Daily Scoop: April 28, 2011 – I hope Sony catches ’em all

The ApocalyPS3 has gotten a lot of press lately, and Sony made a new announcement, now saying that our credit card information may not have been compromised. They’re working to rebuild and restore the PSN and Qriocity, and they’re working with law enforcement to find the parties responsible for this. I hope Sony makes like a Pokemon trainer and catches ’em all. Maybe the hackers will evolve into normal humans.

Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is HORI’s PS3 Wireless Fighting Stick 3 for $59.99 down from $79.99. With up to 400 hours of battery life, you can button mash until your fingers bleed. Amazon also announced Ten Days of Free Games, with today’s game being Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave. Promising!

No daily t-shirts today, but one of the new Portal 2 shirts had me ROFLing when I saw it:

Portal 2 to get DLC this Summer

Have you seen all there is to see in Portal 2 yet? Well, prepare yourself, because Valve is hard at work on some downloadable content to extend the game.

Doug Lombardi, Valve’s Vice President of Marketing, recently sat down for an interview with Fast Company (just a warning, there are massive spoilers at that link) and revealed the developer plans to announce more details on Portal 2 DLC next week:

Fast Company: There is a comic online, but beyond that, is there more Portal coming?

Lombardi: We will be announcing some DLC for it, so folks can keep a look out for more content coming this summer. We’ll be putting more details out about that in a week or so. We’ll support that with more videos or more comics.

Your Madden NFL 12 Cover Athlete: Peyton Hillis

Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis didn’t just win the Madden NFL 12 Cover Vote, he demolished his competition, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. The Madden NFL 2004 coverboy only managed to capture 34% of the vote to Hillis’ 66%. Hillis had an impressive 2010-2011 season, but this vote was clearly a huge upset.

All told, more than 12,000,000 votes were cast throughout the entire tournament and Hillis steamrolled some pretty hefty competition (including head-to-head victories over Ray Rice, Matt Ryan, Jamaal Charles and Aaron Rodgers).

Madden NFL 12 (with Peyton Hillis on the cover) will be released for the PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360 on August 30.

Amazon announces Ten Days of Free Games

Today, via their Twitter account, Amazon has announced the “Ten Days of Free Games.” The first free game available is Chicken Invaders: The Next Wave, a downloadable game that seems to be a riff on Space Invaders. Though this game seems to be nothing more than a quick casual game, you never know what might appear in the next ten days. Hopefully, more hardcore games are to follow.

Outland, Nin2-Jump, Trouble Witches on XBLA today

It’s wacky side-scroller day on the Xbox Live Arcade today. A trio of 2D titles were added to the download service including Outland, the latest game from the creators of Super Stardust HD. Also available this week is Nin2-Jump, a ninja platformer from Cave; and Trouble Witches Neo, a new shooter from SNK.

FEAR 3 delayed again; new trailer dives into story

Are we sure Alma’s last name isn’t really “Nukem?” WB Games has delayed FEAR 3 again.

OK, maybe that’s a tad harsh. But the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 shooter will miss its May release date and instead ship to stores on June 21. This is the third or fourth delay for the game (I’ve lost count), which was originally scheduled to ship last Fall.

To soften the blow, WB Games has released a new trailer detailing the FEAR story so far (spoiler warning: Alma is a crazy spirit ghost thing).

Daily Scoop: April 27, 2011 – Princess Games!

It’s Wednesday, yay! And Amazon’s having a sale on Princess games! Disney’s Tangled is $13.99 on the DS and $19.99 on the Wii, and Disney Fairies: Tinkerbell and The Lost Treasure is $13.99. As the page says, “It’s noble entertainment at commoner prices.” Who writes this stuff???

Today’s Amazon Deal of the Day in video games is Square Enix’s Bust-A-Move Universe for the 3DS. It’s $19.99 from $29.99, and is a “whole universe of fun!” Can’t beat that!

Amazon’s got loads of other deals, today, too, like the black Wii hardware bundle for $149.99 and 3D Dot Game Heroes for $13.16. Check out the whole video games clearance section for more hot deals.

Nintendo blaming earthquake for slow 3DS sales

The Nintendo 3DS has sold well, really well in fact, pushing over 3.6 million units worldwide so far. But that’s shy of the 4 million Nintendo projected, leading President and CEO Satoru Iwata to conclude, “the great earthquake largely affected the sales.”

That’s some confusing logic right there, considering more 3DS units have been sold in Japan than any other region. If the entire 3DS shipment sold out in a day, how many more units could they hope to sell?

Iwata seems just as confused, changing his analysis to a lack of marketing. “We are in a situation where we need to step up our efforts to further promote the spread of Nintendo 3DS… it has become clear that we need to do a lot more to convey the value to consumers.”

Nintendo has another marketing push planned for May, when a lot of those borderline insane features become available, like the eShop, Netflix, and free access to AT&T Hot Spots. If you ask me, Nintendo’s uncharacteristic lack of a killer app upon launch is to blame, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and the bewildered little guy you see above.
