Standalone version of DayZ announced

DayZ, the popular zombie mod for the game ArmA II: Combined Ops, is going to be made into a standalone game, according to creator Dean Hall. Bohemia Interactive will be developing the game, with Hall as the project lead. More details will be forthcoming at the game’s new site.

This is a dream come true for Hall, whose creativity stemmed from his experience as a soldier in the New Zealand Army. It’s incredible that the developer of the original game has not only recognized how successful Hall has been, but is also supporting him and his project. It’s a proud day to be a gamer!

Get your first look at Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer in this trailer

I try not to get hyped on Call of Duty games. I try really hard. The only one I’ve ever been obsessed over was Call of Duty: Black Ops. And now, Call of Duty: Black Ops II is tempting me with this amazing multiplayer trailer. I mean, the first temptation was hearing about the Nuketown 2025 bonus map that comes with pre-orders. But now that I’m seeing these awesome stun grenades… drones… kamikaze mini-planes… I mean, really, what isn’t there to love here? Treyarch is pulling out all the stops.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be out on November 13 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Daily Scoop: August 7, 2012 – Board game night

Tuesday is upon us, which means tonight, we’ll be playing board games at Redcap’s Corner! I’m excited to play Scrumbrawl again, which is sort of like a fast-paced version of Blood Bowl. I also want to get in some Carcassonne time, and maybe some Pandemic. And did I mention my friend, Jason Tagmire, designed the new expansion for Quarriors? There’s a lot of board game awesomeness going around right now.

What’s going on in the deals department, you ask? Sadly, very little. Amazon’s digital deal of the week is the free-to-play War Inc. Battle Zone, for which they have some Amazon-exclusive starter packs. War Inc. Battle Zone is an “online multiplayer, session-based shooter game, where players can compete with friends and other players in real time, action packed team vs. team ground combat.” The packs are loaded with in-game items, including gold credits, armor, and elite weaponry.

More importantly, here are today’s game-related t-shirts!

Aliens: Colonial Marines Dev Diary #2: Xenos vs Marines

This developer diary for Aliens: Colonial Marines has it all. Xenomorphs? Check. Hot gameplay action? Check. Randy Pitchford? Double check. It’s also got awesome quotes like “There’s no negotiating with this thing. It’s going to kill you.”

Pitchford, Gearbox’s CEO and President, is joined by Producer Brian Burleson, Senior Design Director John Mulkey, and Writer Mikey Neumann in this episode. They talk about how scary these aliens are, how much influence they took from the films, and what their favorite weapons are in the game. But really, you should just watch the video.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be out on February 12, 2013 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

THQ begins work on four unannounced projects

Amidst all the doom and gloom of yesterday’s quarterly financial presentation, THQ President Jason Rubin announced that the company has started production on four new games in the last two months, spread out across its internal development studios. These will all be “triple A” titles, and will likely be released for the next generation of consoles, and, of course, the PC.

Rubin said, “THQ has talented studios, strong intellectual property, and is now nimble enough to navigate the complexities and take advantage of a marketplace in transition. Beyond our announced titles, in the last 60 days all four of our internal studios began working on new titles that represent the type of product that we believe will make THQ successful in the future.”

This announcement came about during the same presentation where Rubin announced that THQ canceled development on Insane, the first game in the Guillermo Del Toro horror trilogy.

So what games are they working on? Well, they’re unannounced, but hopefully they’ve already started turning Saints Row: The Third – Enter the Dominatrix into Saints Row 4.

First details on Rambo: The Video Game

The character of John Rambo, adapted from David Morell’s novel First Blood and immortalised on the silver screen by Sylvester Stallone in numerous outings, has long been absent from video games. Despite a string of early releases on the NES and Sega Genesis, as well as the old home computer systems such as the Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, and Commadore 64, the character has never reconnected with consoles. Even when the last film, simply titled Rambo, was released in 2008, its only accompaniment was Rambo Arcade, a light gun game from Sega.

Until now.

As Sly prepares to unleash The Expendables 2 on the world, Reef Entertainment has announced the first details for Rambo: The Video Game, which is currently in development by Polish outfit Teyon. The game will be based on the first three film entries: First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III. The “first person shooter with a fixed perspective” will see the one-man-army enter bloody shootouts, conduct stealth kills or generally cause destructive mayhem. Craig Lewis, Commercial Director for Reef Entertainment, sought to reassure fans of the cult classic that they would do it justice:

“For Rambo: The Video Game we are concentrating on authenticity to the films, variety of action and explosive gameplay sequences. By matching classic fixed-perspective play to a contemporary game engine we believe we can deliver a game that matches the pace and action set-piece diversity of the films.”

No release date has been given, but more information about the title, coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will be released during Gamescom in Cologne later this month.
