Minecraft creator offers to fund Psychonauts 2

Markus “notch” Persson wants to change the video game industry. His first creation, Minecraft, became a worldwide sensation while in beta. It’s since won a truckload of awards and made notch a very rich man.

So what’s he going to do with all the money? For starters, he’s going to offer some of it to Double Fine developer Tim Schafer to make Psychonauts 2. Here’s what notch posted on Twitter this morning:

@TimOfLegend Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen.

Psychonauts, a platformer set at a Summer camp for kids with telekinesis, was released in 2005 to rave reviews. However, it sold horribly and any plans for a sequel (the game ended on a cliffhanger) have been on hold ever since.

Is notch serious? (He says he is in another tweet.) Will Schafer take him up on it? (He’s said in the past that he wants to do a Psychonauts sequel.) Hopefully we’ll find out soon. Maybe even on Twitter.

The Simpsons Arcade Game Review: D’oh That To Me One More Time

It has been a little more than two decades since The Simpsons Arcade Game debuted in arcades and threatened to siphon the quarters out of our pockets. Konami graced us with a fun beat ’em up starring one of television’s most beloved dysfunctional families back then and now it’s finally available to play on our consoles. Is nostalgia enough to grant the game some staying power or do we have to make it write “I will not be a sucky game” over and over on the blackboard?

Daily Scoop: February 6, 2012 – Deals, deals, deals

Wow! This weekend was full of lots of fun gaming – of every kind. I played some Silent Hill and Chrono Trigger, some 4e Dungeons & Dragons, and topped it all off with some Pandemic. A little something for every kind of gamer in me…

Amazon’s got about a billion deals going on today. First, their Deal of the Day is a lightning deal, and it says: “The limited edition bundle of this popular strategy RPG is a true collector’s item for the Sony PS3!” I’m hoping it’s a deal on the Final Fantasy XIII-2, but I’m not going to hold my breath. It’ll go off at 5 PM EST.

Amazon’s also got Aksys’ Fate/Extra LE for $29.99 on the PSP, as well as the following PC downloads by Kalypso Media:

  • Dungeons for $7.49
  • Dungeons: Map Pack – DLC for $0.75
  • Dungeons – Into the Dark – DLC Pack 1 for $0.99
  • Dungeons: The Dark Lord for $7.49
  • Tropico Trilogy for $7.99
  • Airline Tycoon 2 for $11.99
  • Disciples III – Resurrection for $7.49

On top of that, they’ve also got all new weekly deals going on as well. They’ve got special deals on Cabela’s games; a buy one, get one deal on select Sims 3 games; and 25% off Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. They’re also offering a deal on select Disney games – if you buy buy Lego Pirates of the Caribbean, you get 50% off a Disney game on that list. And don’t forget there’s still a deal going for $50 off the Xbox 360 250GB Holiday Value Bundle with Kinect, and if you’re still behind on your Call of Duty games, you can get the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops for $14.99 used in the warehouse.

No video game shirts today, but it’s ladies-only week on TeeFury (they’re calling it “She-Fury!”) and today’s shirt is pretty awesome:

PSM3 teases “A Mystery Shooter Sequel”

UK gaming mag PSM3 is promising a big reveal in its March 2012 issue.

The image to your right appears on the “Next Issue” page of the current issue of PSM3. Two bullets appear alongside the words “A Mystery Shooter Sequel” and “An exclusive look at one of 2012’s hottest shooters.” We’re likely looking at a game with a two in the title and, obviously, one that’s being released this year.

Sister publication CVG has helpfully suggested that the game could be Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 or Bulletstorm 2, so I think it’s safe to dismiss both of those options. However, I think an EA-published title is the most likely candidate.

Since it’s release in 2010, EA has continually laid the groundwork for Medal of Honor 2, even going so far as to include a teaser with copies of Battlefield 3. I’d be very surprised if this reveal is referring to anything else.

However, if you’re interested in longshots, what about Black 2? EA executives have always said they’d like to make a sequel someday and the game did rely heavily on the bullet motif. Just look at the cover.

But we’ll find out for sure on March 6.

It’s a Zapper… that transforms into Megatron… made out of Legos

While I’m not sure what I would have given to obtain this transforming Zapper made out of Legos when I was eight, at the very least I certainly would have entertained an offer for my soul from Old Scratch.

And it’s a good thing too, as Lego maestro Baron von Brunk has just completed such a mashup, which he’s dubbed Plasmashock. Based on Megatron’s pistol design from the Transformers Generation 1 toy line, it is everything my eight-year old self imagined… and more (because it’s built out of Legos).

For the Baron’s next trick, he plans to large replica of a Nintendo Entertainment System that transforms into a giant robot like Metroplex or Fortress Maximus. An 80s-style “We’re not worthy!” has never been more appropriate.

Madden Simulation was right! Giants win Super Bowl XLVI

The Madden NFL 12 Super Bowl XLVI simulation has proven to be quite prophetic as the New York Giants have defeated the New England Patriots in a thrilling 21-17 win.

EA’s Super Simulation listed the Giants as a 27-24 victor thanks to a last minute field goal. And while it didn’t play out exactly like that, several of EA’s predictions did come true including touchdowns from Victor Cruz and Ahmad Bradshaw. Eli Manning was named the Super Bowl MVP, also just like in the simulation.

After fumbling last year’s Super Bowl winner, this is a welcome return to form for EA’s simulation. In the last nine years, the Madden series has predicted the winner seven times. I guess after picking New England in the first Patriots-Giants Super Bowl (which the Giants also won), the Madden simulation engine learned its lesson.

First screenshots, details of The Last of Us in Game Informer

Game Informer plans to extensively preview Naughty Dog’s PS3-exclusive The Last of Us all month long. While they’ve yet to answer to big question of whether those crazed dudes in the trailer are zombies or merely “infected,” the magazine did let us in on some of Naughty Dog’s secrets.

The Last of Us will take place in Pittsburgh, but not the Pittsburgh we know. Massive vegetation and urban decay have spread throughout the city in addition to the zombies/infected. Battling the crazed citizens of Pittsburgh will require players to use both melee attacks and guns. But like everything in the now ruined world, weapons will break and new ones will have to be found to replace them.

Finally, players will control Joel and not his teenage partner, Ellie. But Naughty Dog was quick to point out that the game is “not one long escort mission” with Game Informer adding “she always managed to keep up, yet stay out of the way.”

But enough chatter, check out these absolutely gorgeous (and in-game) screenshots at Game Informer.
