The Witcher 3 hunts down the top spot as May 2015’s best-selling game

witcher3-header

The NPD Group has published their monthly report on the financial state of the video game industry and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has emerged as the best-selling game of May 2015.

The Witcher 3’s victory was assured after the game leapfrogged both of April’s big releases including Mortal Kombat X (#2) and Grand Theft Auto V (#3). The only other May release to make the list, Nintendo’s Splatoon, swam its way into the fifth spot. Though Splatoon should get extra notice for being the only platform-exclusive title in the top ten.

All told, retail sales for games, hardware, and accessories were down 13% versus May 2014. However, Mario Kart 8, Watch Dogs, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and the continued success of TitanFall more than explain the sales gap. The drop-off might have been even bigger if it weren’t for a new wave of Amiibo figures. According to NPD’s Liam Callahan (speaking to GamesIndustry.biz), accessories rose 20% year-over-year, with a 73% increase for “interactive gaming toys.” Callahan also confirmed that the PS4 was the best-selling console of the month.

The complete top ten list of best-selling games for May 2015 can be found after the break. (more…)

New gameplay trailer for Devil’s Third reveals August release for Japan and UK

Tomonobu Itagaki, the creator of the Dead or Alive franchise and the mastermind behind the Ninja Gaiden revival, is finally ready to reveal more about Devil’s Third, his first game with Valhalla Game Studios. In this ten-minute gameplay trailer, the outspoken developer talks a bit about his wild new action game. But unless you’re fluent in Japanese, the finer details of shooting someone with a machine gun or slicing an opponent to ribbons with a katana might be lost on you.

In addition to all the brutal shootings and stabbings, the trailer goes into the story of Devil’s Third, which involves a future without satellites and a return to warfare using hand-to-hand infantry combat with small arms and melee weapons. After this terrorist attack takes out our satellites, the tattooed star of Devil’s Third, who is known as Ivan the Terrible, goes on a one-man crusade to hunt down those responsible.

Besides talking the game up in detail, Itagaki also confirmed the Wii U-exclusive has an official release date in both Japan and the United Kingdom. Devil’s Third will be released on August 4 in Japan and August 28 in the UK (and presumably the rest of Europe). A North American release date has yet to be announced, but Nintendo has promised it’ll be out by the end of the year.

Activision officially announces Call of Duty: Black Ops III for PS3 and Xbox 360

callofdutyblackops3-header

I don’t know what took them so long, but Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 6. In joining the previously-announced PC, PS4, and Xbox One editions of the game, Activision also confirmed the game will not be released for the Wii U.

In development at Beenox and Mercenary Technology, Black Ops III on the previous-generation consoles will substitute four-player cooperative play for two, but otherwise offer the same campaign:

Xbox 360 and PS3 players will be able to experience Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s gameplay across campaign, multiplayer and zombies. While the teams are working to deliver the best possible experience for Xbox 360 and PS3, naturally there will be some differences across generations. For instance, the campaign mode on Xbox 360 and PS3 is currently in development with a goal of enabling two-player cooperative play, instead of the four-player cooperative campaign on next-gen. There will also be some other features and functionality built specifically for the new generation of consoles that cannot be supported on Xbox 360 and PS3. We’ll be sharing more information regarding feature differences from one console generation to another later this year as launch on November 6 approaches.

Finally, Activision promised they would reveal more information about Call of Duty: Black Ops III at this year’s E3 Expo. The biggest game convention of the year will open its doors on June 16, but the Call of Duty franchise typically takes center stage at Microsoft’s Press Conference, which is scheduled for Monday, June 15 at 12:30 PM (Eastern Time).
