Toy Soldiers: Cold War Review: You Want a War? You Got a War!

Seattle-based Signal Studios delighted gamers last year with their debut title Toy Soldiers, a tower defense game that oozed style as you fulfilled your childhood fantasies of blowing the crap out of little plastic soldiers and tanks. Now they’re back with a sequel, which moves the conflict from World War I to the good ol’ days of the Cold War – because, well, who doesn’t enjoy blasting commie toys to smithereens? (more…)

Batman adds 3D support for Arkham City to his utility belt
The addition of anaglyphic 3D support was one of the major selling points for the Game of the Year Edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Batman: Arkham City will go one better and include both stereoscopic 3D support (for those with 3DTVs) and anaglyphic 3D support (for those who don’t mind the red and blue paper glasses).
Here’s what WB Games had to say about Bruce Wayne’s latest high-tech toy:
Gamers on Xbox 360 and PS3 can delve deep into Arkham City’s breathtaking environments and immersive gameplay in stereoscopic 3D when playing on any 3D HDTV and wearing active shutter glasses that are compatible with the television. In addition, Batman: Arkham City supports NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, allowing PC players to also experience the action in stereoscopic 3D on GeForce GPU-equipped desktop or notebook PCs and compatible 3DTVs.
Fans with HDTVs can enjoy Batman: Arkham City in anaglyphic 3D with technology compatible with all high definition TV sets and visible to players wearing 3D glasses available for the video game.
Batman: Arkham City will Bam! Pow! Zap! its way into stores on October 18 release.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor to ditch gigantic controller, uses Xbox 360 controller + Kinect
Remember this monster of a controller from the original Steel Battalion game for the Xbox? Well, no more! Capcom recently announced that A) they’re no longer trying to invade your house’s living room space with another similar controller, and B) that the new control scheme for Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor will feature simultaneous use of the Xbox 360 controller and Kinect.
It’s unsure whether this new control method will be easier than the enormous control panel linked above, but Capcom has said that the Kinect will play a large role in the game – from high fiving your crew members to operating a turret gun. The bottom line seems to be that Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor might just be the game that will make you look the most idiotic when playing by yourself.
Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360 in 2012.

Ninja Gaiden III pins down PlayStation Move functionality
I always love video game conferences because of all the new developments being announced; this week, Tecmo and Koei announced that the Playstation Move controller will be an added full functionality to the upcoming brutally-slashing sequel, Ninja Gaiden III.
The statement also notes that the Move functionality will “give players a new edge when slicing through their enemy’s flesh and bone.” Sounds interesting! It is Ninja Gaiden, after all. It simply wouldn’t be without the mention of tearing apart enemies. The Move should be a welcomed addition, but I’m curious to see how much more frustration this will add to the already-difficult series.

XBLA Today: Toy Soldiers: Cold War

The conclusion of the Summer of Arcade takes a trip back to the 80s with Signal Studios’ Toy Soldiers: Cold War. For 1200 Microsoft Points ($15), players will swap out the plastic army men of the first game for some G.I. Joe-inspired action figures that carry machine guns and chomp cigars whilst battling Reds. Yes, its the USA versus the Commies in Toy Soldiers: Cold War and only your tower defense skills (and a Rambo knockoff) can protect democracy around the globe.
We’ll have a review of Toy Soldiers: Cold War later today.
