Daily Scoop: March 5, 2013 – A quiet day

It’s been a quiet day for gaming today. Well, it’s been a quiet day for deals, and hardly any t-shirts. But it’s been a great day for gamers, especially those of us going to PAX East! They’ve announced the schedule, which includes a ludicrous amount of stuff I want to attend. I especially want to go pitch some ideas to the Cards Against Humanity guys – who will take the best answers and put them in the game. Woo!

Other than that, there’s really not a lot going on. Well, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is 50% off at $19.99, and I’m trying to find a reason NOT to buy Bit.Trip Complete for $10.76 (aieeee!), but other than that, it’s pretty quiet out there.

Just one t-shirt today, and it’s a repeat:

Halo 4: Castle Map Pack will be playable at PAX East

halo4-header

With 17 days to go before the opening of this year’s PAX East show, the panel schedule has finally been released. This year, in addition to the usual appearances by the team at Rooster Teeth, a smattering of nerdcore artists, and the Dungeons & Dragons developers, the head honchos of 343 Industries will be on hand to talk about the future of Halo 4. Oh, and they’re bringing a playable version of the final map pack, the Castle Map Pack, with them:

Halo 4 Multiplayer: Past, Present, and Future
Friday, March 22 5 PM – 6 PM
Main Theater

Halo 4 delivered a unique set of multiplayer experiences, immersing players in an episodic campaign with Spartan Ops, while delivering more breadth and depth in the expanded War Games sandbox. You’ve played the Majestic Map Pack and may even have had a chance to play Castle Map Pack on the floor here at PAX. Come prepared to hear 343 Industries’ Frank O’Connor, Kevin Franklin, Dan Ayoub and David Ellis, as well as Certain Affinity’s Tom Potter discuss where we’ve been, where we are, and what is on the horizon for Halo 4 Multiplayer.

The Castle Map Pack is expected to be released sometime in April, so a March preview (PAX East runs from Friday, March 22 through Sunday, March 24) is a nice surprise. And you never know what other surprises the guys from 343, and map pack developer Certain Affinity, will have for the crowd.

Thief 4 confirmed for PC, PS4, other next-generation consoles

Thief 4 is dead… but say hello to Thief. Game Informer has revealed that the rebranded reboot of the stealth series will grace the cover of its April 2013 issue. The magazine also confirmed the Eidos Montreal-developed game will be released for the PC, PS4, and “other next-generation platforms” (such as the unannounced Xbox 720) in 2014.

Our April cover story is a world-exclusive look at this next-generation stealth title. Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer. Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron. In order to survive his adventures, Garrett will have to pay attention to his environment and make use of the many possible paths through each of the game’s levels.

We’ll have to ask Square Enix to be sure, but it sounds like the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Thief 4 have gone up in smoke.

Rumor: Sixth Resident Evil movie opening on September 12, 2014

residentevilmovie-header

ShockTillYouDrop.com is reporting that Sony/Screen Gems and director Paul W.S. Anderson are preparing to unleash a sixth (and presumably final) Resident Evil film on the moviegoing public on September 12, 2014. Considering the cliffhanger that Resident Evil: Retribution ended on, I can’t say this is too surprising.

It’s unknown if Anderson will direct the currently untitled Resident Evil 6 or if he’ll hand it off to someone else (which he did for Extinction and Afterlife). As this is still in the rumor stage, Milla Jovovich also has yet to officially sign up, but I can’t imagine a Resident Evil movie without Alice.

Curt Schilling asks judge to throw out 38 Studios lawsuit

38studios-logoCurt Schilling, the former Boston Red Sox pitcher and founder of the now-defunct 38 Studios (and a future Hall of Famer, in my humble opinion), asked a judge yesterday to throw out a $75 million lawsuit against him. The lawsuit, filed by the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, alleges that 38 Studio executives misled the agency in securing the taxpayer-gurranted loan. Schillings calls these allegations “implausible.”

On Friday, lawyers for Schilling filed documents asking Superior Judge Michael Silverstein to throw out the suit, which alleges fraud, racketeering and conspiracy. According to Schilling’s claim, he and the other executives “have repeatedly disclosed the company’s financial needs to [Rhode Island] Economic Development Corporation officials.”

“Given the EDC’s admissions concerning 38 Studios’ disclosures to the EDC’s executives, attorneys and financial advisor, it is impossible for the EDC simultaneously to claim that the 38 Studios defendants supposedly defrauded the EDC,” the filing says.

This news comes on the heels of the sale of Schilling’s famous “bloody sock,” which was auctioned off for $92,612.50 by Heritage Auctions last month to raise money to pay off the pitcher’s debts. 38 Studios was the creator of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and was developing Project Copernicus, an unreleased MMO set in the Amalur unviverse, at the time of its bankruptcy.

Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote begins with Jerry Rice vs. Chris Carter

maddennfl25-covervote

The Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote officially begins next Monday (March 11), but EA Sports and ESPN’s SportsNation launched the vote-by-Twitter play-in round today. The first matchup is Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice versus newly-minted Hall of Fame wide receiver Chris Carter. You can make your selection by tweeting a message of support to Rice (with the hashtag #Madden25Rice) or Carter (with the hashtag #Madden25Carter) now:

This year’s Madden Cover Vote will include 32 current players versus 32 all-time greats with one of each facing off in the final round. While no one’s seen the final bracket yet, I have to ask, how was Jerry Rice not an automatic pick? The man wasn’t just a great wide receiver, he was the greatest wide receiver.

Of course, Carter is an ESPN analyst (and one of Chris Berman’s favorite players), so I suppose that explains Carter’s challenge of Mr. 80.

Daily Scoop: March 4, 2013 – Send cookies

I was so busy this weekend it was unbelievable. I’ve been doing nothing but working on school work and playing RPGs. I set myself a time limit, work on school work until I hit that limit, and then play an RPG for an hour or two (ok, or five, in the case of Dungeons & Dragons on Saturday night – but I did work during that!). As a result, I’m getting a lot of work done, while also logging a lot of hours in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. If you want to hang out, you’ll have to wait until Friday (my birthday!). And even then, I might try to open up a menu, or summon a familiar, or try to restock my spells or something. It’s because I’ve been spending all my non-academic time with Chrom and Oliver. Don’t take it personally!

Some random deals going on at Amazon today – Assassin’s Creed III is $35.99 as part of their featured deals, and in their clearance deals, you can get Deus Ex Human Revolution – Augmented Edition for $44.41 on PlayStation 3, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition is $35.58 for Xbox 360. Scoop ’em up!

Three video game-related t-shirts up today, plus an added bonus!
