Skylanders Giants buzzes into stores on October 21
Meet Swarm. Swarm is a giant bee warrior and he’s going to be stinging his way through the enemies of Skylanders Giants when it release this Fall.
Oh… speaking of release dates… Activision also announced that the game will be available in stores for the 3DS, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 on October 21. A PC version is also planned, but it’s currently without a release date.
Wario Land goes for the gold in this week’s Nintendo Download
With the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games less than 24 hours away, the big game in this week’s Nintendo Download is very fitting. The Olympics are all about the quest for the gold medal and the Game Boy classic, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, is also all about the desire for gold. Though, in this case, Wario is looking for a giant gold statue instead of a tiny medal.
Wario’s first starring role in a game is also one-half of this week’s entry in Nintendo’s “8-Bit Summer.” Mario’s evil twin is joined by the Game Boy puzzler Mole Mania on the 3DS eShop.
Hit the jump for a look at the rest of the games in this week’s Nintendo Download as well a pair of 3DS eShop deals. (more…)

Lego Batman 2 rises to the top of the June 2012 bestsellers list

With editions on seven different platforms, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes rose to the top of The NPD Group’s monthly list of bestselling games. The remainder of the list was split between new releases, May holdovers, and Fall 2011 games that are still popular.
There were only a handful of new games available in June with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (#2), Pokemon Conquest (#7), and The Amazing Spider-Man (#10) all earning spots in the top ten. Grasshopper’s Lollipop Chainsaw didn’t make the cut, continuing Suda 51’s lack of success at the register.
An astounding four games from Fall 2011 continue to sell strongly enough to make the top ten: NBA 2K12 (#5), Batman: Arkham City (#6, boosted by the newly released Game of the Year Edition), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (#8), and Battlefield 3 (#9). I’m sure it helps that all were among the best-reviewed games of last year.
As a whole, game and hardware sales are down 29% from June 2011, according to Joystiq.
A complete list of last month’s best-selling games can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: NCAA Football 13, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, Ice Age 4, More

It is hot. Like, too hot. Too hot to do anything but complain. And complain we will, as we’re in the dog days of Summer and the new release slate is ridiculously bare. Game publishers will eventually jump onto the “Summer Blockbuster” mentality, I just wish they’d do it sooner.
This week’s big new release is NCAA Football 13 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s joined by Sega’s 3DS rhythm game, Rhythm Thief and the Emperor’s Treasure and the multiplatform movie tie-in game, Ice Age: Continental Drift – Arctic Games.

Activison announces Wipeout 3… no, not that one
With the new season underway this week, Activision has announced Wipeout 3, a third game in collaboration with ABC Entertainment, upon whose obstacle course game show it will once again be based. While most gamers will associate the title with high octane futuristic racing, Activision’s Wipeout 3 will instead allow those at home to tackle the many obstacles of the hit show, including those great big red balls.
The new game will make full use of Xbox 360 Kinect and the Wii Remote’s motion controls, as players imitate flailing their arms around to keep their balance. There will also be a 3DS version, but a PS3 version using Move wasn’t announced, marking a departure from Wipeout 2.
It seems Activision and the game show’s producers are targeting the show’s audience with the release, courting the casual gaming market, highlighted by Wipeout’s creator, Matt Kunitz:
“Much of Wipeout’s success has stemmed from the fact that people of all ages enjoy the show. We want to capture that essence with Wipeout 3 so that kids, parents, and even grandparents can plunge into this easy-to-learn, zany game.”
To capture the mood of the show, the game will feature split screen modes and team modes for four players. It will differ from its previous versions by including more characters (although not fully customisable ones), as well as a new storefront where players can purchase additional items to help them overcome an obstacle. You too can challenge the big balls when Wipeout 3 is released in the Fall.
