Prototype 2, Kinect Star Wars lead April 2012 NPD report
Activision’s Prototype 2 took the top spot in the latest NPD report of bestselling games. Another new release, the Xbox 360-exclusive Kinect Star Wars, “did the Han Solo” all the way up to #2.
The remainder of the list is overflowing with familiar faces from last Fall including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (#3), NBA 2K12 (#5), and Just Dance 3 (#9). It wasn’t a Fall release, but Mass Effect 3 continues to hold strong at #8 now that the controversy over the game’s ending has come to… an end.
In terms of dollars made, the game industry suffered a 32% drop in overall sales from April 2011 ($630.4 million versus $930.9 million) when Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat ruled the charts.
You can check out the NPD Group’s complete list of bestsellers for April 2012 after the break. (more…)

Creative Assembly’s Alien game is coming to current AND future generation consoles
A job posting on Creative Assembly’s website confirms that their long-gestating Alien project will be available on “current and future generation consoles” when its finally released. While it’s too early to make any definitive statements, this kind of current generation/next generation development tactic was very common in the early days of the PS3 and Xbox 360. Which means Creative Assembly’s Alien game might be released alongside the launch of the PS4 and/or Xbox 720. Maybe. Possibly.
While we don’t know where it’ll land, we do know it’ll include “gameplay” and “multiplayer.” So that’s something, I guess.
Crysis 3 teaser trailer teases a gameplay trailer coming April 24
This Crysis 3 teaser trailer is 19 seconds long… and it’s all just a setup to let us know that a full-length gameplay trailer will be released on Tuesday, April 24. Enjoy, I guess.
Dirt Showdown drifts into stores on May 29
The crackling sound of spitfire coming from rally car exhaust pipes will be back on your console soon, because Codemasters has brought you a new edition of Dirt to play around in. Dirt Showdown will be hitting the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in Europe on May 24 and here in North America on May 29. If you want to try before you buy, a demo will be released on May 1.
As is usual, Dirt Showdown will feature tons of tire squealing crashes, flips, and the occasional explosion. But there will also be “Hoonigan Mode” which allows you to pull of some insane tricks and stunts in your rip roaring rally cars. The game also features demolition derbies and figure 8 racing which will of course make for some destructive fun when you have a couple friends over. You might be able to take out some pent up animosity on their jumped-up jalopy.
Showdown is the first game from the publisher’s new division, Codemasters Racing. Dirt Showdown will also feature the brand new RaceNet beta, which will connect players to their stats to see how many doors they’ve blown off of their rivals.
But, unlike Ken Block, you can just hit the reset button if you happen to smash head-on into a jersey barrier.

Bethesda: Prey 2 isn’t cancelled, but it’s been delayed
Last year, the Internet rumor mill claimed that Doom 4 was cancelled. Bethesda responded by claiming the game had never been announced.
Thankfully, they were able to handle the rumors of Prey 2‘s cancellation a bit better. But the company still ended up announcing that the alien shooter sequel has been delayed into 2013 (or possibly beyond).
Tracey Thompson, Bethesda’s Director of Global PR, had this to say about the delay:
Developmentof Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.
A new release window wasn’t announced. I wouldn’t worry too much about this latest delay as they’re nothing new for the Prey series. It actually took 11 years of off-and-on development before Prey was released for the PC and Xbox 360 back in 2006.
THQ hits Darksiders II with a delay

After some subtle teasing by the company’s Vice President, THQ has confirmed that Darksiders II will miss its previously announced June 26 release date. The PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game will now be released sometime in August due to a need for “additional time for polish”:
This is great news for the team at Vigil, because it allows additional time for polish and to ensure that all aspects of Darksiders II meet the high-quality bar the team is targeting. In game development, more time is always a good thing for quality and the Vigil team is dedicated to providing the definitive Darksiders experience.
Darksiders II is also in development for the Wii U and is currently scheduled to launch alongside Nintendo’s next system sometime this Fall.

Bethesda would consider it a great honor if you watch this awesome Dishonored trailer
Do you love steampunk? Or futuristic depictions of Victorian England? How about oppressive stormtroopers in power armor sticking it to plague-ravaged peasants? That’s always fun. Good thing there’s a supernaturally-gifted assassin in a supersuit running around to even the odds.
Let me repeat that, Bethesda’s Dishonored stars a supernaturally-gifted assassin in a supersuit.
Check out the trailer above to watch him in action and be on the lookout for the Arkane Studios-developed game on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 later this year.
