U than we did on the Wii.”

While not stated explicitly, his comments (and promise of more details this Summer) imply that these unannounced titles will be released within the Wii U’s launch window in late 2012. This at least goes some way to solidifying the statements made by EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello during last year’s E3 Expo when he said his company was embarking on “an unprecedented partnership” with Nintendo.

While we can all hope for new IPs from EA, the publisher already has a full slate of PC/PS3/Xbox 360 games coming in the Fall including their sports titles, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. So these unannounced titles are likely to belong to one or more of those groups.

However, Riccitiello also described the Wii U tablet controller as “transformational,” which could lead one to speculate that EA is looking at games to better take advantage of the second screen. For example, how about their long-running Command & Conquer series? With Command & Conquer Generals 2 set for 2013, it would be a welcome surprise for the Wii U.

Activision: We will be supporting Wii U

Nintendo has locked up Wii U launch games from a bevy of third-party publishers including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, THQ, Sega, Tecmo, Namco, 2K Games, and WB Games. You’ll notice one major name is missing from that list: Activision.

But don’t panic! Activision has at least one Wii U game in development, they’re just not ready to make any official announcements yet.

The news comes via GamesIndustry International, and a conversation they had with Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, who said, “We don’t have announcements today, but we will be supporting Wii U.”

The publication also spoke to Mark Lamia of Treyarch and pushed both men on the possibility of a Wii U version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Obviously, neither would commit to Black Ops II on the Wii U, but Hirshberg did talk up the tablet features that Call of Duty Elite has brought to Modern Warfare 3 and Lamia had several good things to say about touch control as well.

This is definitely interesting for the future of Call of Duty on the Wii U because, I’m not sure if you’re aware, the Wii U GamePad will include a built-in touchscreen.

TrU or False: Retro Studios developing Star Fox United for Wii U

Over the weekend a rumour spread like wildfire across the internet, that Retro Studios, the geniuses behind the Metroid Prime trilogy, were making a new entry into Nintendo’s furry Star Fox universe, entitled Star Fox United.

It started on the 4Chan imageboards, where several dubious screenshots were posted, along with a retro-looking logo. The story was first picked up by Go Nintendo and others quickly followed suit.

However, the images disappeared almost as soon as they arrived, like a giant explosion in the vacuum of space. Most seem to believe it was a hoax, but there is a little part of me praying this is true. I would love a Nintendo version of Mass Effect, mixing flying missions with third or first-person shooter quests. I can imagine seeing the HD detail of Fox’s fur blowing in the kickback from his gun.

For the moment though, it looks to be a dream upon the stars.

ZombiU puts the “survival” back in survival horror

While Nintendo affixed a “U” on the end of all their Wii U games, Ubisoft’s ZombiU has to take the prize for the most ridiculous reference to Nintendo’s next console. Say it real fast. Sounds kind of like Zom-Wii U doesn’t it?

Wacky title aside, ZombiU also looks to put the “survival” back in the survival horror genre. Using the Wii U GamePad, every time a player looks into their bag or attempts to access an in-game computer, the camera will shift to the tablet controller, ensuring players split their attention between both screens to live.

I’ve got to admit, that’s a pretty great use of the Wii U GamePad. If you missed the E3 trailer above, be sure to give it a watch now.

Miyamoto: Zelda for Wii U is in R&D stage

Last year’s Wii U reveal included a tech demo of Link battling a giant spider in jawdropping high definition. This year, the plucky elf in the green tunic was no where to be seen.

So where was he? Entertainment Weekly pried the answer out of Shigeru Miyamoto yesterday during the closing moments of E3 2012:

EW: So you’re sort of in the R&D stage [for the next Legend of Zelda game]?

Miyamoto: Yeah. With the last game, Skyward Sword, that was a game where you had motion control to use your weapons and a lot of different items, and I thought that was a lot of fun, but there were some people who weren’t able to do that or didn’t like it as much and stopped playing partway through it. So we’re in the phase where we’re looking back at what’s worked very well and what has been missing and how can we evolve it further.

According to Miyamoto, this “research and development stage” involves a lot of experiments at Nintendo including “What is the most important element of Zelda if we were to try to make a Zelda game that a lot of people can play?”

When they figure that out, Miyamoto said, is when Nintendo will announce the next Legend of Zelda game.
