The Last of Us wins five Best of E3 2012 awards

It’s hard to argue with those who believe The Last of Us reigned supreme at this year’s E3 Expo. That claim has been given some further validation by the Game Critics Awards, which handed five “Best of E3 2012” statues to Naughty Dog for The Last of Us.

The game, which stars two survivors of a post-apocalyptic America, won “Best of Show,” “Best Original Game,” “Best Console Game,” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.” It also took home a “Special Commendation for Sound.”

No other game came close, though Dance Central 3, Halo 4, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown all won two awards and Watch Dogs collected two Commendations.

The Wii U was mostly shut out of the awards show, though the system itself won “Best Hardware” and the multiplatform Injustice: Gods Among Us won for “Best Fighting Game.”

A complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)

Game Critics Awards announce nominees for Best of E3 2012

The world’s biggest gaming websites, including Kotaku, IGN, Nintendo Power, Joystiq and The Escapist (don’t worry, Warp Zoned will be there one day!) have released their full list of nominees for awards pertaining to what was shown and played at this year’s E3 Expo. Some of the highlights of the show, such as Star Wars: 1313 or Ubisoft’s surprise Watch Dogs do not qualify, as the rules state the journalists must be able to “manipulate a game in real-time while running on its native platform.” However, it seems there was not much love for Nintendo’s Wii U, with no mention of the system’s most-anticipated game, ZombiU. Although both Wii Fit U and Game & Wario made it into the “Best Motion Simulation” category.

The awards will be handed out at GameCriticsAwards.com on June 26. The full list of nominees is available after the break. (more…)

First details, gameplay footage of Star Wars 1313

Even after its E3 2012 “reveal,” LucasArts is still keeping a pretty tight lid on Star Wars 1313. At this point, we don’t even know what platforms it’s in development for or if it’s even the “future generation” game the publisher announced a few weeks back.

What we do know is that Star Wars 1313 takes place deep within the bowels of Crouscant, on a level reserved for the scum and villainy of the capital planet. The game, which is set between the trilogies, will star an unnamed bounty hunter as he explores a “criminal conspiracy” on the titular level.

According to an IGN preview, this will involve a lot of Gears of War-like cover fire and some Uncharted-like platforming mechanics that make regular use of the bounty hunter’s arsenal of gadgets.

Hit the jump for more video gameplay footage of Star Wars 1313’s shooting and platforming. And remember, you’ll have to do all of it (there is no try) without the aid of The Force. (more…)

Star Wars 1313 will explore the seedy underbelly of Coruscant

Starkiller was a brutally efficient assassin in his quest to serve Darth Vader as an apprentice, but LucasArts’ next Star Wars project might go further into “mature themes” than the Sith Lord-in-training ever did. Star Wars 1313 is set to make its full debut during next week’s E3 Expo, but we do know it’ll star a bounter hunter and delve into Coruscant’s criminal underground:

Named for Level 1313, a ruthless criminal underground deep below the surface of the planet of Coruscant, the game puts players in control of a deadly bounty hunter as he uses an arsenal of exotic weaponry to hunt down his marks and uncover the truth surrounding a criminal conspiracy. Star Wars 1313 emphasizes epic set pieces and fast-paced combat with a hero who uses human skills and gadgets, rather than supernatural Force powers, to make his way through this dangerous world.

I wonder if the “Death Stick Dealer” from Episode II will make an appearance.

GameTrailers TV to reveal new Star Wars game franchise ahead of E3

When I was a kid, Christmas afternoon was reserved for a back-to-back-to-back viewing of the Star Wars trilogy. This year, Spike TV wants the world to feel like it’s Christmas in May with a Star Wars trilogy marathon on Sunday.

But that’s all just a lead-up to the world premiere of “the newest game franchise in the Star Wars universe.” The first details about the game’s concept and its title will be revealed on the Thursday, May 31 edition of GameTrailers TV. This will be followed by the first gameplay trailer on Spike TV’s “E3 All Access Live” on Monday, June 4.

“I am blown away by both the caliber of the team on this project and their bold vision for this new Star Wars title,” said Geoff Keighley, Host and Executive Producer, Spike TV’s “E3 All Access Live” special. “I can’t wait to introduce our viewers to this game and show off the footage that left my jaw on the floor when I first saw it.”

If this game truly represents a “new franchise” then that means we’re not getting Battlefront III, Force Unleashed III, or even Lego Star Wars IV. I guess the “new” part is exciting, but I really want to play a third game in the Force Unleashed series.
