Cataclysm sales make PC gaming market say “WoW”
Though it comes as no surprise, Blizzard Entertainment has done it again with its fourth installment of its highly successful PC game World of Warcraft. With World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Blizzard has set record monthly sales for PC-games, selling more than 4.7 million copies in its first month.
According to internal company records, one-day sales of the game upon its release were more than 3.3 million. Before the release of its third expansion, World of Warcraft had over 12 million subscribers, which makes sense considering its second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, previously held the title of fastest-selling PC game of all time. Cataclysm has since broken that record.
Cataclysm brings new quests and lands for players to explore, and Blizzard CEO and Co-founder Mike Morhaime has called it their “biggest and most ambitious expansion yet.” Blizzard’s loyal community have helped to maintain World of Warcraft’s position as the “world’s most popular subscription-based MMORPG,” and with this recent news, it doesn’t appear to be moving from that position any time soon.

Battlefield 3 to be unveiled at GDC
When Electronic Arts released a Limited Edition of Medal of Honor last year, the box included a multiplayer beta invite for the upcoming Battlefield 3. While technically unannounced at the time, the publisher plans to lift the lid on the third game in the Battlefield series during a March 1st event at this year’s Game Developers Conference.
Besides Battlefield 3, the entire all of EA Partners’ 2011 releases will be on hand at the show including Spicy Horse’s Alice: Madness Returns, Easy Studios’ Battlefield Play4Free, Crytek’s Crysis 2, 38 Studios’ Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning and Grasshopper Manufacture’s Shadows of the Damned.

The Secret World MMO to be co-published by Funcom and EA
EA has teamed up with independent developer Funcom to release their new MMO, The Secret World. This upcoming MMO on the PC is set in the modern days, and allows players to become members of one of three secret societies – the Illuminati, the Dragon, and the Templar. The struggle for power will cross many locations, including Egypt, London, Seoul, and New York, and will include monster battles. Sounds like National Treasure meets World of Warcraft, if you ask me.
Funcom has previously developed more than 20 games, including MMOs Anarchy Online and Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. There’s no release date yet on The Secret World, but the community currently has hundreds of thousands of beta players, according to a new press release. Seems like a smart move for all parties involved.

Amnesia saves Frictional Games from a Dark Descent
Though it’s been done time and again, it’s hard to go wrong with the classic Cinderella story of an underdog standing up to the big guy and coming out on top. This certainly isn’t the premise of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but it is for its indie game developer Frictional Games. These underdogs released their fourth PC game in their fourth year of business, and it has proven to be a game that won’t be forgotten.
Before releasing their most recent game, Frictional’s “dream estimates” of sales hovered around 100,000 units. In reality, that figure has doubled, with Amnesia selling almost 200,000 units after four months. The average daily unit sales for the game have not dropped below 200 units, which is impressive for an indie game in an age where anything can be found for free if a user knows where to look. Frictional has stated that they know these sales aren’t typical, and they may be right, especially considering their marketing plan.
“While we tried to make as much noise as possible at the release of the game, our marketing efforts have been far from big,” explained Frictional on their blog. The indie company released movie clips of the game, made demo versions available and sent out review copies for feedback, but the real marketing magic seems to have come from the users themselves.
Players spread their tales of playing one of the scariest games of all time, inspiring reaction videos to be made, one of which received about 775,000 views. And really, what better promotion is there for a horror game than a video titled “Holy shit, Amnesia WHAT THE [F—]”?
The most encouraging part of Frictional’s story is their new-found financial confidence.
“We are now completely financially stable and have enough money to complete our next game without any problems,” read Frictional’s blog on Friday. Because a publisher was not hired for Amnesia, Frictional was able to keep all the royalties earned from their game without having to first pay back an advance and subsequent royalties due to a third party. Most independent developers and artists in the creative world won’t see a penny of their royalties from just one album or term of contract for years. Frictional did it in four months.
Becoming a financially sound company may mean more risks taken by Frictional in the future, ranging from more frequent game releases to experimentation on console platforms.

God of War III, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood lead 2011 WGA nominations
The Writers Guild of America yesterday announced the nominees for the 2011 Writers Guild Award in Videogame Writing (but it’s a shame that no one at the WGA knows that “video game” is two words).
This year’s nominees cover some familiar territory as three of the six nominees are sequels to previous nominees: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (the original Force Unleashed actually won in 2009). But don’t count out the three newcomers, including God of War III, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Singularity.
The winner will be announced at a bicoastal ceremony (one in New York and one in LA) on Saturday, February 5. Congratulations to all the nominated writers, which you can find after the jump. (more…)

Duke Nukem Forever in EGM’s February issue
Electronic Gaming Monthly’s February issue exists to let fans of Duke Nukem Forever know that more information is coming in late January or early February. What’s with the gaming industry making announcements about when they’re going to be making more announcements? In the meantime, you can satiate your lust with an interview with Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford. He also mentions that the developer’s other game, Aliens: Colonial Marines, probably won’t be released this year.
Oh yeah, and in other news, Red Dead Redemption was EGM’s GOTY. And they gave Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded a 5.0. Ouch. More details at NeoGAF.

Next Modern Warfare may be a prequel; Raven likely working on Call of Duty
An anonymous source who previously identified many Xbox-related rumors leaked that Infinity Ward’s next game will be a prequel to the original Modern Warfare, Call of Duty 4. The details were a lot of negatives – the game will not be called “Modern Warfare 3,” will not use a new engine, and will not be released this year. The alleged game focuses on Ghost and will revisit many of the areas of the first two Modern Warfare games, but through a different perspective. This seems to align with rumors from 2009 that Ghost would be getting his own spin-off game like the comic mini-series. If this rumor is true, Infinity Ward must have been hit pretty hard by its talent exodus to not be able to complete a game on its two year cycle, especially using older scenery with no new engine.
In a related matter, the rumors that Raven Software (the studio behind Singularity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Wolfenstein) have been conscripted to the ever-growing roster of studios working on Call of Duty seems more likely. Their website currently lists a job for Lead FX Artist on “an established console-based, realistic, first-person military shooter.” Raven has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision for some time now, making the established “military shooter” an obvious reference.
