Alice: Madness Returns Review: Almost the Nightmare of Your Dreams

mad·ness, Noun
1. The state of being mentally ill, esp. severely.
2. Extremely foolish behavior.
3. The state of that grayish-pink thing in American McGee’s skull casing.

Only once before has American McGee dared to present an intriguing new spin on the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. Alice: Madness Returns dives back into a nightmarish Wonderland where the very fabric of poor Alice’s mind is being torn asunder from overly long levels and a maddening lack of story. Let’s see if American McGee is insane. I certainly think so.

Daily Scoop: July 25, 2011 – The nightmares begin tomorrow

It’s Monday, and tonight will be my last good night of sleep for a while, as I’ll be getting my copy of Catherine tomorrow. Hopefully the nightmares won’t be too bad… though I don’t think counting sheepmen is going to help me much.

Amazon’s Deal of the Day in video games is EA’s Mass Effect 2 for the PS3. It’s marked down to $29.99 from $39.99, so if you’re a PS3 owner who’s been dying to get into this once Xbox 360-only franchise, now’s your chance to get it on the cheap – and just in time to get it done before the third game comes out next year! Amazon’s also got two new weekly video game deals – Crysis 2 is $39.95 for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars 3D for the 3DS is $27.99.

In other news, Toys R Us is having a buy one get one free sale on some select dancing games, and they’re also having a whopping three for $10 sale on video game t-shirts. Hot!

“Mushroom Battle” is today’s Qwertee, and it’s a good one:

Gamers unite for campaign to bring back Mega Man Legends 3

Capcom has had a string of bad news last week, none more disappointing than the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 for the Nintendo 3DS. Die-hard fans have responded in a number of ways, but none as classy or hopeful as the group “100,000 Strong for Bringing Back Mega Man Legends 3.” Hoping to take the high ground in this mess, the group states, “we want them [Capcom] to see the error of their ways, not go out of business.” You can keep up to date with the group through their official site, Facebook page, or by following them on Twitter.

Their cause is a noble endeavor and we at Warp Zoned wish them the best of luck. If you have a second be sure to like their Facebook, it’s the least you could do for dedicated fans of a much-missed franchise.

Nintendo sheds more light on 2012 Zelda Symphony tour

Nintendo recently hashed out more of the details on the upcoming Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony tour. Speaking with Destructoid, Nintendo’s Bill Trinen said the 2012 global tour will differ from the October 21 show in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles show is an extension of a Japanese concert Zelda composer Koji Kondo put on, featuring a set list “hand-picked by Koji Kondo and his team.” This is a kind of “three time only” event, as a final show will take place at an unannounced European venue before the global tour kicks off in 2012.

The 2012 tour will focus on North America and the U.S., and will likely feature a distinct set list from the October show. JMP Productions, also known for PLAY! – A Video Game Symphony, will manage the run. There’s currently no plans beyond next year, but Trinen promised it would be pretty extensive.

Tickets for the October 21 event go on sale August 1 and you can get more information on the upcoming tour from the official site.

Epic hints at more Unreal universe titles

Unreal Tournament III was kind of amazing. With cross-platform play between PC and PlayStation 3, keyboard & mouse support for the latter, as well as the ability to put any mod off the internet on that version, it was the ultimate bridge between PC and console gaming, something no title since has come close to matching. Some saw it as a simplification, but I would absolutely love to see what Epic does with a new entry.

Epic Games President Mike Capps acknowledged that Unreal has been off the shelf a little too long since it’s last 2007 release. “It’s been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it’s an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here. We haven’t been giving it the attention it deserves because we’ve been focusing on Gears of War and we’re still a relatively small company.” Capps went on to say that Unreal may have plans in their upcoming business strategies. “We’ve been sort of focused on making new properties, which you’ve seen with Shadow Complex, BulletStorm and Infinity Blade, but sometimes I think just as a businessman that maybe we should be spending some more time with our existing franchises.”

I love it when business and fandom collide.

Zelda producer warming up to idea of Majora’s Mask 3DS

We had a great time playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, as seen in our review, so we wouldn’t turn down a 3D remake of the other Nintendo 64 Zelda title, Majora’s Mask. As it turns out, neither would series producer Eiji Aonuma.

Aonuma recently spoke with Nintendo Power, dishing out tons of juicy details on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, notably how this is probably the “deepest and longest” Zelda title yet. But when asked about the possibility of Majora’s Mask getting the glasses-less 3D treatment, he went beyond the usual “if the fans want it” rhetoric.

“Thinking on it now, having a handheld Majora’s Mask where you could kind of just set things down on your own time – close it, set it aside and come back to it later – might be a game play element some fans will actually take to and might really appreciate,” said Aonuma. “Especially considering how you really had to rush through the original game, in a sense.”

Majora’s Mask has been popping up in discussions a lot lately, what do you think? Would you like to see Ocarina’s sequel popping out of the screen, or maybe another entry? Let us know in the comments.

Amazon halting Cosmo Black 3DS orders

Just this morning, Amazon.com posted an “Item Under Review” update to the Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS. While this jumps out as the possible massive health epidemic that The Sun has been praying for and Nintendo President & CEO Satoru Iwata has been dismissing, it’s most likely just some kind of minor defect with Amazon’s stock. The Aqua Blue model is still available, which suggests this may just be relegated to the Cosmo Black units and not a health problem with glasses-less 3D in general. The update states:

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We’re working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

So if you’re an Amazon buyer who absolutely wants the black model, just give ’em a few hours and hopefully this will be resolved!

UPDATE: Whatever problem Amazon found with the Cosmo Black 3DS has been fixed. The handheld is available for sale once again.
