Vita launching in Japan on December 17 with 26 launch titles

Sony’s Tokyo Game Show press conference just concluded and we now know a lot more about the Vita than we did before.

The handheld will launch in Japan on December 17. A North American release date wasn’t specified, but we already know the Vita won’t make it across the Pacific before 2012. But back to Japan, 26 titles will be availabile for the system’s launch along with an undetermined number of Vita-compatible PSP games downloadable from the PlayStation Store. Launch titles include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, F1 2011, Ridge Racer, BlazBlue Extend and a lot more.

Sony also revealed that more than 100 titles will be released for the Vita by March 2012. Hmm, maybe they did reveal a US launch date after all…

Kingdom Hearts 3D, RE Revelations, Metal Gear Solid will support the 3DS Slide Pad

While it didn’t get a mention during their 3DS Conference, Nintendo has confirmed the 3DS Slide Pad will be released in Japan on December 1. The add-on analog stick will carry a $19 pricetag by itself with a Monster Hunter Tri G bundle rumored to be available as well. An American release date and pricing have yet to be announced.

However, a quick look at the list of games that support the world’s weirdest peripheral makes a Pacific crossing for the 3DS Slide Pad a very definite possibility:

  • Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble
  • Dynasty Warriors Vs
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater
  • Monster Hunter Tri G
  • Resident Evil Revelations

The only question is, will the 3DS Slide Pad be required to play any or all of these games or will it be optional? And if it is required, what kind of “we’re sorry” program is Nintendo going to roll out then?

3DS Release Dates: Super Mario 3D Land on Nov. 13, Mario Kart 7 on Dec. 4

It looks like Nintendo isn’t done with 3DS news as they’ve revealed North American release dates for two of this Fall’s most anticipated games. Super Mario 3D Land will suit up in stores on November 13 while Mario Kart 7 will Super Mushroom blast its way into stores on December 4.

In case the big news has eluded you thus far, Super Mario 3D Land will bring back the beloved Tanooki Suit while Mario Kart 7 will add “a new optional first-person driving mode that is controlled using the gyro sensor” and new playable characters such as Lakitu and Metal Mario.

These two games will be joined by a new 3DS system update in November that’ll unlock the ability to record 3D video and a new StreetPass experience known as StreetPass Mii Plaza.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition will be available as a free download from the DSiWare Shop/3DS eShop from Septemeber 28, 2011 until February 20, 2012. The anniversary re-release will lead right into a packed 2012 that includes Mario Tennis 3DS, Animal Crossing 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 2, Paper Mario and the recently delayed Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Nintendo’s 3DS Conference reveals Monster Hunter 4, Kid Icarus delay, more

Nintendo’s 3DS Conference is over and while it was short on details, it was long on game announcements. All told, more than 20 titles were revealed including the next numbered game in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter 4. Obviously, the Monster Hunter series is a much bigger deal in Japan than it is in the US, but it’s a major “get” for Nintendo all the same.

Nintendo had a few games of their own to announce at the show including an all-new Fire Emblem game, Mario Tennis 3DS and Culdcept 3DS (developed by Omiya Soft), all due next year.

In addition to a slew of new titles for the hardcore gamer, Nintendo revealed a new focus on “female gamers” for the 3DS with the reveal of the Misty Pink system seen to your left. The new color scheme will be available in Japan in October. This push for the female demographic will also include new Friend Collection and Style Savvy games in 2012.

In a bit of bad news, Kid Icarus: Uprising won’t make it out this year. Pit’s return will be released in 2012 instead.

Hit the jump for a complete list of everything Nintendo showed at their 3DS Conference, complete with tentative Japanese release dates. For some of these titles, an American release is a sure thing (or already announced). While for others, we’ll just have to hope for the best. Here we go. (more…)

Quantic Dream “lost” $8-16 million because of used sales

Another developer is pissing and moaning about secondhand sales and this time it’s Quantic Dream, the team behind Heavy Rain. Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the company’s co-founder, recently sat down for an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. During the exchange, he laid out the details of the company’s “lost sales” due to the used game market:

“I think [second hand gaming] is one of the number one problems right now in the industry.

“I can take just one example of Heavy Rain – we basically sold to date approximately two million units, we know from the trophy system that probably more than three million people bought this game and played it. On my small level it’s a million people playing my game without giving me one cent. And my calculation is, as Quantic Dream, I lost between [$8 and $16] million worth of royalties because of second hand gaming.”

Ignoring the fact that de Fondaumiere seems to have completely forgotten the rental market for Heavy Rain, he is falling into the same trap as other developers who rail against used games: if someone buys it used, there’s no guarantee they would have bought it new. He goes on to say that if gamers stop buying games like Heavy Rain new, developers will stop making them:

“Because when developers and publishers alike are going to see that they can’t make a living out of producing games that are sold through retail channels, because of second hand gaming, they will simply stop making these games.”

This is obviously a man who clearly doesn’t get it. If developers aren’t making enough money from retail sales, the answer isn’t to crack down on used sales (as if that were even legal). Instead, they should be looking for ways to get development costs down and make gamers want to buy new.

Nah, that’d make too much sense.

EA officially announces Syndicate reboot

After years of rumors and leaks (including one just this weekend), Electronic Arts has officially announced that Starbreeze (of Chronicles of Riddick fame) is working on a reboot of Syndicate.

Scheduled for an early 2012 release on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, the Syndicate reboot will eschew the real-time strategy nature of the 1993 original, opting instead for a sci-fi shooter feel. However, the new Syndicate will retain the cyberpunk aesthetic and corporate intrigue that featured heavily in the original game. This includes a four-player co-op mode made up of missions from that game and a storyline that should makes fans feel right at home:

Set in 2069, Syndicate takes players into a dark, Machiavellian world run without government oversight with many syndicates vying for total dominance of their local market place. With no one to question their intentions or actions, three mega corporations – Eurocorp, Cayman Global, and Aspari – are at the forefront of this brutal war for control of the pivotal American market.

In the world of Syndicate, everything is digitally connected, including the people. Players aren’t limited to the weapons in their hands. Through DART 6 bio-chip technology implanted in their head, players can slow down time and breach the digital world around them to take down their foes using a variety of upgradable hacking mechanics. Syndicate’s blend of fast-paced, futuristic, action shooter settings and story combined with innovative chip breach gameplay instantly immerses players in a unique digital world.

EA and Starbreeze have released an initial batch of screenshots of the new Syndicate, which you can view after the break. (more…)
