New Retail Releases: Call of Duty WWII, Spintires Mud Runner, Dot Hack G.U. Last Recode, More

Only a handful of new games will be available on store shelves this week, as most publishers are running scared from the pending launch of the latest game in the Call of Duty franchise. The PC, PS4, and Xbox One release of Call of Duty: WWII has built up quite a bit of hype this year, especially for its return to the European Theater of World War II

And if you’re thinking of upgrading to a PS4 Slim, Sony and Activision have teamed up to produce a special PS4 Slim 1TB + Call of Duty: WWII Limited Edition Bundle that’s decked out in a Green Camouflage color scheme.

But several other games will be available this week, including Bandai Namco’s Dot Hack G.U.: Last Recode (a PS4 remake of the entire Dot Hack G.U. trilogy) and Spintires: Mud Runner (a bizarro driving game for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One).

A complete rundown of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Activision unveils the return of Nazi Zombies in new Call of Duty: WWII trailer

As promised, Activision and Sledgehammer unveiled the brand new Nazi Zombies cooperative mode for Call of Duty: WWII during the first day of Comic-Con 2017.

The terrifying trailer includes voicework from a clearly-insane Udo Kier, but no appearances from the player-characters, who will be portrayed by David Tennant, Elodie Yung, Katheryn Winnick, and Ving Rhames:

Call of Duty: WWII – Nazi Zombies is a terrifying, new zombies cooperative experience that transports players into a labyrinth of chilling occult Nazi zombies experiments, and monstrous creations set mythically in World War II. The story unfolds as an international team peels back the vile layers of a malevolent plot masterminded by the Axis powers to harness unimaginable occult forces and create an invincible undead army. Featuring voices and likenesses, the global cast features David Tennant, Elodie Yung, Katheryn Winnick, Udo Kier, and Ving Rhames.

“With Nazi Zombies, we’re creating a frightening world full of terrifying characters and events that will make you jump and look over your shoulder. There’s an incredible amount of myth and lore, which our team has poured through in our development,” said Glen Schofield, a Studio Head at Sledgehammer Games. “This is unlike anything before, we’re taking players to some very dark, grim places in Nazi Zombies. This is one hell of a horror experience.”

Michael Condrey, another Studio Head at Sledgehammer Games added, “We couldn’t be more excited to showcase our reveal of Nazi Zombies here at San Diego Comic Con. It’s been great to return to creating a horror-based experience, and with Call of Duty, head back to the Nazi Zombies roots. The team at the studio is proud of the opportunity to deliver something special for the fans.”

Call of Duty: WWII will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 3.

Get your first look at Call of Duty: WWII’s multiplayer in a new trailer and 30-minute livestream

It looks like Activision’s desire to take the Call of Duty franchise back to the beginning in Call of Duty: WWII also applies to the game’s multiplayer online. A new trailer released during this year’s E3 Expo showcases a mode that is very realistic and down-to-earth… while also being packed full of epic setpieces and explosions aplenty.

I’ll let Kevin Kelly, of the Activision Games Blog, relay more information about Call of Duty: WWII’s multiplayer options:

Divisions
Divisions fundamentally redefines how players invest in their Multiplayer career. This is a reimagining of the create-a-class system, and players will choose from five iconic World War II divisions each with specific division training and division weapon skills. This streamlined approach to Multiplayer gives players the ability to reinforce their individual play styles while dominating the enemy in some of the most iconic locations of the world’s largest conflict.

  • Infantry Division riflemen are always in the thick of it with finely-tuned rifles and impeccable marksmanship.
  • Well-equipped with incendiary rounds and tactical grenades, the Expeditionary Division’s shotguns literally pack heat.
  • Airborne Division paratroopers endure extreme physical conditioning to outmaneuver opponents with their submachine guns.
  • Focused on stealth and target identification, Mountain Division snipers generate constant fear in the enemy and strike when least expected.
  • Armored Division soldiers are the best supplied in battle and hold down positions with their explosives and light machine guns.

Multiplayer
Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer marks an exciting return to the franchise’s World War II roots and combat that defined the franchise. Prepare for fast-paced, grounded action with an arsenal of iconic weapons and equipment in the fight to liberate a continent in the throes of tyranny. Call of Duty: WWII immerses players in the brutal gameplay of history’s largest conflict.

Call of Duty: WWII Multiplayer offers players true franchise innovations across the entire experience with brand new ways to connect, compete and engage as a community. Divisions redefines how players develop their WWII Multiplayer Careers by enlisting in five iconic WWII-era divisions. War Mode lets players compete against each other in team-driven, objective gameplay. And Headquarters is a transformational new experience that will connect players like never before.

War Mode
War is an all-new game mode where players must work as a team to defeat the enemy. This narrative-driven Multiplayer experience immerses players in iconic World War II locations. Allied and Axis forces clash in team-driven assault and defend missions for key strategic objectives. We’ll be taking a deep dive into this new mode very soon, so stay tuned!

If you’re itching to try out Call of Duty: WWII’s multiplayer modes, don’t worry, Activision will launch a Closed Beta this Summer on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. PS4 players who pre-order the game will get the first crack at the test phase from August 25 through August 28. The Closed Beta’s second round will begin on September 1, and it’ll add in players who pre-ordered the game on the Xbox One. Activision will announce Closed Beta dates for PC users at a later time.

And finally, the latest Making of Call of Duty livestream also focuses on multiplayer, and you can dig deeper into the game’s online modes with host Alison Haislip after the break. (more…)

Sledgehammer Games reveals their “Vision” for Call of Duty: WWII in new trailer

Sledgehammer Games is taking Call of Duty back to World War II this Fall in the less-than-imaginatively titled Call of Duty: WWII. After giving the world their first look at the game late last week, the developer is back with a new trailer discussing their “Vision” for the project.

For Sledgehammer, the key word appears to be “authenticity,” as they’ve recruited World War II historian and author Martin K.A. Morgan to help with the game’s story, which will be based on real-life events. They’re also closely modeling WWII-era vehicles and weapons, and testing those weapons on a firing range to ensure they sound the same in the game as they would on the battlefield.

The development team is also working with something of a mantra for Call of Duty: WWII… “Dark and Beautiful.” They want to game feel “emotionally dark” while also looking “visually beautiful.”

You can see if they’re on the right track in the new “Vision” trailer, which has been embedded above. And don’t forget, Call of Duty: WWII will launch for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 3.
