Pre-Black Friday Game Deals 2011: Amazon

Black Friday begins tomorrow, but there are still plenty of deals to be found on this Black Friday Eve Thanksgiving Day.

After a few days of appetizers, Amazon has launched their massive Black Friday sale encompassing hundreds of games. This includes major new releases like Batman: Arkham City, Madden NFL 12, Gears of War 3, and many, many more.

I’m thankful for Metroid II’s release on the 3DS eShop today

It may be hard to believe, but once upon a time, Nintendo didn’t consider Samus Aran one of their premier characters. After Metroid‘s release on the NES back in 1987, it took a full four years before Metroid II: Return of Samus was released. Another mark of the franchise’s second-class status was that it wasn’t released for Nintendo’s cutting edge Super NES or the aging NES, but as a black-and-white Game Boy game.

However, Return of Samus contained all the great Metroid action that fans of the NES original loved and it paved the way for Super Metroid, the Prime series, and the all the rest of Samus’s adventures. And now you can download it on your 3DS.

Here’s what else Nintendo has planned for this week’s Nintendo Download:

Battle of the Elements (DSiWare) – Get ready to travel around the world facing the most powerful characters in intense battles of elements, where you’ll need to think as fast as you move your stylus in order to earn the victory.

Come On! Heroes (DSiWare) – This action game tests your reactions. The “Lovely Heiress” is being held for ransom. Mr. King announces that anyone who brings back his daughter will receive a great reward.

Big Bass Arcade (WiiWare) – Big Bass Arcade is loaded with fishing action. Catch a boatload of fish and take a shot at the World Record Bass. Compete in Challenges and Tournaments, or Free Fish any lake at your own pace.

Xenoblade Chronicles Review: A Love Letter to the RPG That Changed My Life

It was over. I knew as soon as I heard the bones snap. Halfway through an 11-month round the world trip, after witnessing Angkor Wat in Cambodia, scaling the Great Wall of China, bungie jumping and glacier hiking in New Zealand, I managed to break my tibia and fibula in Peru, one day into a four day trek along the Inca trail to the famous Machu Picchu. A five-hour bumpy taxi ride back to civilization. Five days awaiting surgery in a Cusco hospital bed. Then another two weeks lying there, in a country whose language I did not speak, before a 36-hour flight back home to Great Britain.

It is safe to say I needed to escape the depressing circumstance I found myself in. I needed to immerse myself in a world brimming with imagination.

It turns out I needed Xenoblade Chronicles. (more…)

Tuesday is here, and Black Friday is looming! The deals around the Internet have been totally off the hook (and those Target commercials are really getting on my nerves!). Our editor, John Scalzo, has been hard at work amassing all of the Black Friday deals in one place. Behold:

Complete list of 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards nominees

Spike TV has revealed the complete list of nominees for the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards and Portal 2 has teleported back into the public’s consciousness as it leads the way with 11 nominations. Batman: Arkham City is also preparing for a big night as it racked up nine nominations. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception rounds out the top three with seven nominations.

Not surprisingly, those three titles will all vie for this year’s Game of the Year award along with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

There were a few blunders (who wants to break the news to the VGA Advisory Panel that Epic Mickey was released in 2010?), but Spike TV seems to finally be getting the hang of this awards show thing. One thing the channel definitely got right was the love for Bastion, which walked away with five nominations. That’s more than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I’m definitely pulling for “Build That Wall (Zia’s Theme)” by Darren Korb to win Best Song in a Game.

New Releases: WWE 12, King of Fighters XIII, Tekken Hybrid, More

As we all make preparations for the upcoming Black Friday sales, the publishers are making one final push for holiday season new releases.

This week, it’s all about the fight as WWE ’12 (PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), The King of Fighters XIII (PS3, Xbox 360), and Tekken Hybrid make their way to store shelves. Which one is tough enough to find a place on your game shelf?

This week’s batch of new releases also includes a few titles branching out on new platforms as Batman: Arkham City is now available for PC. In the handheld space, Sonic Generations and WWE All-Stars will be released for the 3DS.

Black Friday Game Deals 2011: Sears

Black Friday is less than a week away (November 25, mark your calendars) and retailers have continued to release their annual Black Friday sales circulars.

Like its parent company, Kmart, Sears has attempted to attract video game shoppers all year long. So it’s no surprise that the Black Friday sales at both stores are so similar. The former mail order catalog king will have Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3, Forza Motosport 4, Madden NFL 12, and Need For Speed: The Run available for $39.99, as well as Rage for $29.99. Yes, those same games are available for slightly better prices elsewhere, but the Sears electronics department may be less crowded than your local Best Buy on Black Friday, so plan accordingly. Hmm, I used almost that exact same spiel when talking about the Kmart Black Friday ad.
