Duke Nukem Forever finally arrives May 3, 2011

After many, many years in the making, Duke Nukem Forever finally has a concrete release date, and it will be launching on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on May 3, 2011. Gearbox revealed the story to Game Informer this morning, with its president Randy Pitchford calling it “the most inconceivable, incorrigible and inspiring turn around story in the history of the video game industry – the coming of Duke Nukem Forever on May 3, 2011.”

I got a chance to play the game at PAX Prime and it certainly is something to see. The same look and feel of Duke Nukem 3D is recreated beautifully in what is probably one of the best HD re-imaginings of a series I have ever seen. Long story short: give this game a shot.

Activision wants to close Bizarre Creations

Activision has spent the last three months looking for a buyer for British development team Bizarre Creations. Yesterday, with no buyer in sight, the publisher told Develop that they’ve recommended the studio for closure. And Bizarre has responded that they’ve accepted this decision.

The future of the Bizarre team is rather murky at this point, but Coddy Johnson, Activision Worldwide Studios’ chief operating officer said, “We’re offering the studio as many resources as possible, including counselling, external placement services and external career fairs.”

Bizarre released two games in 2010 that underperformed their rather lofty expectations. Blur was pitched as “Mario Kart for adults,” but most adults indicated that they’d rather play Mario Kart. And November’s James Bond 007: Blood Stone was overshadowed by last year’s other Bond game, a remake of GoldenEye 007.

Red Dead Redemption, Enslaved, God of War III lead 2011 AIAS nominees

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) has announced the nominees for the 14th annual Interactive Achievement Awards (IAAs). As expected, Red Dead Redemption lead the way with nine nominations including Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design and Game of the Year.

God of War III and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (a title that is already being considered one of the best games you’ve never played) shared the second-most nominations with six apiece. Other games up for multiple awards include Call of Duty: Black Ops, Heavy Rain, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and Mass Effect 2 (five nominations apiece) along with Dance Central, Limbo and Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty (four apiece).

The awards will be handed out by Jay Mohr at the 2011 D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit on Thursday, February 10. The hour-long show will be broadcast on G4 two days later, February 12, at 4:00 PM (Eastern Time) with a webcast scheduled for 7:30 PM (Eastern Time) at G4tv.com/DICE.

A complete list of nominees can be on the AIAS website, but the “Game of the Year” will come from this list of five: Angry Birds HD, Call of Duty: Black Ops, God of War III, Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption.

Killzone 3 including multiplayer beta vouchers for SOCOM 4

As if getting one highly anticipated PlayStation 3 shooter wasn’t enough, new copies of Killzone 3 from select retailers will also include vouchers for the multiplayer beta of SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals.  On the pre-order site for Killzone 3, only Best Buy, GameStop, and Amazon are listed as supporting retailers, but be sure to check for box art with the SOCOM dog tags, as pictured to the left, to know if your copy has it.  The voucher will come on both standard and Helghast editions of the game, and players are encouraged to check the official SOCOM 4 site for details as soon as they pick up their copy.

2011 is looking to be the most cash-strapped year to date for PS3 owners, so it’s simultaneously nice and cruel of Sony to give us ways to check out multiple titles from one box.  Killzone 3 drops on February 22, 2011, and you can expect our very own Warp Zoned review to follow shortly, as well as yours truly losing all of his free-time on his second Killzone platinum trophy.

THQ is taking the WWE to the arcade this March (March 29 to be exact) with WWE All-Stars, a wildly over-the-top wrestling game that brings together two generations of the WWE’s finest.

PlayStation Store update for 1/18/11 brings Mass Effect 2 to the PSN

This week’s PlayStation store update brings a ton of great content, most notable of which is the digital version of Mass Effect 2.  Coming in at 12GB, the game is accompanied by a load of free and priced downloadable content, as well as a free game trial for PSN Plus Subscribers.  Other notable releases include Modern Combat: Domination at a reasonable $7.99 (with a demo if the low price point isn’t enough for you to give it a shot) and a handful of Neo Geo games now available on PSP, including Alpha Mission II and The King of Fighters ’94. Top Spin 4 serving up biggest roster ever on March 15

Andre Agassi is returning to a virtual tennis court for the first time in over a decade and he’s bringing the largest roster of players ever to appear in a tennis game with him. 2K Sports has revealed that 25 players Top Spin 4 will be released for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 on March 15.

Valve details PS3 Portal 2 Steam functionality… and it’s good

When Gabe Newell announced at Sony’s E3 press conference that Portal 2 would be bringing Steam over to the PS3, gamers familiar with the service knew something special was going to happen.  We just didn’t know which features were being carried over.  Today, Valve released a press release detailing exactly which ones: cross-platform multiplayer among PS3, PC, and Mac users; cross-platform chat and game invites; PS3 saves stored on the Steam cloud server; and linking your PSN and Steam accounts will allow you to play your copy on PC and Mac as well, via Steam Play.

This is a major step forward for cross-platform gaming, the first notable development since Epic Games released Unreal Tournament III on the PS3 and PC with cross-platform multiplayer back in 2007.  Personally, I want to see a lot of games in the Steam store available for purchase on PS3.  If they allow keyboard & mouse support, I’d be all over playing Counter-Strike source in surround sound on my HDTV.
