PSP Go price slashed to $150

Sony recently cut the price of the PSP-3000 with a big post on the PlayStation.Blog and a splashy new ad campaign. But did you know the PSP Go quietly received a price drop last week as well?

Apparently, most retailers didn’t get the memo.

According to the official PSP page on PlayStation.com, the PSP Go should now be available for $149.99. So if you really want a Go, keep checking back with your local game retailer; it should get a lot cheaper very soon.

Irish indie rocker loves Sonic the Hedgehog

Irish indie folk rocker Big Monster Love loves video games. So much so that he named his debut album Game Over and uses a pixelated version of himself on the cover (hmm, that’s a pretty neat idea).

He teamed up with the creative agency Bowsie Workshop to create the awesome 8-bit-inspired stop motion music video you see above. Add in a little Sonic the Hedgehog for flavor and a catchy little ditty (called “Free Gaff Forever”) and you’ve got the recipe for a great two minutes on YouTube.

Oh, and in case you don’t speak Irish slang, “free gaff” refers to living rent free with your parents. And “forever” means forever. OK, that one’s the same everywhere.

Bungie’s next game will be an MMO

Move over Blizzard, Bungie’s riding into town and they’re bringing a new MMO with them.

During a panel titled “I Shot You First: Networking the Gameplay of Halo: Reach” at the Game Developers Conference, Bungie’s David Aldridge revealed that the company’s next game will be a “massively multiplayer action game.”

The game will be part of Bungie’s New Universe and will be published by Activision sometime in the not-so-near future (Activision execs have stated it won’t be released until 2012 at the earliest). When asked for more details on the project, Aldridge said it’s not “WoW in space.”

Hopefully, we’ll find out more about Bungie’s New Universe (and some kind of release schedule) at E3.

Red Dead Redemption, Minecraft clean up at GDC Awards

The Game Developers Conference continues to roll on in San Francisco, and the game industry honored their own last night with the 11th annual Game Developers Choice Awards.

Red Dead Redemption was the most honored game of the night, winning the Game of the Year award as well as Best Game Design, Best Technology and Best Audio. The developers at Rockstar San Diego had to share the spotlight with Mojang’s Minecraft, which won three awards: Best Debut Game, Innovation Award and Best Downloadable Game.

Three other games were winners at last night’s GDC Awards: BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 for Best Writing, ZeptoLab’s Cut the Rope for Best Handheld Game, and Playdead’s Limbo for Best Visual Arts.

Three special awards were also handed out. The man behind the Fable franchise , Peter Molyneux, won the Lifetime Achievement Award. Another big name among RPG producers, Yu Suzuki, won the Pioneer Award. Maybe this’ll give him the clout he needs to create the long-rumored Shenmue III.

Finally, the Ambassador Award was given to Tim Brengle and Ian MacKenzie, two early organizers of the Game Developers Conference.

iPad 2 coming March 11, priced at $499

As expected, the second generation iPad was announced today at a press conference in San Franciso spearheaded by CEO Steve Jobs. Priced at $499 and available March 11, the tablet, which is officially named the iPad 2, improves on the original iPad thanks to its “thinner, lighter, faster” design.

The “faster” claim is bolstered by the iPad 2’s new dual-core A5 chip architecture (which makes it perfect for gaming). According to Apple, this makes the device nine times faster than the previous iPad and, along with its dual camera setup, makes FaceTime video calling possible. The cameras will also be able to record HD video. Even with these advanced specs, the iPad 2 is 33% thinner and and nearly 15% lighter.

In addition to beefing up the iPad’s inards, the new Smart Cover makes the device more mobile than ever. Snapping into place with magnets, the Smart Cover protects and can be folded to use as a stand.

You can also head on over to Apple.com to see a video of the iPad 2 in action.

Hail to Duke Nukem Forever’s Mature rating

Every game that has ever been threatened with an Adults Only rating from the ESRB is an amateur next to Duke Nukem Forever. As expected, the ESRB has awarded the game a Mature rating. And the reasons behind the rating have likely got every member of the “Won’t someone think of the children!” brigade salivating at the chance to denounce it in public.

According to the ESRB, Duke Nukem Forever was given a Mature rating for “Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol.” That mouthful is topped by the game’s Rating Summary, which reads like a laundry list of every complaint Fox News has ever lobbed against video games (and then some).

So who wants some? Hit the break to find out exactly why the ESRB gave Duke Nukem Forever a Mature rating. (more…)

Microsoft goes green, begins recycling Gamertags

Al Gore would be so proud.

Microsoft (via Major Nelson‘s blog) has announced that they have begun the process of reclaiming long abandoned Xbox Live Gamertags. These usernames will then be recycled and offered up to the community for new subscribers and name changes.

The Major (who styles himself a bit of a necromancer in the blog post) said that additional “zombie Gamertags” will be resurrected everyday. So if there’s a Gamertag you’ve always wanted, check the “Change Gamertag” section under the Xbox Channel on your console now.
