Awesomenauts Review: Get Ready to Launch Fun into Space!

Awesomenauts is a colorful and competitive arena game with some light platforming that feels like you’re in an 80s cartoon. Set in the year 3587, it’s got aliens, humans, and, of course, lots of robots. You play as the Awesomenauts, who are touted as the most powerful mercenaries in the whole universe. It’s a ragtag group, but when the goal is galactic conquest, you need the best of the best. While this game isn’t necessarily the best of the best, playing as the Awesomenauts can be a whole lot of fun. (more…)

Halo 4’s Infinity Multiplayer is said to be the “ultimate” multiplayer mode

In a final bit of Halo 4 news today, Microsoft has revealed the first details of the game’s “Infinity” multiplayer mode.

Halo 4’s multiplayer mode begins on the UNSC Infinity and tasks players with creating their own Spartan-IV supersoldier. From there, 343 Industries is giving those players the option of competing in your standard set of multiplayer matchtypes (call “War Games” here) or in a new episodic co-op campaign known as Spartan Ops (which can also be played solo).

Whichever mode you choose, the Infinity multiplayer system will include several improvements over previous Halo games:

Total Combat Freedom: Halo 4 features a vastly expanded suite of new multiplayer modes, weapons, vehicles, armor abilities, a new loadout and player progression system, and a new armor modification system that introduces gameplay-enhancing customizations for the first time in a Halo game.

Player Progression: The Halo 4 player progression system goes beyond simple aesthetic upgrades, encouraging players to invest time and effort to create a Spartan that looks and plays the way they want. Players can earn and activate combat enhancements called “Specializations” based on the style of play they engage in, from stealth to all-out assault, and everything in between.

Want to learn more about the Spartan Ops episodic campaign? Sure you do, because it sounds awesome. Hit the jump for more details on Spartan Ops and War Games. (more…)

Double dose of Serious Sam coming to Xbox Live Arcade this fall

Serious Sam will make the Xbox Live Arcade a very serious place this Fall with two new releases.

First up is Croteam’s Serious Sam 3: BFE, which will feature the fast-paced brutal action the first person shooter series is known for and take advantage of XBLA’s online capabilities.

A revamped Serious Sam Double D XXL, a 2D sidescroller starring Sam, is also on its way. It’ll feature new missions, weapons, enemies, and a campaign cooperative mode.

Nathan Fouts, founder and Lead Designer at Mommy’s Best Games, said that his team has taken all of criticism concerning the repetitive nature of the shooting and the lack of depth in the original Serious Sam Double D to heart, and have incorporated more gameplay variety in the XBLA version.

If you’re a Serious Sam fan, and you’d like to follow development updates and news for these games, you can check out the official Facebook page, or follow publisher Devolver Digital on Twitter.

THQ is looking to sell publishing rights to Devil’s Third

Tomonobu Itagaki made a name for himself many years ago at Tecmo’s Team Ninja by creating the Dead or Alive series. He was also responsible for resurrecting the Ninja Gaiden series and being an outspoken critic of the industry. Since leaving the developer in 2008, Itagaki has started Valhalla Game Studios with several former Team Ninja teammates, as well as begun work on Devil’s Third, which made a big splash at E3 2010.

THQ happily snapped up the publishing rights to Devil’s Third back then, but now the cash-strapped company is looking to unload the game due to development difficulties. According to THQ CEO Brian Farrell, the third-party developer who was creating the game engine for Valhalla Game Studios has closed down:

“Two ‘unforeseen’ events reduced Devil’s Third’s profitability. The company Valhalla was using for the engine went out of business, so we had to assist Itagaki-san and the team with a new engine. It took a fair amount of time and cost a fair amount of money. There has also been a substantial appreciation of the yen against the dollar.”

Who knows, maybe Itagaki’s next creation will end up at Tecmo Koei. Wouldn’t that be wild?

Darksiders II continues the apocalypse on August 14

THQ has used their quarterly financial report to give Darksiders II an August 14 release ate. Originally set for a June 26 release, the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game was pushed back two months to allow for more polishing.

“We look forward to launching Darksiders [II] beginning on August 14 in North America,” CEO Brian Farrell told investors. Let’s hope he’s equally looking forward to the release of the Wii U version, which will be a launch title for Nintendo’s next system.
