Blizzard: Diablo III is now a Spring release
After missing a late 2011 launch, Blizzard announced that Diablo III would be released in early 2012. It looks like that release date is also no more as Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime revealed that the game’s new launch window is Spring 2012. The devil must have made them do it!
The news emerged from Activision’s most recent quarterly conference call and is likely due to the extensive changes Blizzard wanted to make to the game after receiving feedback from the Diablo III beta. Here’s what Morhaime had to say about the delay:
Given the popularity of the Action/RPG genre and the keen interest in Diablo III, we expect this launch to be a big opportunity for Blizzard. We can also confirm that we are targeting a Q2 launch for Diablo III. We expect to announce more details about the release schedule in the coming weeks.
So it’s coming in the Spring now. And this time they really really mean it! I guess we’ll see.

Skyrim practically sweeps the 2012 IAAs with five awards

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences handed out the Interactive Achievement Awards for the 15th consecutive year on February 9 and, not surprisingly, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came away the big winner.
The RPG practically swept all of the major awards including Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, and Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering. It also took home RPG of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Story.
Among the other winners, Portal 2 lead the way with three awards including Outstanding Achievement in Connectivity, Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, and an Outstanding Character Performance for Wheatley. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception also took home three awards, all for Naughty Dog’s continued mastery of game graphics.
You can find the full list of winners after the break, while all the nominated games are listed here. (more…)

Weekly Warp-Up: Snow Day Edition
No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…
Snow has finally blanketed the northeast! While I have to admit, I preferred the snowless Winter we were having, it is a bit comforting to look out my window and see a whole mess of the white stuff. And watching my dog turn into a giant, flying snowball when she runs around the yard is more fun than any video game.
Oh right, video games. The industry is in a sort of holding pattern this week as the Vita’s “First Edition” release date approaches. Gaming on the go might be a bit of a problem this week with all the snow, but I’m sure we’ll manage.
However, that’s not to say nothing happened this week. Hit the jump to read all about this week’s big stories thanks to the latest Weekly Warp-Up. (more…)

Love is in the air in this new Lollipop Chainsaw trailer
Little ditty about Nick and Juliet… two American kids cuttin’ heads off zombies…
OK, it doesn’t scan quite like “Jack and Diane.” But the love story at the center of Lollipop Chainsaw is truly one for the ages. Boy loves girl. Boy gets bitten by zombie. Girl cuts off boy’s head and reanimates it. John Mellencamp couldn’t have said it better!
Thankfully, we have Suda 51 to step in for the former Johnny Cougar. So be sure to check out the special Valentine’s Day trailer of Lollipop Chainsaw above. It’ll be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year.

With no new releases, Modern Warfare 3 leads the January 2012 NPD report
With their January 31 release date, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Soul Calibur V missed the cutoff date for the monthly NPD report, so Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 emerges victorious once again.
Infinity Ward’s latest shooter was followed by string of titles that have been racking up big sales all Winter including Just Dance 3 (#2), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (#3), NBA 2K12 (#4), and Battlefield 3 (#5). And a #8 finish for Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure capped off a strong 2011 for the toy/video game hybrid, including 22% of all accessory sales.
With no major new releases last month, game and hardware sales for January 2012 dropped 38% from the year before when Dead Space 2, which explains the large number of holdovers from 2011.
You can find the complete top ten for January 2012 after the break. (more…)

Naughty Dog confirms The Last of Us will include zombies, ruin porn
Game Informer continued their month-long blowout for The Last of Us by sitting down for a short chat with Director Bruce Straley and Creative Director Neil Druckmann. During their discussion, the pair revealed a few major details from the game’s plot as well as talked a bit about the ruined world of The Last of Us.
According to Straley and Druckmann, the game takes place twenty years in the future, after a fungal infection has decimated the world. The only remaining forms of civilization are military quarantine zones to protect the remaining population from “the infected.” While they didn’t use the dreaded zed word, this is the first time a developer at Naughty Dog has referred to the antagonists as something not quite human.
Joel, the main character is a smuggler-type who can get you anything you need. He is given new cargo to smuggle in the form of Ellie, the teenage sidekick seen in the game’s debut trailer. He agrees to sneak her out of the quarantine zone, but something goes wrong and he becomes stuck outside and on the run from the military.
The quarantine zones are built with cement and barbed wire, but Naughty Dog did extensive research to create the outside world, with the two specifically citing the book The World Without Us. The team studied how nature would reclaim structures (“ruin porn” was the phrase used), as well as how flooding would affect the street level (hint: you’ll see a lot of water in The Last of Us).
Finally, they touched briefly on the possibility of a sequel. Right now, the plan for The Last of Us is to tell a self-contained story. But if it does well, Naughty Dog would consider a sequel. Straley and Druckmann confirmed that this is how the team looks at all of their titles, including every game in the Uncharted series.
