Duke Nukem conquers comic books this July

Do you really need to drop a deuce and you’re all out of reading material? Well, Duke Nukem is coming to the rescue (even if you’re not a hot babe).

The star of Duke Nukem Forever will headline IDW Publishing’s newest comic book series, Duke Nukem: Glorious Bastard, starting in July. The series will be written by Tom Waltz (The A-Team: Shotgun Wedding) and IDW promises it’ll include “all the game’s trademark humor and over-the-top violence.”

It’s currently unknown if feces flinging will make it into the comic book as a representation of the game’s “trademark humor.”

L.A. Noire is mature – no, we mean REALLY mature

We all knew L.A. Noire was going to be gritty, but I didn’t realize just how gritty Rockstar was going to get. Cole Phelps, the detective searching for a serial killer, is going to have a lot to deal with as he goes up through the ranks at the police station. According to the ESRB rating information, this is what you have to look forward to:

  • Realistic shootouts, which are “highlighted by gunfire, cries of pain, and blood spirts that stain injured characters and the surrounding environments”
  • Violent cutscenes, including one with “a character being beaten with a crowbar (off screen)—large spurts of blood are depicted in the foreground”
  • Some crime scenes in which you investigate “badly beaten or mutilated corpses” and you have the ability to “examine victims’ bodies close-up, surveying various bruises and bloody cuts for evidence—a few female corpses are depicted fully nude with fleeting images of pubic hair”
  • Investigations involving sexual assaults, in which “details are often conveyed in clinical terms through dialogue or on-screen text (e.g., ‘He’s some kind of sex fiend,’ ‘Woman’s briefs torn at seams, forcibly removed,’ and ‘Head trauma . . . external bruising to genitals.’)”
  • And, perhaps the strangest of the lot: “In one cutscene, there is an implication that a character is engaged in a sexual relationship with a teenager (e.g., ‘You take love where you can find it as you get older, Jack’/That has nothing to do with love . . .’)”

Damn. This is going to make Heavy Rain look like Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Oh, there are also scenes with drugs, and, um, “Language such as ‘f**k,’ ‘sh*t,’ ‘c*nt,’ ‘n**ger,’ and ‘sp*c’ can be heard in the dialogue.” If your stomach is strong enough for you to listen to the Warp Zoned podcast, then you should be safe.

L.A. Noire hits stores on May 17th for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Get your sleuthing skills ready.

Pokemon Black/White dominate sales chart

The NPD Group has revealed the list of bestselling games for March and the latest Pokemon game, Pokemon Black/White, has caught the top of the chart.

Pokemon White Version came out on top with Pokemon Black Version just behind it in the number two slot. According to Nintendo, both games combined to sell nearly 2.5 million copies (over 1.3 million for White and another 1.1 million for Black).

New releases were well represented among last months bestsellers with Homefront (#3) and Dragon Age II (#4) both taking up residence in the top five. The bottom half of the top ten was also almost completely made up of new releases including Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (#6), Crysis 2 (#7), MLB 11: The Show (#9) and Fight Night Champion (#10).

Hit the jump for a complete look at the NPD Group’s top ten for March. (more…)

NetherRealm shows off Mortal Kombat’s King of the Hill mode

NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat is only five days away, but the studio is still showing off the game’s many, many modes. King of the Hill mode is the developer’s attempt to replicate the Mortal Kombat arcade experience through the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. There’s an “I got next” line, a spectator mode with a cheering (or jeering) crowd and, according to NetherRealm, some surprises.

Awesome! And it won’t be long now, Mortal Kombat will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 next week.

SSX to come down the mountain in January

Electronic Arts held a press event a few days ago where they revealed a little bit more about SSX. Most of the presentation should be familar to anyone who read the SSX team’s interview with Game Informer last week. But Creative Director Todd Batty did reveal one new bit of info about SSX: it’ll be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in January 2012.

Batty also confirmed that SSX will be playable at this year’s E3 Expo and that the game will feature “spontaneous avalanches,” which will no doubt make the descent down the mountain even deadlier.

I haven’t played an SSX game in ten years and this already sounds too awesome for words.

Logos for Sonic Generations and next Mario & Sonic may have leaked

It’s nothing confirmed, but the Sonic Stadium forums have stumbled upon images for the anticipated multi-generational Sonic Generations as well as Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. You can see the pic of the latter after the break.

I know it probably wouldn’t be the final box art, but I kind of like that image of the two Sonics with just a white background. It would be pleasantly simplistic and non-pretentious, and possibly get me more excited for the game (if that’s at all a legitimate reason). Sonic Generations will be coming out this year for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, while little information at all (technically, it hasn’t even been announced yet) is known about the next Olympic mash up of the Mushroom Kingdom and… the Zones. Yar’s Revenge, Might & Magic on XBLA today

Pick your poison in today’s Xbox Live Arcade update: a futuristic shooter or an RPG puzzler set in olden times.

Yar’s Revenge is a new version of the classic Atari 2600 shooter that reimagines Yar as a teenage girl in power armor. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is another reimagining of a classic game, albeit one originally released for the DS in 2009. The XBLA version includes high definition graphics and a brand new 2 vs 2 co-op mode.

Yar’s Revenge can be downloaded for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) while Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes has been priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

More information on both games can be found after the break. (more…)
