Latest PS4, Xbox 720 rumors point to 2012 release
This is getting ridiculous.
Edge Magazine has finagled a few new next-generation rumors and they’re reporting that the Xbox 720 (or whatever it’s eventually called) will be released in late 2012 alongside the Wii U. Ubisoft Montreal is said to be working on their next project using Xbox 720 “target boxes” (PCs that closely align with the specs of the next Xbox) with preliminary devkits said to arrive any day now.
Another Edge source, corroborating an earlier set of rumors, has told the magazine that an internal Sony studio has begun development on its first PlayStation 4 game.
It’s safe to say that no one is quite sure when the next generation of game consoles will launch. Earlier rumors pointed towards a 2013 release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 successors, but each new rumor seems to point to a different release date. And Nintendo’s plan to launch the Wii U in 2012 surely has Microsoft and Sony mulling all their options, so a 2012 release isn’t an entirely crazy idea.
I have no idea when the next generation is going to begin. But it sounds like your average developer doesn’t know either.
PlayStation 4 manufacturing rumored to begin this year
Sources in the Taiwanese component manufacturing industry claim that production for the PlayStation 4 is to begin by the end of this year, with a ship date sometime in 2012. Foxconn and Pegatron Technology, who already manufacture the PlayStation 3, are rumored to undertake this task as well, according to DigiTimes. The initial shipment will allegedly consist of 20 million units, which will have built-in Kinect-like recognition.
It’s important to keep in mind that these were the same two companies alleged to have the PS3 Slim contracts when that redesign was only a rumor. Sony dissed E3 to announce the system (and price cut) at GamesCom in 2009; I would not be surprised to see them do it again.
Sony confirms PS4 is in development
During Sony’s quarterly financial briefing yesterday, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato revealed that development on the PlayStation 4 has begun. Sony is the final platform maker to enter the next next generation ring as Microsoft revealed plans for the Xbox 720 back in March while Nintendo will officially unveil the Wii 2 at this year’s E3 Expo.
The PS4 announcement came about due to a question relating to Sony’s increased research and development costs. Kato’s reply was little more than a variation on “we’re always looking to the future,” but it was confirmation of the PS4 nonetheless:
“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life,” Kato said, “but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”
Obviously, it’s much early to wonder when we’ll see the PS4 or to speculate on what kind of tech it’ll contain. But it’s nice to know the development process has begun.
