Call of Duty “action-adventure” game officially canceled

We’ve been expecting the hammer to fall since the beginning of the year, but the team at Sledgehammer Games has finally revealed the fate of the Call of Duty “action-adventure” game: it’s been canceled.

Speaking to GameSpot, Sledgehammer co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield said their team put about six months worth of work into the game before Activision pulled the plug. And, as we all know, after that plug hit the ground, Sledgehammer was invited to help Infinity Ward put the finising touches on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

“We had a prototype together that was pretty compelling, and it looked really good,” Condrey said. “[But], the opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with Infinity Ward, that’s demonstrated that they know how to do exceptional software, was just an opportunity we couldn’t [pass up].”

Activision has never been one to pass up a big payday, so presumably they’ll revisit the Call of Duty spinoff idea someday.

First Aliens: Colonial Marines trailer nukes us from orbit

Acid Blood? Check.
Power Loaders? Check.
Moonmen All Over the Place? Check.
Something Getting Nuked From Orbit? Check!

Yup, it’s an Aliens game all right. It may be hard to believe, but this is the first full-length trailer for Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines. The long-in-development shooter is finally nearing completion (it’s currently scheduled for a Spring 2012 release) and it’s looking as sharp as a knife flying between Bishop’s fingers.

All we need now is for someone to scream “Game over, man! Game over!”

Namco Bandai has released the second part of the prologue to Dark Souls and it’s just as creepifying as part one. I mean, it’s a skeleton, but it’s not a skeleton! This dark tale will be continued with a third part soon.

Dark Souls will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 4.

Dungeon Siege III expansion coming this October

Prepare yourself to break free of the borders of Ehb this October when Square Enix and Obsidian release the first expansion for Dungeon Siege III, Treasures of the Sun. The downloadable pack will whisk players to the Aranoi Desert, where they will meet “hordes of new villains only to find a forgotten abbey hiding a long-lost secret: the greatest treasure of the Azunite faith.”

The expansion will also add a variety of tweaks and enhancements including:

  • New abilities: Players will be able to attain mastery of the arcane through powerful new attack, defense and healing abilities.
  • Level up to 35: Dungeon Siege III: Treasures of the Sun will further power up players by raising the game’s existing level cap from 30 to 35.
  • More monsters and items: Players will encounter new monsters in the Aranoi Desert—including mummies and giant skeletons—and will find more powerful items, adding to the thousands already available in Dungeon Siege III.
  • Reallocate Talent & Proficiency Points: Players can reallocate points spent in Proficiencies and Talents, enabling changes to character customization throughout the campaign.
  • New Enchanting System: Transmuting items now gives players chances at gaining powerful new Vials that allow them to enhance their weapons and armor through the DLC’s new enchanting system.

Dungeon Siege III: Treasures of the Sun will be priced at $9.99 and be available to download from Steam (PC), Xbox Live (Xbox 360) and the PlayStation Network (PS3) this October.
