Nintendo Download: Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright, Azure Striker Gunvolt, SteamWorld Dig, more

If you’re a fan of retro games, then I recommend taking a gander at this week’s Nintendo eShop update… you might just find something you like.
Wii U owners will be able to download Mega Man X3, the final Mega Man game released for the Super NES. SteamWorld Dig, Image & Form’s critically-acclaimed 3DS platformer, is also available for the Wii U today. Finally, The Fall, a moody platformer that the developer has compared to Super Metroid, was released earlier this week.
Over on the 3DS, players will get the chance to download Azure Striker Gunvolt, a Super NES-inspired game created by Keiji Inafune and Inti Creates. And for a limited time, players who purchase Azure Striker Gunvolt will also receive Mighty Gunvolt, an NES-inspired platformer, for free. Also available this week is Thorium Wars: Attack of the Skyfighter, a space shooter, and Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, a puzzle/crime-filled crossover of epic proportions.
You can find more information on all of these games after the break. (more…)

SteamWorld Dig shovels its way onto the PS4, Vita in March

SteamWorld Dig was one of the biggest surprises of 2013. The game, from Swedish developer Image & Form, was a smash hit on the 3DS eShop (and got quite a good review from our own Mike Ryan) before making its way to Steam in December. And on Friday, Image & Form announced that SteamWorld Dig will soon find itself available on the PlayStation Store as a downloadable game for the PS4 and Vita.
SteamWorld Dig is a steampunk-ish platformer set in a mining town and starring an “Eastwood-esque” robot named Rusty. Venturing into the abandoned mines, Rusty must unearth gemstones and materials while doing battle with hordes of underground creatures and ensuring that he still has a way back to the surface.
“We are thrilled to present SteamWorld Dig to the PlayStation community,” said Image & Form CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson. “This is our first release ever on a stationary console, and a long-standing dream of ours. So many PlayStation gamers have asked us to bring the game to their hardware, and we can’t wait to join the community both on PS4 and Vita. We have a fantastic following on 3DS and Steam, and now we will reach a whole new audience. We are really very excited.”
SteamWorld Dig will be available on the PlayStation Store in March (at a price of $9.99) as a Cross-Buy title.

SteamWorld Dig Review: Can Y’all Dig It? (We Can Dig It!)

Indie games are making a big splash these days. The era of digital titles has made way for smaller developers to put their creativity to work without need for AAA publishers. Case in point: SteamWorld Dig, the latest entry from Swedish developers Image & Form. This digital game just goes to show that you don’t need to spend $60+ for an enjoyable experience. And despite a few shortcomings, SteamWorld Dig is easily one of the best titles available on Nintendo’s 3DS eShop. (more…)

Nintendo Download: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, DuckTales Remastered, more

Welcome to another Nintendo Download! This week, 3DS owners will be able to download the latest Mario RPG, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, on Sunday, August 11. Two days later, on August 13, Wii U owners will be able to relieve the hurricane of fun that is DuckTales Remastered.
But what if you want to download something new today?
3DS owners will have a choice of three games: the steampunk-styled platforming of SteamWorld Dig, the 3D bowling of Smash Bowling 3D, and the tangram puzzles of Tangram Style. Wii U owners only get two new games today: the Virtual Console-bound Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire and the Wii U GamePad party game Spin the Bottle: Bumpie’s Party.
You can find more information about all of this week’s new releases after the break. (more…)

SteamWorld Dig will be added to 3DS eShop tomorrow
Image & Form is bringing SteamWorld Dig, a 2D platformer set in a steampunk world (bet you didn’t see that one coming), to the 3DS eShop tomorrow, August 8. The robots are the good guys in SteamWorld Dig and you can learn all about their wild west world by checking out the launch trailer above or reading this very quick plot description:
You play the protagonist, Rusty – a lone-wolf, steam-powered cowbot who has come to an old mining town in great need. While digging your way through the old earth for riches and helping the townfolks get back on their feet, you unwittingly wake an ancient evil that lurks below…
After it’s added to the 3DS eShop tomorrow, SteamWorld Dig will be available to download for $8.99.
