Earthquake sim I Am Alive rated by ESRB

Ubisoft’s I Am Alive struck a chord with E3-goers (OK, possibly just me) back in 2008 with an intense debut trailer that centered around a desperate hunt for a single bottle of water in a Chicago that’s been devestated by an earthquake. Flash forward three years later and besides an “It’s still in development, we swear!” teaser trailer released during E3 2010, I Am Alive has completely vanished from Ubisoft’s future game slate.
But last week the ESRB confirmed that the game may be closer to completion than we all assumed by assigning I Am Alive a Mature rating. The PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 game’s mature subject matter likely played a role in receiving the rating it did as well as the “Blood, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes and Strong Language” the ESRB found. The Rating Summary goes a step further and describes a very bleak landscape for the game’s main character:
This is an action game in which players assume the role of a man who must find his family in a post-apocalyptic world. From a third-person perspective, players traverse through city ruins and use a machete to kill human enemies in melee-style combat. Battles are accompanied by realistic gunfire, slashing sounds, and cries of pain; characters emit brief splashes of blood when hit.
Players have the ability to kill or knock unconscious wounded/vulnerable enemies via finishing moves (e.g., throat slashing, impaling, pistol-whipping); these scenes are highlighted by close-up camera angles and increased player control (e.g., on-screen prompts with button-press sequences).
During the course of the game, players encounter women who can be saved from nearby enemies; sexual mistreatment is sometimes implied in the dialogue (e.g., “These guys kept me as their pet, or mascot, or something.”). One sequence depicts the background silhouette of a man fondling and threatening a captured female survivor; the exchange includes phrases such as “Do you hear me? Don’t touch me!” and “Don’t be like that. You know I can make your life a lot easier if you would just cooperate.” The words “p*ssy,” “f**k,” and “sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.
Ubisoft has yet to comment publicly on I Am Alive’s new ESRB rating, but you can watch the game’s astonishing E3 2008 trailer after the break. (more…)

Conan shows off kinder, gentler Gears of War 3
Microsoft and Epic released the trilogy-capping Gears of War 3 earlier this week. But Conan O’Brien is here to let worried parents in on a big secret: it’s not as violent and vulgar as the first two titles in the series.
Watch as Delta Squad learns the true meaning of friendship as they get in touch with their feelings among the ruins of Sera. It’s beautiful man, just beautiful.

New Releases: FIFA 12, Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, X-Men Destiny, More

A soccer showdown highlights this week’s batch of new games as EA plans to release FIFA Soccer 12 on nearly every platform imaginable (3DS, PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox 360) while Konami brings Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
But the biggest new release this week has nothing to do with the beautiful game… well it is a collection of beautiful games, that’s for sure. I speak, of course, of The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection. Two of the greatest and most acclaimed games of all-time have been remastered in high definition and are now finally available on the PS3. Oh, and speaking of HD remakes, Ubisoft is bringing Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Trilogy to the PS3 as well.
Also available this week is Activision’s X-Men: Destiny (DS, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360) and the first Tetris game on the 3DS, Tetris: Axis.
Check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

Forza 4 revs up a demo, DLC Season Pass
Microsoft and developer Turn 10 turned the key on a ton of big announcements for Forza Motorsport 4 yesterday.
The biggest news is the announcement of the Forza 4 Season Pass. Priced at 2400 Microsoft Points ($30), the Pass will be downloadable on the Xbox Live Marketplace or available from retailers on October 11 (the same day Forza 4 ships to stores). Players purchasing a Pass will gain access to six downloadable content packs (containing 60 cars) that’ll be released between November 2011 and April 2012. Purchased individually, the packs will cost 3600 Microsoft Points ($45), so the Pass works out to a 30% discount.
Pass purchasers will also receive a bonus car pack after the game launches. “The American Muscle Car Pack” will feature ten classic cars including the 1965 Pontiac GTO, 1968 Pontiac Firebird and the 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock.
If you just can’t wait to take Forza Motorsport 4 for a test drive, Microsoft is planning to release a demo for Xbox Live Gold members on October 3. All other Xbox 360 owners will be able to download it on October 7.
Rounding the final turn, we’ve also learned that Turn 10 plans to offer a “Launch Pack” of five cars for gamers who purchase the Limited Collector’s Edition of Forza 4. The “Launch Pack” will include the 1965 Ford Mustang GT Coupe, the 2011 Koenigsegg Agera, the 1997 Lexus SC300, the 2011 RUF RGT-8 and the 2011 Tesla Roadster Sport.
Finally, Turn 10 has confirmed that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the legendary Indianapolis 500) will be included in Forza 4.

The Joker has the last laugh in the latest Batman: Arkham City trailer
Hugo Strange may be running Arkham City, but The Joker is still the biggest baddie of them all in the newest trailer for Batman: Arkham City. How serious is The Clown Prince of Crime? He actually considers killing Batman.
Batman: Arkham City will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 18 with the PC version arriving in November.

BloodRayne: Betrayal Review: Brutal Might Be a Better Subtitle

The plot behind the BloodRayne franchise is one of those ideas that is both stupidly brilliant and brilliantly stupid. I mean, a half-naked half-vampire kills Nazis in a fantastic display of polygonal plasma… what’s not to love? You may hate yourself in the morning, but you have to admit, that is an awesome premise for a game. It was this reaction from gamers (and a trio of less-than-stellar Uwe Boll films) that caused the series to go dormant back in 2004. But you can’t keep an undead half-vampire down and Rayne has returned in the 2D side-scroller BloodRayne: Betrayal. And yes, she draws plenty of pixelated plasma this time. Sadly, there aren’t any Nazis. (more…)

Daily Scoop: September 21, 2011 – Another Wednesday!
Mmmm Wednesday. Humpday. Another stepping stone on the path to the weekend. Thank you for being gentle! I am in need of a kind touch today…
Anyway, today’s Deal of the Day at Amazon in video games is, once again, a promotional credit deal with the Xbox 360. It’s for the 4 GB model with the Kinect, and the promotional credit is $50. Not too shabby!
Today’s Tee Fury is absolutely squee-worthy. It’s called “Miyamoto’s Angels,” and I’m sure it’s already sold a boatload: (more…)

Resident Evil 4 HD, Burnout Crash! added to XBLA
That headline sounds awfully familiar. And it should, as most of the games available in this week’s Xbox Live Marketplace were added to the PlayStation Store yesterday as well.
The big new release this week is Resident Evil 4, which is now available in HD for the first time. The high definition port will be part of the XBLM’s Games on Demand service, even though a matching retail release never materialized. It’ll be joined by downloadable versions of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II and MLB 2K11.
This week’s Xbox Live Arcade additions include the top-down racer Burnout Crash! and the arcade platformer Rotastic.
More information on both of these titles can be found at Xbox.com (Burnout Crash!, Rotastic).
