Halo 4 Narrative Designer leaves 343 Industries

Ryan Payton, Narrative Designer on Halo 4, left 343 Industries, according to Kotaku. Payton – formerly of Kojima Productions, where he worked on Metal Gear Solid 4 – was diagnosed with severe depression a few months ago. “I had a great run at Microsoft,” Payton said. “I don’t regret one day of it. But after a few years, there came a point where I wasn’t creatively excited about the project anymore… The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don’t think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through.”

The split is amicable – Payton has said that he doesn’t think Halo 4 is a bad game, and 343 Industries wishes him the best of luck in his new endeavors. What are those new endeavors? He wanted to start up his own game studio and do something less constraining than work on triple A titles, and so he has started up his own studio, Camouflaj. Two new titles are already in development. Payton said, “I think time is the most valuable thing we have, and I’ve decided that I’m not going to waste one more day working on something that doesn’t speak to my values.”

Payton has been replaced by Armando Troisi, Lead Cinematic Designer on Mass Effect 2, as the Halo 4 Narrative Director. I have to say that what Payton did took a lot of courage, and I look forward to seeing what kind of games he can create in this new atmosphere.

ESRB pulls a great trick by outing Devil May Cry trilogy for PS3, Xbox 360

Are you in tears over Capcom’s steadfast refusal to admit a Devil May Cry HD Collection exists? Well quit yer crying because new ratings on the ESRB website have revealed that Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 and Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in the near future. Because each game is listed individually, Capcom is likely planning to release each HD remake separately like the upcoming Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica remakes.

But we can’t say anything for sure until Capcom officially announces the Devil May Cry remakes for the PS3 and Xbox 360. I mean, what are they waiting for? Satan got their tongue?

BloodRayne: Betrayal added to PlayStation Store

Sony’s PSN Play promotion continues with the addition of BloodRayne: Betrayal to the PlayStation Store. Everyone’s second favorite half-vampire (OK, dhampir), Rayne, returns in a 2D side-scrolling adventure that stirs up some awfully strong memories of Castlevania. It’s available to download for $14.99.

Joining BloodRayne on the new release list is Rugby World Cup 2011 ($49.99), a sports sim centered on the Rugby World Cup; and Skydrift ($14.99), which promises to “get [you] closer than ever before to the world of adrenaline pumping sky-racing.” Also available this week is a PSone Import version of Mega Man 4.

These new releases are pretty neat, but the real winners this week are PSN Plus subscribers, who will be able to download Plants vs. Zombies, Astro Tripper, Altered Beast and the PSone Classic Jet Moto for free.

Head over to the PlayStation.Blog for a complete look at all of this week’s new releases and game add-ons.

Sega sets an October 12 release date for Guardian Heroes

Radiant Silvergun isn’t the only one of Treasure’s treasures that’ll be arriving on the Xbox Live Arcade soon. Sega has announced that Guardian Heroes, the developer’s awesome beat ’em up (originally released for the Saturn) will be available to download from the XBLA on October 12.

Priced at 800 Microsoft Points ($10), Sega promises that Guardian Heroes “isn’t just about beating up bad guys, with a storyline full of twists and turns players will enjoy one of five completely unique boss fights, as well as more than half a dozen possible endings.”

To prove it, they’ve released a new gameplay trailer, which you can see above.

Daily Scoop: September 6, 2011 – Rainy Tuesday

It’s a rainy Tuesday here in Philadelphia. After a long day spent playing board games, writing, and watching people play Warhammer, it’s nice to lounge around and do nothing… but write, that is!

Today’s Deal of the Day in video games is Disney’s Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales for the Wii. It’s just $14.99, and boasts both cooperative and competitive play for up to four players. But the real question is: does it have Bruce Campbell?

Today’s gaming apparel is brought to you by High Score Society, and features several well-known video game characters rendered in 16 bits:

Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition Review: Fighting Like It’s 1999

If you are a casual fan of fighting games, it would be understandable if you saw the jump from Street Fighter II to Street Fighter IV as a little confusing. After all, while Street Fighter II is considered one of gaming’s most important jewels, Street Fighter III seemed to be something of a ghost. Releasing after the peak of fighting game mania, SFIII only saw a console release on Sega’s ill-fated Dreamcast, severely limiting the audience compared to, say, the PlayStation or the PlayStation 2. However, thanks to Xbox Live Arcade, Street Fighter III is getting a chance to appeal to a brand new audience. Dubbed Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, this release is designed to finally bridge the SFII and SFIV gap for the people who barely knew the third game existed.

See the Dragon Quest X debut trailer and two gameplay videos

UPDATE: The trailer has been pulled from YouTube by Square Enix.

I’m still reeling from last night’s reveal that Dragon Quest X will be an “online RPG” for the Wii and Wii U. Up is down! Black is white! Cats and dogs… you get the idea.

But for those of you who missed the live stream, some enterprising YouTubers have uploaded the game’s debut trailer and a pair of gameplay demos. You can check out the trailer above and the gameplay videos after the break, but hurry, Square Enix doesn’t like it when their trailers appear on YouTube unless they put them there.

Daily Scoop: September 5, 2011 – Day of Laborin’

So, it’s an American holiday, which means I’m awake and doing laundry. Something about that doesn’t seem quite right, but hey – sometimes you just gotta wash the towels, if you know what I’m sayin’! It’s made better by this amazing Zelda Reorchestrated website Ryan Littlefield found. Zomg.

Amazon doesn’t have any daily deals today, but they do have their new weekly deals up:

Ript‘s “See Transylvania First” is severely testing my willpower right now:
