Soul Calibur V officially announced, more details coming at E3

Game director Daishi Odashima promised us last month it was coming, and now it’s official: Soul Calibur V will be launching on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. At Namco Bandai’s “Step Up Dubai 2011” event earlier today, producer Tago Hisaharu took the stage to debut the first trailer for the game. The story takes place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV, which was released back in 2008. The official website currently has a teaser countdown, which will end in a little over four hours, as of this writing.

Stay tuned for the official trailer of Soul Calibur V, as well as more details on the game as they trickle down at E3.

IO announces Hitman: Absolution

All the teasing is finally (well, almost) over as IO Interactive took to their Twitter account today to post a teaser trailer announcing Hitman: Absolution.

The trailer is very short, but it confirms that IO plans a full reveal at E3 and shows Agent 47 screwing a silencer into his trademark gun (which was used as part of IO’s Hitman ARG). In keeping with the assassin’s secretive nature, no platforms or release date for Himan: Absolution was revealed.

Activision: No Diablo III in 2011, Call of Duty 8 will be awesome

Activision held their quarter financial call yesterday and laid out a few more details about their 2011 slate of games. The company’s executives stressed that any real information about these titles would have to wait for E3, they did reveal a few juicy tidbits of information.

First off, it looks like it’s unlikely that a new Blizzard game will be released in 2011. That means no Diablo III and definitely no StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Instead, the publisher’s COO, Thomas Tippl, said to expect both games in 2012: “[O]ur outlook at this time does not include a new game from Blizzard in 2011. Should Blizzard not release a major title this year, we would expect, for planning purposes, to launch a minimum of 2 Blizzard titles in 2012.”

Mike Morhaime, the CEO of Blizzard, was a tad more optimistic, saying the team wants to release Diablo III in 2011, but that they’re not ready to confirm an official release date yet: “The development team is working hard to try and launch Diablo III this year. But I want to be clear that we do not have an official release date or window yet. As always, we will not compromise the quality of the game in order to hit a window.”

While a 2011 release date is still a question mark, A Diablo III beta is being planned for the Summer.

One Activision title that does have a confirmed 2011 release date is the currently unannounced Call of Duty 8. The publisher still hasn’t shared any new information about the next entry in the mega-selling series, but Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, is pretty convinced it’ll be awesome: “By any measure, Call of Duty is one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world and we expect this year’s game will set a new standard for this incredible franchise. The creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it will reset the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and of course epic action. The game today has exceeded every internal milestone and we look forward to sharing this with you soon.”

Hirshberg also confirmed that a new James Bond game is in the works for 2011. But again, it looks like we’ll have to wait until E3 to learn more about it (and all of these titles).

Miyamoto: “Super Mario 3DS is a combination of Galaxy, Mario 64”

The 3DS’ lineup is slowly starting to fill out. Ocarina of Time 3D has been given a release date. Star Fox 64 3D has a date in Japan, with an American one sure to follow. And now, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed a little about the (currently untitled) Super Mario Bros. 3DS.

The famed developer told Edge: “It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and [Super Mario 64]. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

Learning that the next 3D Mario game will play like the previous 3D Mario games isn’t too surprising. Nor is finding out that the raccoon tail in the game’s logo refers to the return of the Super Leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3: “The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is. You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

Miyamoto finished the interview by revealing that Super Mario Bros. 3DS will be brand new (“completely original” he says) and that it’s coming this year.

But I guess we’ll have to wait until E3 to learn more.

SSX to come down the mountain in January

Electronic Arts held a press event a few days ago where they revealed a little bit more about SSX. Most of the presentation should be familar to anyone who read the SSX team’s interview with Game Informer last week. But Creative Director Todd Batty did reveal one new bit of info about SSX: it’ll be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in January 2012.

Batty also confirmed that SSX will be playable at this year’s E3 Expo and that the game will feature “spontaneous avalanches,” which will no doubt make the descent down the mountain even deadlier.

I haven’t played an SSX game in ten years and this already sounds too awesome for words.

Resident Evil Revelations demo included with RE Mercenaries 3D

With the 3DS now in stores, Capcom has some exciting news for the handheld’s new owners concerning the Resident Evil series. According to the publisher, when Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D ships to stores on July 6, it’ll include a demo of the second game in the series planned for the 3DS, Resident Evil Revelations.

“Set on board an ocean liner, the demo lets players take control of one of the full game’s characters, Jill Valentine, as she explores the ship’s dark interior, killing any mysterious creatures that emerge from the shadows.”

That’s all we know for now, but Capcom has promised to reveal more about Revelations at this year’s E3 expo, which will be head in Los Angeles from June 7 through the 9th.

Hitman 5 ARG points to E3 reveal

The users at the Hitman Forum have apparently cracked the barcode code from IO Interactive’s alternate reality game and discovered the first screenshot for Hitman 5. While the game’s publisher (Square Enix) has yet to confirm that the image to your left is an authentic screenshot, it does feature Agent 47’s signature gloves and silencer.

Further manipulation of the barcodes also reveal a number that looks suspiciously like a date: 06-07-11. And surprise surprise, that’s the first day of the E3 expo.

So it looks like Hitman 5 is coming (which we knew) and it’ll be announced at E3 (which is nice to know, but kind of obvious). But why didn’t IO/Square Enix just come out and announce it? This viral marketing stuff is annoying.

Tecmo to unmask Ninja Gaiden III at E3

Publisher Tecmo Koei and developer Team Ninja have unsheathed the first teaser for Ninja Gaiden III. The very short video is actually a POV shot from the eyes of a rival ninja that has just been skewered by series protagonist Ryu Hayabusa. As he thrusts again and again, more and more blood fills the screen causing Ryu to reach for his mask. The video then cuts to the words “Unmask E3 2011″… where Tecmo Koei no doubt plans to reveal more about Ryu’s next adventure.

Ninja Gaiden III will be the first game in the series not developed by Tomonobu Itagaki, who left Team Ninja in 2008.
