EA officially announces Syndicate reboot
After years of rumors and leaks (including one just this weekend), Electronic Arts has officially announced that Starbreeze (of Chronicles of Riddick fame) is working on a reboot of Syndicate.
Scheduled for an early 2012 release on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, the Syndicate reboot will eschew the real-time strategy nature of the 1993 original, opting instead for a sci-fi shooter feel. However, the new Syndicate will retain the cyberpunk aesthetic and corporate intrigue that featured heavily in the original game. This includes a four-player co-op mode made up of missions from that game and a storyline that should makes fans feel right at home:
Set in 2069, Syndicate takes players into a dark, Machiavellian world run without government oversight with many syndicates vying for total dominance of their local market place. With no one to question their intentions or actions, three mega corporations – Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari – are at the forefront of this brutal war for control of the pivotal American market.
In the world of Syndicate, everything is digitally connected, including the people. Players aren’t limited to the weapons in their hands. Through DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their head, players can slow down time and breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. Syndicate’s blend of fast-paced, futuristic, action shooter settings and story combined with innovative chip breach gameplay instantly immerses players in a unique digital world.
EA and Starbreeze have released an initial batch of screenshots of the new Syndicate, which you can view after the break. (more…)
New Releases: NHL 12, God of War: Origins, White Knight Chronicles II, More

Welcome to another week of new games! This week EA Sports is lacing up their hockey skates, Kratos is coming at you in 3D and D3 Publisher has bundled together two RPGs for twice the fun. Also, the Bit.Trip series is getting collected in two separate compilations and the insane geniuses at Twisted Pixel are putting out a game starring an undead marionette bent on revenge.
- The ice skates belong to this year’s only hockey sim, NHL 12 (PS3, Xbox 360).
- Kratos will go 3D thanks to the stereoscopic 3D mode found in God of War: Origins Collection, a PS3 remake of his two PSP adventures.
- D3’s double RPG is White Knight Chronicles II, which also includes a free copy of the first White Knight Chronicles game.
- The Bit.Trip series will be coming to the 3DS as Bit.Trip Saga and the Wii as Bit.Trip Complete.
- Finally, Twisted Pixel’s The Gunstringer proves once again that the developers are a happily demented bunch.
Check out the full list of the rest of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

Check out the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S in Need For Speed: The Run
If you’re hard up for some Porsche action, the Limited Edition versions of Need For Speed: The Run will give you access to the 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S. The game will feature an “illicit, coast-to-coast race from San Francisco to New York”, according to its website. With 500 horsepower and 800 lbs of torque, not to mention those sexy contours, you’ll be tearing up the country’s virtual asphalt in style. It’s probably the next best thing to owning the actual car. And at $49.99 for PC and $59.99 for PS3 and Xbox 360, a copy of Need for Speed: The Run is slightly more affordable.
The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S will be exclusive to the Need For Speed: The Run “Limited Edition,” which is actually the only version of the game available on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, so pre-order now (or not) and live out your Porsche dreams on November 15, 2011.

Crysis coming to PSN, XBLA in October
Even though it was released in 2007, the question “Can it run Crysis?” is still one of the best benchmarks for PC performance. So it was thought the game would never come to consoles. But developer Crytek had other ideas and they’ve revealed that “a modified and enhanced version” of Crysis will be available to download from the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this October.
Priced at $19.99 (1600 Microsoft Points), the console version Crysis has been remastered using the company’s new CryEngine 3 framework. With a new engine comes all-new lighting effects, all-new graphical effects, optimized Nanosuit controls, sterescopic 3D support and just as many alien invaders as before.
“We are extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish with Crysis. We set out to create a next-generation FPS and delivered a PC experience that became a benchmark for quality — and still is for many gamers even four years later,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek. “By bringing the single-player campaign to console, we believe we are again setting a new standard for quality in downloadable gaming.”
The word “modified” is a little scary, but this announcement is welcome news for console gamers who always wanted to try their hand at Crysis.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution grafts onto #1 spot in August NPDs
I know what you’re thinking… what about Madden? Well, for some strange reason, The NPD Group’s tracking team considers August 30 a part of the September report. Perhaps they’ve taken a few too many hits to the head (BOOM!). But whatever the reason, So Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the bestselling game in August.
Deus Ex may have won, but the industry as a whole lost. A 23 percent drop from August 2011 meant that sales were way down across the board. The lack of a new Madden game in August actually explains that drop pretty well though. Only Nintendo’s repriced 3DS system, which sold 185,000 consoles from August 12 to the end of the period, could be considered a success. Sony’s price cut for the PS3 also increased sales of the HD console.
You can check out the complete top ten for August 2011 right here:
1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
2. NCAA Football 12 (Xbox 360, PS3)
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops (Xbox 360, PS3, DS, Wii, PC)
4. Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (DS, Wii, PS3)
5. Cars 2 (DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
6. Just Dance: Summer Party (Wii)
7. Just Dance 2 (Wii)
8. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean (Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PS3, 3DS, PSP, PC)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)
10. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)
Dark Souls’ “Prologue: Part 3” trailer is the most metal thing you’ll see all week
Namco Bandai continues to stream out the Dark Souls prologue trailers with part three. Now, we get to see the giant, boney monster-thingy named Nit staring at the fire in his hands despite lacking eyeballs. If there’s one hope I have for the game, it’s that every hit on Nit will count as a headshot since his torso is made of skulls. We then see him “unleashing a miasma of death and disease” before cutting to a company of knights throwing lightning bolts at dragons.
If Namco Bandai would allow it, I’d like to form a metal band and use these images for an album cover. Dark Souls is set for a US release on October 4, 2011.
And in case you missed them, don’t forget to check out Prologue: Part 1 and Prologue: Part 2.
