Spongebob Squigglepants ‘draws’ a new crowd

I apologize for that headline pun, but really, what do you expect when talking about Spongebob Squarepants? THQ has recently announced an April 2011 release date for Spongebob Squigglepants, a Wii title that will use THQ’s uDraw peripheral. At first glance, the game gives off a Wario Ware vibe, an accurate depiction of what the game promises to bring to the tablet. Erm, table. Ahem.

Players can expect to plow through a series of “nanogames” by utilizing the uDraw’s drawing capabilities. The nanogames begin to increase in speed and skill as time passes, requiring players to complete more difficult actions in the allotted times given. According to THQ, Spongebob will be shown through several never-before-seen art styles, including “Comic Book Bob” and “Pixel Bob.”

Really, it is like Wario Ware. But if you have kids who aren’t old enough to appreciate the deep psychological truth contained in Wario Ware’s odd array of puzzles, pick up a uDraw and check out Spongebob Squigglepants.

Super Mario All-Stars returns to stores on March 13

Nintendo’s Wii re-release of Super Mario All-Stars this past December sold out almost as fast as stores could stock it. And gamers looking to play Mario’s original adventures with a 16-bit makeover were left hanging as no new copies were in sight

But it looks like Nintendo plans to reissue the compilation next month with a limited “final” print run beginning on March 13. So if you want to own Super Mario All-Stars for your Wii, you better plans to skip work/school on March 13 now.

In addition to a game disc containing Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3, the All-Stars package include a 32-page Super Mario History book featuring “interviews, behind-the-scenes details and rare concept art” as well as a soundtrack CD featuring music from the entire series.

Pucca’s Kisses Game plants a wet one on the Wii Shop

This week’s Nintendo Download is getting into the spirit of Valentine’s Day thanks to the new WiiWare release Pucca’s Kisses Game.

Pucca’s Kisses Game is an “interactive cartoon” that tells the tale of a young woman in love with a ninja and the lengths she’ll go to to cover that ninja in kisses. It’s like a ninja love story!

While Pucca’s Kisses Game is the only WiiWare release this week, it’s joined by a trio of new games in the DSiWAre Shop. Treasure Hunter X is a platformer set in a treasure-filled cave; Oscar in Toyland 2 is a platformer on a mission for missing toys; and Panda Craze is a platformer starring a panda. If you love platformers, this week’s DSiWare update might be for you.

More information on all four of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

Transformers: Dark of the Moon game details, teaser trailer roll out

I’m sure you’re shocked, absolutely shocked, to discover that Activision is hard at work on a game adaptation of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The trilogy-capping entry in the Transformers film saga will be released this Summer and Transformers: War For Cybertron developer High Moon Studios has been hard at work on the PS3 and Xbox 360 edition for about a year now. The developer used this weekend’s New York Toy Fair to tease out a few details of the game to IGN along with that nifty trailer above.

According to Game Director Sean Miller, Dark of the Moon will feel instantly familar to anyone that played War For Cybertron as the game will feature a similar control and gameplay scheme. It will also feature an online multiplayer mode similar to War For Cybertorn, although Miller wouldn’t confirm or deny any game modes beyond Deathmatch.

Instead of following the movie’s script, the Dark of the Moon game will act as a prequel to the film, taking players through Detroit, Siberia and other locations. There will also be a third transformation option, Stealth Force, that IGN joked didn’t look very stealthy.

The Transformers: Dark of the Moon film will be released in theaters on July 1st and you can expect the PS3/Xbox 360 game to launch in a similar timeframe. A DS/3DS/Wii version is also in the works at Behavior Interactive.

First Madden NFL 12 details emerge

While most of us were pulling our hair out at how atrociously bad the Black Eyed Peas were last night, Ian Cummings, Creative Director of Madden NFL 12 (yes, Madden games have those) took some time out for the fans during half time to blog about some of the game’s new features. One was the input shown above where A, A, B on the 360 controller executes a surprise onside kick. The other major feature is “Tuner Sets” – gameplay balances that were previously featured in past NHL and NCAA games that allows the developers to tweak the gameplay without the cumbersome process of getting Sony and Microsoft to approve a patch. This will probably save all of us a lot of time and go a long way in keeping online play fun and free from exploits.

More Madden NFL 12 information can be found at the Madden NFL developer’s blog.

With the exception of the NBA Elite debacle last year, EA Sports has really been impressing game critics with their last few rounds of iterations. Expect Madden NFL 12 to do the same when it releases later this year.
