Gravity Rush accelerates into stores on June 12

Ever wish you could walk on walls, fly through the air, and basically control gravity while saving the planet from some monsters? Well your wish has been granted via the Playstation Vita with Gravity Rush, out June 12. Newton would scoff at how easily you’ll be able to bend his laws of physics but appreciate the liberal use of apples in the trailer.

Gravity storms have been tearing apart the world and it is up to a strange girl named Kat, with the inexplicable power to manipulate gravity, to save the population from the requisite hoard of monsters. The distinct, cell-shaded art style looks beautiful and the open world level design is sure to keep you engrossed in the action. Using all the features the Vita has to offer, you can hurl Kat in any direction with a flick of your finger or a tap on either of the screens. Just hold on tight, you don’t want to accidentally flick your shiny new console out the window where it’ll achieve terminal velocity.

You can pick up Gravity Rush this summer on the PSN or as a game card in brick and mortar retailers.

Sony’s Game Design Chief, Shuhei Yoshida, talks UMD Passport, Vita security

Shuhei Yoshida, Game Design Chief at Sony, doesn’t seem to be afraid of Nintendo or the competition from the 3DS in this interview with Wired during the Dice Summit. Yoshida had a lot to say about the Vita, which launched today in the US.

We already knew UMD Passport wasn’t coming to the US, but Yoshia explains why: because the demand for UMD games, and games for the portable systems in general, is much higher in Japan, where the prices are also much higher.

“Lots of people who are interested in trying Vita are also interested in playing PSP games that they might purchase before Vita comes out, and will not necessarily choose the digital version,” Yoshida said. “When the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system.”

And their fear of piracy running as rampant on the Vita as it did on the PSP? “There will always be the effort by those hackers. They are so smart, they’re sharp. But when you compare what happened with PSP to PS3, there are some hacking activities on PS3 but we’ve been doing much better. Our teams in Japan learned a lot and are applying that knowledge to fortifying PS Vita. So hopefully we will have much stronger protection on PS Vita.”

He also talked about the PlayStation Suite, which Sony is “definitely” looking to add sometime this year, to both the Vita and to Android devices.

Sony enlists Call of Duty Vita this Fall

One of the first games Sony announced for the Vita was Call of Duty, and it looks like we’ll see it sooner rather than later. Guy Longworth, Sony’s Senior Vice President of PlayStation Brand Marketing, recently had a chat with Geoff Keighley of Game Trailers. During a discussion of the Vita’s upcoming games (at the 4:00 mark in the video above), Longworth revealed that Call of Duty Vita will be released this Fall:

“In the Autumn, [my kids] are really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and that’s going to be an absolute game changer for the platform.”

Sadly, Longworth wouldn’t get specific about which Call of Duty game will appear on the handheld. So it could be something we’ve seen before like Modern Warfare 3 or it could be an original CoD game built from the ground up for the Vita. Or, it could be a handheld port of this Fall’s Call of Duty 9 (which is expected to be Call of Duty: Black Ops 2).

So that’s what we know. A Call of Duty game will appear on the Vita this Fall alongside an appearance on nearly every other active platform. When you stop to think about it, that’s not exactly news.

Mortal Kombat on Vita WON’T have an AR mode; new trailer still awesome

This trailer is a tease! Mortal Kombat for the PlayStation Vita will be available this Spring, but it won’t include the awesome Augmented Reality mode shown in this trailer. The scenes of Sub-Zero and Scorpion fighting on the street and in an office building and in a library are just supposed to invoke the feeling of playing Mortal Kombat anywhere.

That’s nice, I guess. And the trailer is pretty great looking. But dude, an AR mode for Mortal Kombat would have been ten kinds of awesome!

Resistance: Burning Skies invades PS Vita on May 29

With the PlayStation Vita now available in stores, Sony is hard at work on a second wave of titles that’ll hit the handheld later this year. And the first of those games, Resistance: Burning Skies, now has a release date: May 29, 2012.

Unlike the PSP’s Resistance: Retribution, which was a third-person shooter, Burning Skies will retain the first person perspective of its PS3 brethren. According to Sony, it will be the first portable game ever controlled using a dual-analog stick setup and a “console-quality shooter.”

And if that’s not enough, you might want to know that it also stars a fireman:

Resistance: Burning Skies pulls you into an entirely new dimension of the Resistance universe. Set in a tale of survival during the August 1951 Chimeran invasion of the East Coast, you take control of Tom Riley, an everyday firefighter from New Jersey who is thrown headfirst into the teeth of the Chimeran war machine, forcing him to redefine his notions of duty and heroism.
