Gone Home coming to PS4 and Xbox One on January 12, 2016

After an aborted attempt to bring the game to the Wii U in 2014, The Fullbright Company has announced that Gone Home will finally be released for consoles in 2016. However, Wii U owners appear to be out of luck as the game is only scheduled to arrive on the PS4 and Xbox One next year.

Steve Gaynor, Gone Home’s writer and designer, recorded a special message for fans about the news, and its been embedded above. Gaynor also added a bit more to his statement in a post on Fullbright’s official website:

I think the above video pretty much says it all– but let me just say how excited we are to put the game in front of a whole new audience of players. Ever since Gone Home came out we’ve wanted to be able to bring it to people who maybe aren’t PC gamers, or don’t have a good enough computer, or who just want to play in their living room, maybe to share the experience with a friend or loved one from the comfort of their couch. Our goal wasn’t to add or change things, but just to bring the game that players know and love onto consoles in the best possible form we could. We’re really excited for you all to get your hands on it!

Gone Home won “Best PC Game” and “Best Independent Game” at the 2013 VGX Awards, along with “Best Debut” at both the 2014 BAFTA Awards and the 2014 GDC Awards.

Dirt Rally exits Early Access on Steam; PS4/Xbox One launch scheduled for April 5

Codemasters has been quietly offering updates and enhancements to Dirt Rally since its release through Steam Early Access in April. Today, the developer is ready to launch the “full version” of their off-road racing game for PC players everywhere. And they’ve also announced that Dirt Rally will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on April 5, 2016.

“The launch on Steam Early Access has been a resounding success. We want to thank the community for their valuable feedback and support which has guided our development for the past eight months, resulting in a 92% positive user score. We are now ready to launch the final version of the game on PC,”” said Frank Sagnier, the CEO of Codemasters. ““Following this success on PC and a vocal demand from consumers, we are delighted to bring Dirt Rally to console players on April 5, 2016.”

With the update, Codemasters has also added a ton of “Winter Wonderland” content to Dirt Rally. The Varmland region of Sweden, which is covered in snow and ice, is your destination for this rally course. And a new gameplay trailer, embedded above, will give you a taste of this “Winter Wonderland” and the rest of the game.

Minecraft is coming to the Wii U on December 17; Nintendo-exclusive add-ons in the works

The whimsical world of Minecraft and Nintendo’s colorful sensibilities seem like a match made in heaven. So the frustration that many Nintendo fans feel at the game’s absence from the Wii U is understandable. But that all changes on December 17 when Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be added to the Wii U eShop.

Priced at $29.99, Minecraft: Wii U Edition will include Off-TV Play and six of the most popular add-on packs (Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack, Natural Texture Pack, City Texture Pack, Fantasy Texture Pack, and Festive Mash-up Pack). A huge number of additional add-on packs will be available for Wii U owners on December 17 too:

  • Festive Skin Pack
  • The Simpsons Skin Pack
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 1
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 2
  • Star Wars Classic Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack
  • Mass Effect Mash-Up Pack
  • Skyrim Mash-Up Pack
  • Plastic Texture Pack
  • Candy Texture Pack
  • Cartoon Texture Pack
  • Steampunk Texture Pack
  • Pattern Texture Pack
  • Greek Mythology Mash-Up Pack
  • Halloween 2015 Mash-Up Pack

Finally, Nintendo and Mojang also announced that they will collaborate on at least one Minecraft add-on pack in the near future. Minecraft: Mario? Minecraft: Zelda? Minecraft: Metroid? Neither company is talking just yet, but I can’t wait to find out what they have planned.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released as a “multi-part series”

finalfantasyviiremake-header

In addition to revealing a new trailer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, Square Enix also confirmed the game will eventually be released as a “multi-part series.”

According to the publisher’s complete statement, “[Final Fantasy VII Remake] will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience.” That doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on, but it sounds like the game could be released episodically, perhaps similar in style to Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

In anticipation of the PlayStation Experience show, the PlayStation Blog’s YouTube Channel also got a chance to talk with Producer Yoshinori Kitase about the game. While he didn’t offer any new details about the Final Fantasy VII Remake’s release schedule, he did confirm that the real-time nature of the gameplay seen in the trailer will somewhat carry over to the final game:

I can’t say the new game is completely action-based, but it has more of that element and real-time than the previous game. However, what makes Final Fantasy and RPG different from other games is that players have the ability to choose weapons, capabilities, and magic to be strategic minded, so while the new game has more real-time element, it will also maintain that strategy building element, balancing these two factors perfectly to enhance the gaming experience.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for the PS4 “first,” but when that’ll be and in what form it’ll take is anybody’s guess.

Rez Infinite announced for PS4 with PlayStation VR support

RezInfiniteScreenRez Infinite was announced for the PlayStation 4 (with PlayStation VR features) at this weekend’s PlayStation Experience. Tetsuya Mizuguchi took to the PlayStation Blog to go into more detail about the game, which was playable at the event this weekend. It was even playable inside their special “Synesthesia Suit,” which he compares to the PlayStation 2’s “Trance Vibrator.”

In his poignant post, Mizuguchi talks about how the original Rez, which came out in 2001, was way ahead of its time. “Well, to be honest, when the original Rez came out back in 2001, not everyone understood what we were trying to do with the game — but the few people that did ‘get it,’ really got it,” he wrote. “A dedicated and steadily growing number of fans called it visionary. Revolutionary. Ahead of its time.”

The technology of the time just wasn’t up to their vision, but now, 14 years later, it might just be good enough for their game to truly come to life. While there’s no release date set for the game, Mizuguchi said they’ll be able to announce more soon. “Our time is coming, my friends. I hope you’ll be there for it.”
