Uncharted NGP details revealed by Naughty Dog

Nathan Drake (and hopefully Victor “god damn” Sullivan) will be coming to Sony’s new handheld system, the NGP. In addition to revealing that the NGP version will take place between Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra also said that there will probably be some kind of tie-in with the upcoming Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Balestra also said that “Uncharted NGP features a different vibe and rhythm than the PlayStation 3 games so people can play it in short bursts,” according to Eurogamer. They’re going to give us “more exploration and fewer gunfights, letting people breathe while playing.”

Sony Bend, responsible for the awesome Resistance: Retribution for the PSP, will be developing Uncharted NGP. Not only that, they’ll be working with actors, which means we’ll hopefully be getting the same quality we’ve seen in the console versions.

All NGP games will be released simultaneously as digital downloads

Sony’s commitment to releasing full-sized PSP games on the PlayStation Store has been a bit hit and miss over the handheld’s life. It’s likely one of the key reasons why the PSP Go has been dead in the water for some time now. But that will all change with their Next Generation Portable.

Andrew House, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has told MCV that all retail games released for the NGP will be available day-and-date on the PlayStation Store:

House: One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP. Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally.

House went on to say that not all digital games would receive a retail release, as digital-only games allow for more “risky experiments”:

House: Not necessarily all games have to be made available physically. And having the option of a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking, and that’s because you don’t-have that in-built risk of physical inventory.

Well done Sony, well done.

Epic Games talk NGP and Unreal Engine 3, may lead to launch titles

It’s always tough for a new platform getting studios to adapt to the new hardware with software that takes advantage of its true potential. Luckily for Sony, Epic Games and their Unreal Engine 3, arguably the most prolific engine this generation, are ready to go. Studios may now license Epic’s engine for NGP development, and founder Tim Sweeney said, “we see NGP as a true game-changer with a perfect combination of performance, innovative controls and gamer appeal that make it truly a high-end console in your pocket.”

Epic Games was one of the studios on stage at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 when NGP was revealed, showcasing the things UE3 can do on the handheld. “We were very proud to be onstage with SCE to give the world just a taste of what Unreal Engine 3 can do on NGP. NGP raises the bar for the performance of handheld platforms with its multi-core GPU and shader-based, multi-core CPU. This makes Unreal Engine 3 a particularly advantageous fit for NGP,” said Vice President Mark Rein. Teasing the launch lineup a bit, Rein further confirmed “multiple UE3 licensees are already working with NGP, some of which have indicated they intend to release their games for the platform’s launch.”

While the engine’s momentum may have slowed since the beginning of this generation, some of the most celebrated titles still use it, like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, and Borderlands. Seeing some of those titles appear on Sony’s handheld would be amazing, but a port of Epic’s own Unreal Tournament III, an early PS3 title, would mesh well with the NGP’s cross-platform interactivity theme, (it had PS3/PC cross-platform co-op and multiplayer) and certainly bring me closer to a day one purchase.

Watch the complete NGP reveal press conference

Did you miss your chance to attend the PlayStation Meeting 2011 last week? What’s that? It took place in Tokyo and the guest list was very limited so we all missed it? Right… I knew that.

Thankfully, Sony has uploaded a video of the entire thing onto YouTube in six parts. So while the details of the event have been reported on ad nauseum since Thursday, we can all finally watch it for ourselves.

Who’s developing games for the NGP?

Who’s developing games for the NGP? Apparently a lot of companies are.

Game Informer has transcribed the list of over 80 companies that plan to develop or publish games for Sony’s Next Generation Portable.

Nearly all of the industry’s big names are represented in the list, however Electronic Arts and THQ are both currently missing in action. I’d imagine these omissions will be rectified by E3.

Check out the complete list of NGP publishers and developers after the break. (more…)
