Daily Scoop: March 7, 2012 – Happy Wednesday!
It’s the middle of the week! And even closer to the weekend for me, as I’ve taken off Friday to recover from Thursday, which is my birthday! Chances are I won’t do a bit of drinking, but hey – it’ll be nice to have a three-day weekend and to sleep in, if you know what I’m saying. Taking off on your birthday is nice, too, but when it doesn’t behave and fall closer to the weekend, what can you do?
Not really much in the way of deals today. Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games is pretty interesting – it’s Sniper Elite by, get this, Maximum Family Games. This Wii game is $19.99 today, and I’m assuming it helps you learn how to be a leet sniper… with your family. In the most maximum way possible.
Does anyone else get a kick out of this, or is it just me???
Alas, only one gaming t-shirt for sale today on the daily sites: (more…)

Madden NFL 13 Cover Nominees: NFC North
Are you ready for some football? How about a long and drawn out fan vote to decide who will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 13? Well, EA Sports has you covered on both.
And we’ve reached the end. With this batch of nominees, the Madden-maker has revealed every division’s nominees for the game’s cover. The 64-player tournament will initially include two players from each team. Beginning March 7, fans can head over to the ESPN SportsNation Facebook Page to decide who will represent each team in the final 32-player bracket.
Today’s nominees come from the NFC North:
Chicago Bears
Jay Cutler or Matt Forte
Detroit Lions
Calvin Johnson or Matthew Stafford
Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers or Clay Matthews
Minnesota Vikings
Jared Allen or Percy Harvin
It looks like EA saved the best for last as the NFC North nominees may be, on the average, the best eight chosen. Especially when that list includes players like Aaron Rodgers (one of the best quarterbacks in the league), Calvin Johnson (one of the best wide receivers in the league), and Matt Forte (one of the best running backs in the league).
So that’s it. We’re done. Get ready to vote on the play-in matches tomorrow and be sure to review all the other nominees. The Madden Curse is hungry!
Madden NFL 13 Cover Nominees: AFC North
Are you ready for some football? How about a long and drawn out fan vote to decide who will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 13? Well, EA Sports has you covered on both.
With just two to go, the Madden-maker has continued to reveal each division’s nominees for the game’s cover. The 64-player tournament will initially include two players from each team. Beginning March 7, fans can head over to the ESPN SportsNation Facebook Page to decide who will represent each team in the final 32-player bracket.
Today’s nominees come from the AFC North:
Baltimore Ravens
Ray Rice or Terrell Suggs
Cincinnati Bengals
Andy Dalton or A.J. Green
Cleveland Browns
Joe Haden or Joe Thomas
Pittsburgh Steelers
Troy Polamalu or Ben Roethlisberger
I don’t think anyone’s surprised, but Peyton Hillis isn’t in the running for the Madden NFL 13 cover. The Madden Curse doesn’t statistically exist, but it’s hard to argue that anyone has ever been hit by it as hard as Hillis.
But among the actual AFC North nominees, I think Baltimore’s Ray Rice has the best shot at the cover. The Raven running back ran for 12 touchdowns, caught three more, and even threw one himself in 2011. That’s impressive.
Madden NFL 13 Cover Nominees: NFC South
Are you ready for some football? How about a long and drawn out fan vote to decide who will appear on the cover of Madden NFL 13? Well, EA Sports has you covered on both.
Every day this week, the Madden-maker has revealed each division’s nominees for the game’s cover. The 64-player tournament will initially include two players from each team. Beginning March 7, fans can head over to the ESPN SportsNation Facebook Page to decide who will represent each team in the final 32-player bracket.
Today’s nominees come from the NFC South:
Atlanta Falcons
Julio Jones or Matt Ryan
Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton or Steve Smith
New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees or Jimmy Graham
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
LeGarrette Blount or Josh Freeman
In 2011, Drew Brees set single-season records for most passing yards, most games over 250 yards, most games over 300 yards, most games over 350 yards, most completions, and highest completion percentage. In short, the man was a passing machine and made quarterbacks like Josh Freeman and Matt Ryan look like rank amateurs. But I wouldn’t count out Cam Newton, he’s the kind of exciting young quarterback that EA Sports used to pick for the cover back when they did the picking themselves.

Indianapolis Colts
Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis
Jacksonville Jaguars
Blaine Gabbert or Maurice Jones-Drew
Tennessee Titans
Chris Johnson or Jake Locker
Andre Johnson didn’t have a great 2011 (in fact, he spent more time injured then he did on the field), but the Texans play-in matchup is certainly the most interesting so far. But out of this eight, it’s hard to argue, except for Arian Foster, that any of them are deserving of the cover of Madden NFL 13.
New Releases: Mass Effect 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, MLB 2K12/MLB 12, More

It’s here. It’s finally here. The grand finale of the Mass Effect trilogy, Mass Effect 3, will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 6. It’s been a long wait (made longer by EA’s decision to delay the game from its original Fall 2011 release date), but it’s almost over.
However, other companies aren’t backing down from the juggernaut that is Commander Shepard…
- Capcom is bowing their 2D crossover fighter Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3, Xbox 360).
- A twin bill of baseball games will be available including Sony’s MLB 12: The Show (PS3, Vita) and 2K’s more inclusive Major League Baseball 2K12 (DS, PC, PS2 (!), PS3, PSP (!!), Wii, Xbox 360).
- Namco Bandai is bringing back the Ridge Racer series in Ridge Racer Unbounded (PS3, Xbox 360), a title that has really managed to stay under the radar.
- Zipper Interactive (creator of the SOCOM series) will make their Vita debut with Unit 13.
- And Nintendo wants everyone to do the Mario one more time on the Wii with Mario Party 9.
Even EA isn’t afraid to compete against itself, as the publisher plans to ship The Sims 3: Showtime for the PC this week in both a Limited Edition and a Katy Perry Special Edition (scandalized muppets not included).
Believe it or not, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are even more new releases after the break. (more…)

Rhythm Heaven Fever Review: Wii Are A Metronome

It’s been a few years since we last visited the world of Rhythm Heaven. Back then, we were only allowed to venture so far in – limited by our tiny screens and the necessity of a pen stylus to play rhythm games. You can put that worry to rest, unless you’re more worried about using the Wiimote for the new Rhythm Heaven Fever. Fever boasts “more than 50 new levels,” though a few of the later levels are just copied and re-skinned from earlier levels to appear different. But playing with the Wiimote makes them all different from the rhythmic minigames that we encountered on the DS. (more…)
